There exist many frame structural systems which may be regarded as a combined structural system composed of beam/bar elements and attachments reducible to damped spring-mass systems. In this paper, analytical methods based on the receptance for the vibration analysis of such a system are presented. For the free vibration analysis and response calculations to point excitations, receptances of a uniform Timoshenko beam and a bar are derived in closed and spectral forms, and the method to obtain the system receptance by synthesizing the receptances of the elements and other subsystems is presented. The system damping property is also obtainable by sysnthesizing the components' damping properties. For calculations of the system responses to support motion, the Support Displacement Transfer Ratio(SDTR) of a uniform Timoshenko beam and a bar conceptually similar to the receptance is defined, and the method of synthesizing them with other subsystems' receptances is also presented. Such a method is very convenient especially in dynamic reanalysis subject to changes of some design variables.

Normal strategy of structure optimization procedure has been minimum cost or weight design. Minimum weight design satisfying an allowable stress has been used for the ship and offshore structure, but minimum cost design could be used for the case of high human cost. Natural frequency analysis and forced vibration one have been used for the strength estimation of marine structures. For the case of high precision experiment facilities in marine field, the structure has normally enough margin in allowable stress aspect and sometimes needs high natural frequency of structure to obtain very high precise experiment results. It is not easy to obtain a structure design with high natural frequency, since the natural frequency depend on the stiffness to mass ratio of the structure and increase of structural stiffness ordinary accompanies the increase of mass. It is further difficult at the grillage structure design using the profiles, because the properties of profiles are not continuous but discrete, and resource of profiles are limited at the design of grillage structure. In this paper, the grillage structure design system under the constraint of high natural frequency is introduced. The design system adopted genetic algorithm to realize optimization procedure and can be used at the design of the experimental facilities of marine field such as a towing carriage, PMM, test frame, measuring frame and rotating arm.

This paper details the analytical and experimental studies performed to propose a steel damper based on the flexural yielding mechanism. The damper is composed of a set of damping plates that are designed to yield in flexure. The comparison of experimental and finite element analysis results indicate that the analytical approach adopted in this study should be appropriate to perform sensitivity studies on the geometries of the damping plates. Although the damper is originally proposed to work based on the flexural mechanism, it is observed that the contribution of the tensile behavior of the damping plate could be considerable. As the thickness of the damping plate increases, the plastic energy due to the flexural yield increases. As the thickness of the damping plate decreases, the contribution of the tensile behavior increases, and the shape of the hysteresis loop distorts.

Modular apartment houses are a relatively new approach to public housing in South Korea. While promising in terms of efficiency and potential cost benefits, initial occupancy and maintenance data highlight areas for improvement in quality control. Analysis of defects reported during occupancy and maintenance stages revealed a high prevalence of issues with wallpaper and flooring. This suggests a need for stricter quality control measures during the production and installation of these building components. Furthermore, maintenance data identified shortcomings in the waterproofing methods employed for roofs, as well as in the design and construction management of connections between the low-rise concrete frames and the modular units themselves, including balconies. These findings point towards the importance of meticulous design and rigorous construction management practices to ensure the long-term durability of these critical building elements. Finally, the research suggests that unifying responsibility for construction management by awarding contracts for both the frame and the modular units to a single company could improve overall quality control. This approach could potentially mitigate issues arising from divided responsibility and streamline communication channels. By addressing these quality control concerns, modular construction has the potential to become a more widely adopted and successful method for delivering public housing in South Korea.

Steel elevator pit was developed for the purpose of minimizing the excavation, simplifying the construction of the frame and economical efficiency by improving the problems that occurred in the existing reinforced concrete. It is common to apply conventional RC method through excavation to underground structures such as underground floor collector well and elevator pit. In recent years, the use of steel collector well and steel elevator pits to reduce construction costs by minimizing the materials of steel and concrete has been continuously increasing. The steel elevator pit is an underground structure and then the performance of the welding part and the structure system is important. Specimen with only steel plate and concrete without studs could support the load more than 3 times than the specimen with deck only. Therefore, even if there is no stud, the deck (steel plate) rib is formed and the effect of restraining the steel plate and the concrete during the bending action can be expected. However, since sudden fracture in the elevator pit may occur, stud bolt arrangement is necessary for the composite effect of steel plate and concrete. It is expected that the bending strength can be expected to increase by about 15% or more depending with and without stud bolts.

This study was performed to evaluate the effect of Response modification factors (R-factor) in 3-, 9- and 20- story steel Moment Resisting Frame (MRF) buildings. Each structure was designed using a R-factor of 8, as tabulated in the 2000 International Building Code provision (IBC 2000) and Korea Building Code (KBC) 2008. In order to evaluate the maximum and minimum performance expected for such structures, an upper bound and lower bound design were adopted for each model. Next, each analytical model was designed using different R-factors (8, 9, 10, 11, 12) and four different structural periods with the original fundamental period. For a detailed case study, a total of 150 analytical models were subjected to 20 ground motions representing a hazard level with a 2% probability of being exceeded in 50 years. In order to evaluate the performance of the structures, static push-over and non-linear time history analysis (NTHA) were performed, and displacement ductility demand was investigated to consider the ductility capacity of the structures. The results show that the dynamic behaviors for the 3- and 9-story buildings are relatively stable and conservative, while the 20-story buildings show a large displacement ductility demand due to dynamic instability factors. (e.g. P-delta effect and high mode effect)
Current seismic design code is based on the assumption that the designed structures would be behaved inelastically during a severe earthquake ground motion. For this reason, seismic design forces calculated by seismic codes are much lower than the forces generated by design earthquakes which makes structures responding elastically. Present procedures for calculating seismic design forces are based on the use of elastic spectra reduced by a strength reduction factors known as "response modificaion factor". Because these factors were determined empirically, it is difficult to know how much inelastic behaviors of the structures exhibit. In this study, lateral strength required to maintain target ductility ratio was first calculated from nonlinear dynamic analysis of the single degree of freedom system. At the following step, base shear foeces specified in seismic design code compare with above results. If the base shear force required to maintain target ductility ratio was higher than the code specified one, the lack of required strength should be filled by overstrength and/or redundancy. Therefore, overstrength of moment resisting frame structure will be estimated from the results of push-over analysis.

In seismic design standards such as KDS 41 17 00 and ASCE 7, three procedures are provided to estimate seismic demands: equivalent lateral force (ELF), response spectrum analysis (RSA), and response history analysis (RHA). In this study, two steel special moment frames (SMFs) were designed with ELF and RSA, which have been commonly used in engineering practice. The collapse probabilities of the SMFs were evaluated according to FEMA P695 methodology. It was observed that collapse probabilities varied significantly in accordance with analysis procedures. SMFs designed with RSA (RSA-SMFs) had a higher probability of collapse than SMFs designed with ELF (ELF-SMFs). Furthermore, RSA-SMFs did not satisfy the target collapse probability specified in ASCE 7-16 whereas ELF-SMFs met the target probability.

Optimality Criteria algorithm based on the derivation of reciprocal approximations has been applied to structural optimization of large-scale structures. However, required computational cost for the serial analysis algorithm of large-scale structures consisting of a large number of degrees of freedom and members is too high to be adopted in the solution process of O.C. algorithm Thus, parallel version of O.C. algorithm on the network of personal computers is presented in this Paper. Parallelism in O.C. algorithm may be classified into two regions such as analysis and optimizer part As the first step of development of parallel algorithm, parallel structural analysis algorithm is developed and used in O.C. algorithm The algorithm is applied to optimal design of a 54-story plane frame structure

In the field of structural optimization simulated annealing (SA) algorithm has widely been adopted as an optimizer with the positive features of SA such as simplicity of the algorithm and possibility of finding global solution However, annealing process of SA algorithm based on random generator with the zeroth order structural information requires a large of number of iterations highly depending on cooling schedules and stopping criteria. In this paper, MSA algorithm is presented in the form of two phase annealing process with the effective cooling schedule and stopping criteria. With the application to optimal seismic design of steel structures, the performance of the proposed MSA algorithm has been demonstrated with respect to stability and global convergence of the algorithm
