Yearly trend of milk intake in Korean children and adolescents and their nutritional status by the milk intake level using 2007-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (아동과 청소년의 연도별 우유 섭취량 변화와 우유 섭취량에 따른 영양상태 평가: 2007-2015 국민건강영양조사를 바탕으로)

  • Purpose: This study examined the yearly trend of milk consumption and the nutritional status of subjects aged 6-18 years using the 2007-2015 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Methods: Milk and dairy products were classified into plain milk, flavored milk, and dairy products (ice cream, milkshakes, cheese, and yogurt, etc.). This study compared the milk and dairy products intakes, some nutrients intakes and percent of dietary reference intakes for Koreans in the milk intake and non-milk intake groups. Results: Plain milk intake decreased with year (male, p = 0.0199; female, p < 0.0001; elementary school, p = 0.0013; high school, p = 0.0061), whereas flavored milk and dairy products intake in these subjects increased with year. In all subjects, 49.9% of subjects did not drink milk at all. The intakes of energy, protein, fat, calcium, phosphorus, and riboflavin in the milk intake group were significantly higher than those in the non-milk intake group, even after adjusting for covariates (p < 0.05). The odds ratio of the prevalence of nutritional deficiency in the non-milk intake group was 3.2 times higher than that of the milk intake group (p < 0.001), even after adjusting for covariates. The odds ratio for the prevalence of excess intake of the energy/fat was not significant with milk intake. Conclusion: The prevalence of milk intake decreased every year in the subjects. Calcium deficiency and nutritional deficiency were very high in the non-milk intake group. Efforts should be made to improve the calcium status in children and adolescents by strengthening nutrition education about the importance of milk intake.

The Moderating Effect of the Sports Activity Satisfaction in the relationship between Adolescents' Communication Skills and Positive Self-concept within Peer Group (청소년 또래집단 내 커뮤니케이션 능력과 긍정적 자아개념과의 관계에서 스포츠활동 만족도의 조절효과)

  • This research aims to verify the moderating effect of sports activity satisfaction in the relationship between adolescents' communication skills and positive self-concept within peer group. To achieve this purpose, this study extracted 250 samples from five boys high schools in Gyeonggi-do, and used survey of 232 students for actual analysis excluding the surveys with unfaithful answer or double entry. Questionnaire was used as a tool for collecting data and conducted frequency analysis, correlation analysis and moderator regression analysis to analyze the collected data. This study drew the following results. It was identified that sub-factors of sports activity satisfaction as social, physical, environmental and educational satisfaction have the moderating effect in the relationship between adolescents' communication skills and social self-concept with peer group. In other words, communication skills within adolescents' peer group play an important role in improving positive self-concept, but when sports activity satisfaction put as a moderating variable, adolescents' positive self-concept would be more improved.

A Study on the Factors Influencing Health Information Literacy of Adolescent (청소년의 건강정보 이해능력에 미치는 영향요인에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate factors affecting the adolescent's health literacy. First, we examined whether information literacy affects adolescents' understanding of health information, and then analyzed how demographic statistics and various other characteristics of adolescents affect health literacy. Data was collected through a survey of 277 middle and high school students. The results of analysis of Multi-regression showed that information literacy was found to have a positive impact on adolescent's health literacy. In addition, factors such as gender, grade level, academic performance, health concern, and frequency of use of digital devices were statistically significant in their affect on adolescent's health literacy. The results of this study can be used as basic data to improve adolescent' comprehension of health information.

Study of the relationship between filial piety and communication with parents in accordance with the general characteristics of teenagers (청소년의 일반적 특성에 따른 부모와 의사소통 및 효의 상관관계에 대한 연구)

  • This study analyzed the gap in perception between communication with parents and filial piety according to the general characteristics of teenagers. The test subjects were high school students from academic and vocational school from different districts of Seoul. A survey was conducted from March to July of 2014 to 290 high school students. Data analysis was conducted on the SPSSWIN 18.0 program using a t-test, one-way analysis of variance, correlation analysis, and other tests. The empirical analysis of the experiments were verified at the significance level of 5%. First, communication with fathers differed significantly depending on the school division, economic class, religion; and communication with mothers differed significantly depending on school division, grade-level, academic performance, domestic discipline, and economic class. Second, the perception of filial piety showed a significant positive correlation with the communication with the mother; and with the communication with the father. The implication of this study is that better communication between the parents and teenagers correlate with the higher filial piety according to the general characteristics of teenagers, and should become a central material for policy.

Development of Educational Program for Rocket Science for High School Students (로켓 추진 원리를 이용한 고등학생 대상 과학교육프로그램 개발)

  • This paper aims to design an educational science program based on rocket propulsion for high school students. Curriculum in high school physics and chemistry were evaluated to find out scientific match with basic principles in rocket propulsion. Also model rocketry was implemented as a part of the educational program. Solid propellants were prepared by the combination of sorbitol and candy after a selection process for solid propellant from several high caloric food candidates. Specially, this program was intended to give an opportunity to organize basic knowledge of high school science with model rocketry by measuring combustion temperature, thrust level of developed propellants. A pilot operation of the program was done with four high school students to evaluate the achievement of final goals of the program both in technical and educational aspect.

Evaluation of Vegetable Intakes according to Body Mass Index of Adolescents in Chungnam (충남 일부지역 청소년의 체질량지수에 따른 채소류 섭취상태)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate vegetable intakes according to body mass index (BMI) of adolescents. For this, 400 middle and high school adolescents living in Buyeogun, Chungnam were classified into underweight group, healthy weight group, and overweight group according to BMI, after which eating habits, daily intake levels of vegetables, perception of vegetables, and vegetable-related eating habits were compared and analyzed. As the reason for skipping breakfast, 'Lack of time (44.3%)' was the most frequently cited. In the case of unbalanced food intakes, the underweight group and overweight group showed the highest response for 'grain' while the healthy weight group showed the highest response for 'vegetables' with significant differences (P<0.001). Daily intakes of one serving size of vegetables was 3.3 in the underweight group, 3.8 servings in the healthy weight group, and 3.8 servings in the overweight group, but there was no significant difference. However, frequency of vegetable intake at lunch was once in the underweight group, which was significantly lower than 1.3 servings in the healthy weight group and 1.4 servings in the overweight group (P<0.05). Regarding perception of vegetables, perception of 'Vegetable consumption helps to get beautiful skin' (P<0.01) and 'I eat vegetables or don't eat depending on a cooking method' (P<0.05) were significantly higher in the underweight group. In the evaluation of vegetables-related eating habits, preference for vegetables in the underweight group was lower than that in the healthy weight and overweight groups (P<0.05). Summarizing the above results, vegetable intake by adolescents was generally low, and the frequency of vegetable intake at lunch as well as preference for vegetables were significantly lower in the underweight group. Studies to identify the relationships between adolescent body types and vegetable intakes are required.

COPING STYLE, FAMILY SUPPORT, PARENTING BEHAVIOR IN ADOLESCENTS WITH HIGHLY PERCEIVED STRESS (청소년의 높은 스트레스 지각과 대처양식, 가족 내 지지, 부모양육행동 간의 관계)

  • Objectives : This study was intended to compare coping style, family support, and parenting behavior between adolescent groups with different levels of perceived stress. Methods : A total of 795 high school students participated in this study. First, they were tested on the Perceived Stress Scale and then were separated into two groups depending on the level of perceived stress. Both groups completed the Scale for the Coping Style, the Family Environment Scale (relationship subscale) and Parenting Behavior Inventory. Results : The high stress group had significantly higher scores on all their coping scores than the low stress group. Also, the high stress group had significantly higher family conflict scores, lower family cohesiveness scores and lower expression scores than the low stress group. The high stress group experienced negative parenting behavior from both parents more often than the low stress group. In the adolescents with low family cohesiveness and expression, the use of active behavioral coping was decreased, if the higher stressful events occurred. The use of avoidant coping by these adolescents increased when there were higher levels of stress in their environment. Conclusion : Low family support directly reduced the usage of active behavioral coping and increased the use of avoidant coping strategy through the mediation of high stress condition.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE KOREAN FORM OF MORAL DEVELOPMENT INVENTORY FOR ADOLESCENTS (한국판 청소년용 도덕발달수준 평가도구의 개발)

  • Objects:This study was carried out to develop the Korean form of Moral Development Inventory for Adolescents designed to assess the principled morality in adolescents. And the auther also intended to find the demographic variables that influence the moral development. Methods:The Korean form inventory was applied to 507 middle and high school adolescents, and retest was done in 42 second year middle school adolescents with 3 weeks interval. Together this inventory, short form of Rest moral development which had been proved its reliability and validity, were administered to the all subjects for concurrent validity. And then the author examined whether this inventory discriminates between conduct disorder patients, psychiatric controls and normal controls in the level of moral development. Results:Test-retest reliability and internal consistency were very satisfactory. Concurrent validity with this inventory was also high level. And conduct disorder patients were scored significant lower than psychiatric and normal controls in the level of principled morality. The mean PM scores did not show significant difference according to the variables such as sex, birth order and religion. But there was significant difference according to the educational level of mother and places. Conclusions:These results indicate that the Korean form of Moral Development Inventory is a reliable and valid rating inventory to assess the moral development level in Korean adolescents.

RELIABILITY TESTING OF EATING ATTITUDE TEST FOR KOREAN ADOLESCENTS (한국판 청소년용 식이 태도 검사(EAT-26KA)의 신뢰도 조사)

  • Objectives:This study was designed for testing of Eating Attitude Test for Korean adolescents (EAT-26KA) on internal reliability and test-retest reliability and evaluation of each items through factor analysis. Methods:Total 1,160 middle and high school students were surveyed on June 1996. The questionnaire had been delivered by school teachers two weeks earlier before survey started. Among the 1,160 students, 114 students were selected by random. And then they were retested with same questionnaire on July 1996, four weeks later Result:Internal consistency of EAT-26KA was relatively good(Cronbach’s ${\alpha}$ =.83). There was statistically significance on test-retest reliability(r=.63 p<.01). But two items showed negative correlations(item No. 9, 17). and 5 items had low level correlation(p>.05, item No. 2, 6, 12, 21, 24). We performed factor analysis on whole items except No. 25 item. Result of factor analysis showed that the factor structure of EAT-26KA were different from that of EAT-26. Conclusion:The EAT-26KA is useful for the survey of the eating behavior and problems in Korean adolescents.

A Study of Factors Influencing Suicidal Ideation among Adolescents (청소년 자살생각 영향요인 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between suicidal ideation and psycho-social factors such as depression, stress, self-esteem, and support from family, friends, and teachers. Data from a sample of 224 male and female high school sophomore students. The results were analyzed by t-test, one-way ANOVA, person's correlation, and multiple regression. The findings of this research are as follows. Firstly, there was no statistically significant gender difference in suicidal ideation. However females reported greater suicidal ideation than males. Secondly, there were a statistically significant gender differences in depression. stress, self-esteem, and support from teachers. Thirdly, the variables in the cause model accounted for 42.3% for males, and 36.4% for females, of the variance in suicidal ideation. Fourthly, there were gender differences in the predictive power of variables within the cause model for suicidal ideation. Depression, self-esteem. and stress were found to be significant predictors of suicidal ideation in males. On the other hand, depression and lack of family support were shown as significant predictors of suicidal ideation in females. These findings suggest that the following approaches should be taken in order to decrease suicidal ideation among adolescents. With males self-esteem should be strengthened, depression should be reduced, and stress should be managed. With females family problems need attention, and depression need to be reduced.
