  • High frequency active sonar is appropriate for detecting small targets such as a diver in coast environment. In case of using high frequency active sonar in shallow coastal environment, a false alarm rate is high due to clutters caused by marine biological noise, ship noise, wake, etc. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for target detection which is robust against clutter in active sonar system in shallow coastal environment. The proposed algorithm increases the rate of reduction clutter using calculation of statistical characteristics of signal and a clustering method. The algorithm is evaluated and analysed with sea trial data, as a result, that shows the rate of reducing rate of clutter of 96 % and over.

  • A reflection signal in an active sonar using a high frequency is mainly formed of a specular reflection from the surface of an object along with several equivalent scatters inside, which are characterized by the spatial distribution of the highlight on the object. This study analyze the existing echo signal synthesis models eq, random distribution model, equivalent interval distribution model & MUTAHID(Modified Underwater TArget by HIlight Distribution) model for simulated target, and compare the characteristics of the reflected signal synthesis results for each model in various conditions. These highlight distribution models can be efficiently applied to the simulated target signals synthesis of various real systems requiring the echo signal synthesis on the underwater target.

  • When a hydrofoil ship plies at high speed, there exist possibilities of collision with ocean mammals dwelling near the surface. An active sonar located within the immersed hydrofoil structure that provides the lift for the vessel, can be used for early warning of their presence. The proper functioning of the active sonar system depends on its ability to reject noise and pick up the target signal. In this article, we measured the noise on a hydrofoil of an operating ship with two flush-mounted hydrophones. The measurements were conducted for the purpose of (1) identifying the effect of operating state of machinery likes engine, cooler and generator (2) observing the change of noise depending on the measuring position (3) observing the change of noise with increasing ship speed. To verify our experiment, experiments were performed three times and the measured results are compared with other investigations and they show similarity to each other. The results are analyzed with frequency domain in order to apply to operating active sonar detecting system and focus on high frequency band within sonar's operating frequency region. Through these experiments and analysis, it is expected that we can identify the generated noise around hydrofoil where active sonar is installed and these results lead us to design active sonar that could distinguish target signal from noise more effectively.

  • In a shallow water waveguide, reverberation signals and their Doppler effects form the primary limitation on sonar system performance. Therefore, in the reverberation-limited environment, it is necessary to estimate the reverberation level to be encountered under the conditions in which the sonar system is operated. In this paper, high-frequency reverberation model capable of simulating the reverberation signals received by a high-speed moving source in a range independent waveguide is suggested. In this model, eigenray information from the source to each boundary is calculated using the ray-based approach and the optimizing method for the launch angles. And the source receiving position changed by the moving source is found by a scattering path-finding algorithm, which considers the speed and direction of source and sound speed to find the path of source movement. The scattering effects from sea surface and bottom boundaries are considered by APL-UW scattering models. The model suggested in this paper is verified by a comparison to the measurements made in August 2010. Lastly, this model reflects well statistical properties of the reverberation signals.

  • Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) are defined as substances that are likely to create a significant impact on human health and marine ecosystem when they are released into the marine environment. Recently, as the volume of HNS transported by ships increases, the rate of leakage accidents also increases. Therefore, research should be conducted to control and monitor sunken materials from the viewpoint of technology development for hazardous material leakage accident response. In this paper, acoustic detection experiments were carried out using HNS substitute materials in order to confirm the possibility of acoustic detection of sunken HNS on the sediment. The castor oil, which has a similar acoustic impedance with chloroform, is used as a substitute. 200 kHz high frequency signals were used to discriminate the reflected signals and measure reflection loss from the interface between water and castor oil. The reflection loss measured is in good agreement with the modeling results, showing a possibility of acoustic detection for sunken HNS.
