A Study on Marketing Strategies of Public Libraries - Focused on New York Public Libraries - (공공도서관 마케팅 전략 - 뉴욕 공공도서관 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study aims to provide marketing strategies for the public libraries in Korea. For this purpose, this study focused on four public libraries in New York, USA, which have been providing the most excellent library services on the world. And this study examined what efforts these libraries have been making for the development of community and information needs of customers. The data for this study were collected by literature review, participant observation at the public libraries in New York, and gathering law materials. And in-depth interviews with the librarians and related professionals in New York and Korea were also proceeded. As a result, this study suggested marketing strategies for the management of public libraries in Korea.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the implications that GIS(Geographic Information Systems) can have in public library collection selection and service development from a marketing perspective. GIS is a computer system capable of assembling, storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information. Through the understanding and utilization of GIS, we can collect geographical, transportation, political, legal, demographic, economic, social, cultural, educational, and recreational information of the community. Public libraries can utilize GIS for market research, including customer analysis to select library collection and develop library service based on library users' needs. As a result, public libraries can find a way to make a lasting relationship with users which is the final goal of marketing activities.

A Study on Children Service Marketing Strategies of Public Libraries: With Special Reference to 'Family Place Library' at the Public Libraries in USA (공공도서관 어린이서비스 마케팅 전략 - 미국 공공도서관의 '가족장소도서관'을 중심으로 -)

  • Public libraries face various changes and challenges in the knowledge society of the 21st century. The necessity of introducing 'marketing' concept into the management of public libraries is increasing. This study focuses on 'Family Place Library' program among the children services of public libraries in the United States. 'Family Place Library' is the library program for the youngest children and families, which has been spread over 300 public libraries of USA until February, 2011. The researcher did participation observation and in-depth interview at the libraries which are the main cases for 'Family Place Libraries' in New York, USA. And the researcher analysed the content of the program and did in-depth interviews with related professionals in and out of libraries over many states of USA. Based on the results of this study, the researcher suggested marketing strategies for the management of public libraries.

The Effects of Internal Marketing of Public Libraries on the Quality of Working Life of Librarian (공공도서관의 내부마케팅이 사서의 직장생활의 질에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • This research empirically analyzes the effect of internal marketing in public libraries on the quality of work life of public library librarians. To this end, a 59-day survey of incumbent librarians working at public libraries in Seoul was conducted on Naver Form from July 25, 2020, and 120 respondents were conducted using IBM SPSS 25, a statistical program, to conduct factor analysis, reliability analysis, frequency analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Research has shown that internal marketing of public libraries has a positive effect on the quality of librarians' work life. As a way to improve internal marketing in public libraries, it was suggested to prepare a systematic and sustainable internal marketing system, recognize experiences and compensate highly educated librarians, improve the compensation system of librarians, and promote an internal marketing system centered on supporting management and delegation.

  • This study aims to analyze the effect of marketing using Chinese public library WeChat official accounts on the perception of the library and loyalty. For this purpose, research possibilities were explored, and a questionnaire was developed through in-depth interviews with users who subscribed to the Chinese public library WeChat official accounts and those who did not. A survey was conducted with the questionnaire for public library users in six regions of China. As a result, it was confirmed that the characteristics of the official account operation had a positive effect on the perception of the libraries and users' loyalty. This study is meaningful in that it verified how Chinese public library marketing using SNS affected users' purpose on the use of libraries, perception of libraries, and users' loyalty, and suggested how to deal with WeChat official accounts among SNS types.

  • As non-profit organizations, public libraries have been demanded to meet the modem epoched trend, better social usefulness, and new shape-up. This study, presents the public library's new scope of service with emphasis on the dynamic information service to maximize interests of local community. in ever-changing situation of competition and globalization. This study presents a new goal to help overcome the negative phenomena arising in the advanced countries by introducing marketing concepts in the operation of public libraries.

  • Seoul City has been operating 17 public libraries to bridge the digital gap in the information society. Digital collection that has used recently, is providing various information services and information sources such as Internet. DVDs, satellite broadcasts and plan to offer service with more contents in the near future. In an attempt to facilitate the use of digital archives in public libraries in Seoul, this study thus applies marketing strategy to Electronic Information Center in the S Library and techniques can contribute a dynamic approach to total strategy development for library professionals that will ensure effective management and the achievement for their goals.

  • The changes of university entrance system which is affecting public library management and services, and current situation of private education market were analyzed for this study. It was revealed that we have several competitive forces that determine library service justification in Korean service environment(market) which has not experienced in the developed countries. The elements of private education may drive competition in the book reading service industry. Such elements effectuate serious problems and discourage library service marketing to the user. For a sustainable competitive advantage, English language collection and reading program model was developed for library marketing strategies(as applying leverage).

The Effects of Motivation and Continuing Factors on the Satisfaction of Volunteer Activities and Marketing Intention for Volunteers in Public Libraries (공공도서관 자원봉사자의 참여동기와 지속요인이 자원봉사활동 만족도와 마케팅 의도에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • Volunteers in public libraries are recognized only as internal manpower, so their sustainability and effectiveness are limited because the motivation for volunteering is hardly considered. This study aims to explore the motivation for volunteering in public libraries and the factors to continuation of the volunteering, and to analyze how these factors affect volunteer satisfaction and marketing intentions. To this end, the variables in this studies including satisfaction and motivation was defined operationally based on the related research and a pilot study with several in-depth interviews. A questionnaire survey was executed with the defined variables and the survey data were analyzed statistically. The results showed that the factors of emotional and psychological motivation influenced the satisfaction and marketing intention rather than the managerial factors such as remuneration. The results indicate the need for a change in volunteer management to a relationship-oriented management method. This study is meaningful in that it expands the value of volunteers in public libraries from as managerial to as marketing resources for public libraries.

The Design of a Place Branding Model for Public Libraries and Its Application to Creating a Public Library Brand Image (공공도서관을 위한 장소브랜딩모형의 설계와 브랜드이미지의 창조)

  • In this study, a place branding model for public library was designed to revitalize public libraries' user visits by modifying and extending the Cai(2002)'s Place Branding Model. By applying this model, an example of creating a brand image of a public library was presented, and it was verified that this example is suitable as a brand image. To this end, literature research on the place branding models and brand marketing was conducted, and the types and contents of marketing suitable for the place branding model of public library were founded. And to verify that the example of the public library's brand image created by applying this model is suitable as a brand image, A survey of user perception was conducted on the brand image and brand identity of the applied library for this model, and the results of the survey were used to analyze the correlation and simple regression between these two variables. In this way, this study is meaningful in increasing the realization and real potential of place branding for promoting public libraries' user visits through the design and application of a conceptual model that embodies the place branding of public library.
