  • The surface wave data obtained in a tidal flat located in the sw coast of the Korean Peninsula were used to analyse the shear wave velocity structure of the area. First, the phase velocity dispersion curves were obtained by the tau-p stacking method and the group velocity dispersion curves by a wavelet transform method and the Multiple Filtering Technique by Dziewonski. The phase velocity dispersion curves exhibited bigger errors than the group velocity curves. The results showed that the wavelet transform method was more effective in separating the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity curves than the Multiple Filtering Technique. Combined use of the fundamental and the 1st higher mode group velocity dispersion curves in the inversion for the shear wave velocity structure gave better spatial resolution compared when the fundamental mode group velocity was used alone. This study indicates that the group velocity dispersion curves can be used in the inversion of Rayleigh waves for the shear wave velocity structure, especially effectively with the higher mode group velocity curves together.

  • Urban conditions, such as existing underground facilities and ambient noise due to cultural activity, restrict the general application of conventional geophysical techniques. At a tunnelling site in an urban area along an existing railroad, we used the refraction microtremor (REMI) technique (Louie, 2001) as an alternative way to get geotechnical information. The REMI method uses ambient noise recorded by standard refraction equipment and a linear geophone array to derive a shear-wave velocity profile. In the inversion procedure, the Rayleigh wave dispersion curve is picked from a wavefield transformation, and iteratively modelled to get the S-wave velocity structure. The REMI survey was carried out along the line of the planned railway tunnel. At this site vibrations from trains and cars provided strong seismic sources that allowed REMI to be very effective. The objective of the survey was to evaluate the rock mass rating (RMR), using shear-wave velocity information from REMI. First, the relation between uniaxial compressive strength, which is a component of the RMR, and shear-wave velocity from laboratory tests was studied to learn whether shear-wave velocity and RMR are closely related. Then Suspension PS (SPS) logging was performed in selected boreholes along the profile, in order to draw out the quantitative relation between the shear-wave velocity from SPS logging and the RMR determined from inspection of core from the same boreholes. In these tests, shear-wave velocity showed fairly good correlation with RMR. A good relation between shear-wave velocity from REMI and RMR could be obtained, so it is possible to estimate the RMR of the entire profile for use in design of the underground tunnel.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the landslide prediction models quantitatively using prediction rate curve. A case study from the Jangheung area was used to illustrate the methodologies. The landslide locations were detected from remote sensing data and field survey, and geospatial information related to landslide occurrences were built as a spatial database in GIS. As prediction models, joint conditional probability model and certainty factor model were applied. For cross-validation approach, landslide locations were partitioned into two groups randomly. One group was used to construct prediction models, and the other group was used to validate prediction results. From the cross-validation analysis, it is possible to compare two models to each other in this study area. It is expected that these approaches will be used effectively to compare other prediction models and to analyze the causal factors in prediction models.

  • Urban conditions such as underground facilities and ambient noises due to cultural activity restrict the application of conventional geophysical techniques in general. We used the refraction microtremor (REMI) technique as an alternative way to get the geotechnical information, in particular shear-wave (S-wave) velocity information, at a site along an existing rail road. The REMI method uses ambient noises recorded using standard refraction equipment to derived shear-wave velocity information at a site. It does a wavefield transformation on the recorded wavefield to produce Rayleigh wave dispersion curve, which are then picked and modeled to get the shear-wave velocity structure. At this site the vibrations from the running trains provided strong noise sources that allowed REMI to be very effective. REMI was performed along the planned new underground rail tunnel. In addition, Suspension PS logging (SPS) were carried out at selected boreholes along the profile in order to draw out the quantitative relation between the shear wave velocity from the PS logging and the rock mass rating (RMR) determined from the inspection of the cores recovered from the same boreholes, These correlations were then used to relate the shear-wave velocity derived from REMI to RMR along the entire profile. The correlation between shear wave velocity and RMR was very good and so it was possible to estimate the RMR of the total zone of interest for the design of underground tunnel,

  • Surface wave (SW) surveys, which have been applied to numerous application fields ranging from micro-scale ultrasonic analysis to geological scale analysis, are widely used to monitor near-surface stability. The survey method is basically made through analysis on dispersion of SW propagating along the earth surface, in order to delineate shear velocity structure of subsurface. SW survey data are inverted with assuming one-dimensional (1D) layered-earth in order to recover shear wave velocities of each layer, after being analyzed to make the dispersion curve that shows phase velocity of SW with respect to frequency. This study reviews surface wave surveys with explaining the basic theory including the characteristics of dispersion and the procedure of general data processing. Even though surface wave surveys can be categorized into active and passive methods, this paper focuses only on active surface wave methods which includes continuous SW (CSW), spectral analysis of SW (SASW) and multichannel analysis of SW (MASW). Passive method will be reviewed in the subsequent paper.

  • Analytical studies were conducted to develop the Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW) method for underwater use. For the precise estimation of the in-situ soil stiffness profile from SASW measurements, it is essential to determine economical and reasonable theoretical dispersion curves reflecting various experimental conditions. In this paper, therefore, analytical methods are mainly discussed, which were developed to determine theoretical dispersion curves of surface waves propagated along the soil-water interface. Application of the analytical methods is then illustrated by an example involving estimation of a stiffness profile through a forward modeling process of SASW measurements. Applicabilities of the SASW method as well as the developed analytical methods are evaluated, respectively, from the example.

  • To delineate the inhomogeneities including fractures and to estimate the freshness of rock borehole radar consisting of the reflection and tomography methods, and GPR surveys were conducted at a granite quarry mine. The borehole reflection survey using the direction finding antenna was also conducted to get the spatial orientations of reflectors. 20 MHz was adopted as the central frequency for the borehole radar reflection and tomography surveys and 100 MHz was for GPR. Through the interpretation of borehole reflection data using dipole and direction finding antenna as well as GPR images, which are good agreement with each other, we could determine the orientation of the major fractures in three dimensional way. Parts of travel time curves of tomography data showed the anisotropy, which is uncommon in granite quarry. By comparing the tomography data and TeleViewer images, the anisotropy effect in this area are closely related to fine fissures aligned in the same direction. The area confined by the two fractures, MF2 and MF5, might consist of the most fresh granite in the surveyed area, which was concluded from the borehole radar tomography, and GPR images as well as the distribution of anisotropy.

  • To verify reinforcing effect of grouting materials on the water leakage region in dike, we performed various hydraulic test and we also applied electric resistivity survey including electrical resistivity tomography(ERT) to see resistivity variation before and after grouting. As the results of dipole-dipole array survey along dike, resistivity distribution after grouting was without noticeable spatial variation. Long term resistivity monitoring results at dike with Schlumberger array electric resistivity survey showed that the decreasing region of apparent resistivity and one dimensional inversion results were the occupied region by grout after grouting. From the ERT using check holes to inspect the effect of grouting, we could find that the ERT is quite effective to evaluate spatially grout region in dike.
