Visible injury symptoms such as necrosis, chlorosis and premature senscence in the leaves of Ginkgo bloba and Pinus thunbergii treated with acid rain of pH 3.2 or below were observed. The epicuticular wax erosions were observed by SEM after exposure to acid rain of pH 2.4 and 3.2 in G. biloba and pH 4.0 below in P. thunbergii. The adaxial epidennal cells and sponge parenchyma cells were compressed, and those were distorted in the leaves of G. biloba treated with simulated acid rain of pH 3.2 or below. However, vascular tissue was intact. With increase of acidity, mesophyll cells were smaller than those of control while intercellular space in mesophyU was increased. In P. thunbergii, sponge parenchyma cells and vascular tissue except epidennis were distorted after exposure to acid rain of pH 2.4. The size change of stomata in foliar injury was not observed, but the stomatal index and size of stomatal aperture in leaves treated with acid rain increased. The stomata of injured leaf were opened in both species examined.amined.
With the object of developing a non-gap choke core, effects of annealing in oxygen atmosphere on magnetic properties for Fe$_{78}$Si$_{9}$B$_{13}$ amorphous alloy were investigated. After annealing for 2 hrs at 440 $^{\circ}C$, optimum magnetic properties for choke core were obtained, where the effective permeability was 180 and was almost constant up to several MHz, and the decrease in permeability upon large DC bias current of 12 A or DC bias magnetic field of 8,000 A/m was very little. Moreover the AC magnetic loss was very low as compared to the conventional choke cores. Upon the optimum annealing, the magnetic hysteresis loop was inclined accompanying the increase of coercive force and the appearance of fine crystallites of $\alpha$-Fe phase. The good choke core properties was considered to be due to the suppression of domain boundary motion and domain refinement by the crystallites.
Coupling loss variation as the shape of fiber ends and the fiber arrangement in a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, formed with two optical fibers with dielectric mirror coatings on their ends, is analyzed. For the intended features it is assumed that one of two fibers is processed to have a concave mirror whose curvature is the same as that of the wavefront of the Gaussian beam from the first fiber. In this assumption, it was turned out that the coupling loss at the cavity length of 15 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ is less than 0.5% even with tilt angle of 0.2$^{\circ}$, curvature error of 70 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, cavity length error of 8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, and lateral alignment error of 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Thus, low loss and high-finesse fiber Fabry-Perot filters whose cavity length is greater than several ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ can be obtained easily if the receiving fiber end is properly formed.
In order to manufacture a lightweight medical radiation shielding sheet, a new shielding material was studied. We tried to verify the possibility of a shielding material by mixing egg shell powder, which is thrown away as food waste at home, with a polymer material. Existing lightweight materials satisfy eco-friendly conditions, but there are difficulties in the economics of shielding materials due to the cost of the material refining process. This study aims to solve this problem by using egg shells, which are household waste. A 3 mm-thick shielding sheet was fabricated using HDPE, a polymer material, and particle distribution within the cross-section of the shielding sheet was also verified. The shape of the particles was rough and there were voids between the particles, and the average weight per unit area was 1.5 g/cm2. The shielding performance was around 20% in the low energy area and 10% in the high energy area, showing the possibility of a low-dose medical radiation shielding body.
This study was conducted to develop a reservoir modelling workflow to reproduce the heterogeneous distribution of effective permeability that impacts on the performance of SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage), the in-situ bitumen recovery technique in the Athabasca Oil Sands. Lithologic facies distribution is the main cause of the heterogeneity in bitumen reservoirs in the study area. The target formation consists of sand with mudstone facies in a fluvial-to-estuary channel system, where the mudstone interrupts fluid flow and reduces effective permeability. In this study, the lithologic facies is classified into three classes having different characteristics of effective permeability, depending on the shapes of mudstones. The reservoir modelling workflow of this study consists of two main modules; facies modelling and permeability modelling. The facies modelling provides an identification of the three lithologic facies, using a stochastic approach, which mainly control the effective permeability. The permeability modelling populates mudstone volume fraction first, then transforms it into effective permeability. A series of flow simulations applied to mini-models of the lithologic facies obtains the transformation functions of the mudstone volume fraction into the effective permeability. Seismic data contribute to the facies modelling via providing prior probability of facies, which is incorporated in the facies models by geostatistical techniques. In particular, this study employs a probabilistic neural network utilising multiple seismic attributes in facies prediction that improves the prior probability of facies. The result of using the improved prior probability in facies modelling is compared to the conventional method using a single seismic attribute to demonstrate the improvement in the facies discrimination. Using P-wave velocity in combination with density in the multiple seismic attributes is the essence of the improved facies discrimination. This paper also discusses sand matrix porosity that makes P-wave velocity differ between the different facies in the study area, where the sand matrix porosity is uniquely evaluated using log-derived porosity, P-wave velocity and photographically-predicted mudstone volume.
The highly porous cellulosic aerogels were prepared by freeze-drying method using sodium hydroxide-urea aqueous solution in the process of dissolution, gelation, regeneration and organic solvent substitution. The structural characteristics of porous aerogel were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption apparatus. As a result, the dissolving pulp was completely dissolved, but filter papers and holocellulose were divided into two layers (dissolved and undissolved parts) in the process of centrifugation. The structure of aerogel from dissolved pulp showed porous pores in the surface and net-shaped network in the inner part. Aerogels from filter paper and holocellulose had the condensed porous network surface and the open-pore nano-fibril network inner structure. Undissolved form of fibers was observed in the aqueous solution of aerogel from holocellulose. The BET value ($S_{BET}$) of aerogel from dissolved pulp was ranged in 260~326 $m^2/g$, and it was decreased with the increase of concentration. Whereas, the $S_{BET}$ value of aerogel from filter paper (198~418 $m^2/g$) was increased with the increase of concentration. The $S_{BET}$ value of aerogel from holocellulose were 137 $m^2/g$ at 2% (w/w) of cellulose, and it was increased to maximum 401 $m^2/g$ at 4% (w/w) of cellulose. Then, it was decreased at 5% (w/w) of cellulose.
We measured the changes in P-wave velocity that occur when injecting $CO_2$ in gaseous, liquid, and supercritical phases into water-saturated anisotropic sandstones. P-wave velocities were measured in two cylindrical samples of Tako Sandstone, drilled along directions normal and parallel to the bedding plane, using a piezo-electric transducer array system. The velocity changes caused by $CO_2$ injection are typically -6% on average, with maximum values about -16% for the case of supercritical $CO_2$ injection. P-wave velocity tomograms obtained by the differential arrival-time method clearly show that $CO_2$ migration behaviour is more complex when $CO_2$ flows normal to the bedding plane than when it flows parallel to bedding. We also found that the differences in P-wave velocity images were associated both with the $CO_2$ phases and with heterogeneity of pore distribution in the rocks. Seismic images showed that the highest velocity reduction occurred for supercritical $CO_2$ injection, compared with gaseous or liquid $CO_$ injection. This result may justify the use of the seismic method for $CO_2$ monitoring in geological sequestration.
