  • The radiation pattern of conformal transducers installed on a curved surface is likely to be complicated depending on the array pattern on the curved surface. In this research, the acoustic sources constituting a conformal transducer are arrayed in equi-angle, equi-interval, and geodesic dome forms, and the radiation pattern function of each of the array geometries has been derived, and therewith the radiation pattern has been analyzed for each array geometry. Based on the analysis result, we have determined the equi-interval array geometry that provides the widest beam width with the lowest side lobe level among the three array geometries. Results of the present work are expected to be utilized to the design of conformal transducer structures.

  • In this research, we have analyzed the trend of radiation pattern variation in relation to the change of design variables such as source interval and source number for conformal array transducers arranged in equi-angle, equi-interval, and geodesic dome forms. Through statistical multiple regression analysis of the results, we derived functional forms of the side lobe level and the beamwidth in terms of the design variables. Futhermore, the structure of the array transducer was optimized to achieve the smallest side lobe level while satisfying the requirements on beam width by the GA (genetic algorithm) method. Based on the optimized results, we have determined the equi-interval form as the optimal array geometry among the three conformal array geometries.

  • The conformal array sensor has different sub-array depending on different beam steering directions. According to the method to effective the sensor, the performance of the conformal array sensor can be different, where the sub-array selects an effective sensor. Also, due to the figure of the conformal array sensor, the figure of the sub-array can be different each other, which results in different performance on directivity index, beam width and etc. In this paper, two methods to select sub-array which is the criteria for each sensors position vector and directive vector were proposed. For two sub-array selection methods, the performance of the directivity index, horizontal and vertical beam width were compared with the average and variance. In addition, this comparison was conducted when the number of sensors was fixed. When the number of sensors was not fixed, the directional vector method mainly results in high performance, but the performance of vertical beam width was lower or equal. When the number of sensors was fixed, the performance of two methods is similar, but the performance of variance was deteriorated.

  • Sub-arrays of arbitrary conformal array have different geometric shape through steering direction, thus the beam patterns of sub-arrays are always non-uniform. In this paper, we apply the beam pattern synthesis method using convex optimization into the conformal array, and shows the improvement of uniformity of beam performance. The simulation is performed with the conformal array of cut-sphere shape. As a result, the standard deviation of 3 dB beamwidth in elevation is greatly reduced but the directivity index is also reduced. To alleviate this trade-off, we propose a convex optimization using a shading function.

  • The objective of this study is to optimize the shape of doubly curved surface where a conformal array is equipped. That surface is modeled with a double-ellipsoid solid controlled by four parameters. By analyzing the performance of the conformal array beams with the beam pattern synthesis, two design parameters are determined. Then, we define the weighted object function which is formulated as the sum of sharp indexes for directivity index, the elevation resolution, and the bearing resolution. The direct calculation on all grids is used to evaluate the weighted object function and seek the optimal value of two design parameters when the weightings are given. In the simulation, four kinds of weighting cases are respectively applied to evaluate the weighted object function. The optimal shapes of double-ellipsoid solid are shown in each case. Especially, when the uniform weightings are used, the double-ellipsoid solid with more smooth surface is obtained.

  • Noise reduction is an important factor to design low noise sensor array. In this paper three layers of the de-coupler in the conformal sensor array were used to investigate noise reduction. Conformal sensor array is positioned in the layers and the distance from the layer is 0.25cm~1.5cm. Transfer function in the frequency density function is investigated according to the three different positions. When increasing the embedded distance the flow noise decreased in the region of the kx>10.

  • Automatic magnetic abrasive polishing (MAP), which can be applied after machining of a mold on a machine tool without unloading, is very effective for finishing a free-form surface such as a complicated injection mold. This study aimed to improve the efficiency of MAP of a non-ferrous mold surface. The magnetic array table and control of the electromagnet polarity were applied in the MAP of a free-form surface. In this study, first, the magnetic flux density on the mold surface was simulated to determine the optimal conditions for the polarity array. Then, the MAP efficiency for polishing a non-ferrous mold surface was estimated in terms of the change in the radius of curvature and the magnetic flux density. The most improved surface roughness was observed not only in the upward tool path but also in the working area of larger magnetic flux density.

  • The noise itself that affects the sensor array is defined as the noise which happens in the place where the system is installed and the circumference noise which comes from the ocean. The array structure for detecting acoustic signal in the underwater effected turbulent layer flow noise. In this paper to design the conformal array spectral density function was introduced and several cases of flow induced noise which affect transfer function were simulated. Modified Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise. The effect of noise has been reduced as integrated sum of transfer function has been reduced by decreasing elastomer thickness and density when kx is in low wave number area. Also the characteristics of transfer function by Corcos wall pressure displayed the product of frequency density function. This simulation results can be applied to the conformal array design in unmmaned underwater vehicle in the near future.

  • In order to apply cylindrical periodic array to phased array antenna or frequency selective surface, efficient electromagnetic analysis is required. Finite periodic array is applied in real situation. But, generally, assumed that periodic structure is arranged infinitely, approximate electromagnetic characteristics can be obtained efficiently. But, difference of characteristics between real structure and approximate structure occurs because finite periodic array is approximated to infinite periodic array. Therefore, comparison and analysis of cylindrical infinite array and finite array are required. In this paper, cylindrical infinite periodic array are analyzed using cylindrical Floquet harmonics. Also, cylindrical finite periodic array is analyzed using method of moments (MoM) with thin wire approximation because periodic structures which are composed of strip with narrow width are analyzed. Transmission characteristics and surface currents of infinite and finite periodic structures are compared.
