Genetic polymorphisms was investigated at five single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNP) sites in four porcine genes(ADCYAP1R1, FABP3, MC4R, and MYL2) and analyzed their statistical association with growth traits in F2 reciprocal-crossbred population between Landrace and Jeju native black pig(JNP). All populations, JNP, Landrace and their F2 were polymorphic for all five SNP loci tested, however, the homozygote T/T of FABP3 g.-158T>C and the homozygote G/G of ADCYAP1R1 intron 2 337A>G were not found in JNP and Landrace, respectively. The genotypes of ADCYAP1R1 were significantly associated with body weights(BW) at 3 weeks and at 20 weeks(P<0.05), respectivley, those of FABP3 g.-135delT were associated with late average daily gain(LADG) (P<0.01), and those of FABP3 g.-158T>G were associated with body weights during late growth period such as, BW20 and LADG(P<0.01). Those of MC4R were also significantly associated with BW10 suggesting by the difference of early average daily gain(EADG) (P<0.05), and with LADG(P<0.01). The body length of F2 animals was affected by the genotypes of ADCYAP1R1, MC4R, and MYL2(P<0.05), respectively. Among these, MC4R A/A homozygotes showed over 3 cm longer in body length than those of other genotypes. As the useful basic information, these results suggested that SNP markers showing statistical association with growth traits and the results help to select the sires of JNP for improving the productivity in JNP-related crossbreeding system in pig industry and also to construct the molecular breeding system for breed improvement of JNP itself.

Greenhouse experiments were conducted at the International Rice Research Institute during the 1989 dry season to investigate varietal differences in morpho-anatomical characters affecting spikelet filling in different tiller orders. There were varietal differences in tiller initiation and heading dates, and tiller duration. The main culm bad competitive advantage over the other tillers. The maximum contribution to filled spikelet weight was made by primary tillers in low tillering cultivars and by secondary tillers in high tillering cultivars. The reduction in inner vascular bundle (IVB) by tiller orders and the namber of IVB and outer vascular bundles (OVB) varied amop.g cultivars. The number of IVB in the peduncle of IR30, Rewa and Hybrid was more than OVB but in IR47705, Silewah, Unbongbyeo and SR14453, OVB was more than IVB. Early formed tillers produced more IVB than the late formed tillers. The number of IVB was positively correlated with number of spikelet and filled spikelet weight, however percent of filled spikelet did not show significant differences as well as 1000 spikelet weight in all types of cultivars.

The health status of three groups of Hanwoo steers (n=157) aged 2-3 years, raised at three different altitudes (600 m, n=50; 200-400 m, n=58; plane land, n=49) and environment with more or less similar management have been evaluated through hematological, biochemical and globulin examinations in order to determine the optimum environment suitable for raising cattle while at the same time minimizing the risk of disease. Five mL of blood samples from each animal were collected by jugular veinipuncture and 2 mL was transferred to a tube containing EDTA for complete blood count (CBC) and 3 mL in lithium heparin for chemistry screening (CS) and immunoassay. Among the CBC parameters a significantly higher white blood cell count (tWBC), total red blood cell count (tRBC), hemoglobin (Hb) and packed cell volume (PCV) were noticed in the high altitude groups, whereas those were lower in the plane land group. In the CS parameters higher levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), creatinine, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and total bilirubin (TBL) were found in the plane land group, whereas those were lower in the high altitude groups. The total protein (significantly) and globulins were higher in the 600 m group. The results of this study revealed that the overall health status of the Hanwoo cattle based on the hemato-biochemical indices was superior in the highest altitude and inferior in the plane land group but all the parameters were within the reference range in all the groups. Therefore, for recommendation of a suitable environment at an appropriate altitude for raising cattle there need to be further studied along with the hemato-biochemical parameters; considering, breeding, feeding, management, marketing, waste disposal and other factors.

호스피스 프로그램의 활성화와 질적 향상을 도모하여 오늘날 우리 사회의 요청에 응하고자 한국 카톨릭 호스피스 협회가 마련한 제 3차 호스피스 견학을 9월17일-9월28일까지 호주로 다녀왔다. 견학 인원은 서울, 강릉, 부산 등지의 의사, 간호사, 교수 및 봉사자 등 16명이었고 이들의 적극적인 참여로 보람되고도 만족스러운 결과를 얻을 수가 있었다.

1차 잡지는 과학정보 전달의 모체로서 또 과학의 한 사회제도(Social institution)로서 그 역사적 역할을 수행하여 왔음을 비롯하여, 여기서는 특히 공간되는 학술기록으로서의 기능, 또 연구달성을 공표해주는 최고기구로서의 기능에 중점을 두어 이를 고찰한다. 따라서 일차잡지의 역할에 대한 각종의 개혁론이 종래의 전통적 기능에 반하여 충격적으로 논해지고, 아울러 고도로 전자계산기화한사회에 임하여, 그 가능한 미래상을 예측해 본다.

우리나라의 산업정책은 대기업 중심의 대량생산에 의한 고도 성장정책으로 짧은 기간동안 산업분야별로 다소 차이는 있지만 눈부신 발전을 이룩하였다. 이러한 양적인 성장과정에서 가장 핵심이 되는 기술축적이나 핵심기술의 자체개발은 도외시되어 기초소재, 부품 및 주요기기의 수입의존율이 증가하는 현상이 발생하였고, 국내 생산제품의 개발은 주요국의 부품공급여하에 따라 좌우되는 기현상을 낳게 되었다.
