Dazaihu Diplomacy Between United Silla and Japan (통일기 신라와 일본의 대재부외교(大宰府外交)와 그 의미)

  • In the tribute system controlling international relations of pre-modern East Asia, conciliation diplomacy between royal authorities was a principle of diplomatic relations among each nation. Therefore, capitals where royal authorities really existed were political centers and diplomatic stages at the same time. Notably, diplomatic relations between United Silla and Japan were maintained dually by conciliation diplomacy between royal authorities and practical diplomacy through Dazaihu located in Tsukushi. Tsukushi located at the northwestern tip of Kyushu was a gateway to foreign nations and stronghold in terms of national defense. Amidst an East Asian war named Baek River Battle in 663, the royal court of Daehwa established Dazaihu here because it was necessary for diplomatic and military responses. Dazaihu established as part of diplomatic negotiation not only took diplomatic functions as an official residence since the latter half of the 7thcentury. and but also was used as a stage of official diplomacy between Silla and Japan. Diplomatic negotiation between Silla and Japan through Dazaihu was made in practical methods and such a situation could be confirmed through diplomatic documents exchanged between Silla and Dazaihu in the middle of the 8thcentury. At that time, protocols became an importan tissue.

World Logistics Evolution & Marketing Strategy for Korea's Enhanced Port Competition (세계물류발전과 한국의 항만경쟁력 강화를 위한 마케팅 전략)

  • This study aims at improving Korea's competitiveness in port logistics through marketing strategy with integrating the conceptual approach into the empirical one and combining both the oldest military treatise and the newest evaluating model in social science that was applied by the HFP(hierarchical fuzzy process) model enhanced by the KJ method. The empirical results of this study show Busan in the middle among subject ports. At present, Korea plays a reciprocal role in the port market in East Asia, but in the medium- and long-term, Korea's ports will vie together with most major ports in the East Asian region. A descriptive investigation shows that Korea's developing tasks in port logistics must be considered in the context of the direction for developing port policies, the necessity of expanding port facilities in the capital region, securing the sufficient traffic volume through the establishment of the hinterland linking system and its positive utilization, and reforming the direction for developing the global logistics through increased port competitiveness. In the short- and medium-term, Korea must use the opportunity factor of 'Growth and open door policy of China' as a geoeconomic advantage and to utilize Korea's ports as a gate to Chinese foreign trade. With the rise of China's economy, China also plays a significant role in both port and airport markets. Hence, the linking system between the two must be established to meet the expanding traffic volume, especially in the capital area. Moreover, it is necessary for Korea to secure port logistics through the establishment of the hinterland linking system and its positive utilization. The great accomplishment of this paper is to present strategies to increase Korea's port competitiveness in the rapidly changing environments of world logistics with the focus on both the oldest military strategic treatise and the newest empirical method in social science. In order to reinforce this study, it needs further compensative research because the evaluation structure could be subdivided with more extensive and precise criteria.

Training Method for Enhancing Classification Accuracy of Kuzushiji-MNIST/49 using Deep Learning based on CNN (CNN기반 딥러닝을 이용한 Kuzushiji-MNIST/49 분류의 정확도 향상을 위한 학습 방안)

  • In this paper, we propose a deep learning training method for accurately classifying Kuzushiji-MNIST and Kuzushiji-49 datasets for ancient and medieval Japanese characters. We analyze the latest convolutional neural network networks through experiments to select the most suitable network, and then use the networks to select the number of training to classify Kuzushiji-MNIST and Kuzushiji-49 datasets. In addition, the training is conducted with high accuracy by applying learning methods such as Mixup and Random Erase. As a result of the training, the accuracy of the proposed method can be shown to be high by 99.75% for MNIST, 99.07% for Kuzushiji-MNIST, and 97.56% for Kuzushiji-49. Through this deep learning-based technology, it is thought to provide a good research base for various researchers who study East Asian and Western history, literature, and culture.

A Study on the Architecture of the Original Nine-Story Wooden Pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple (황룡사 창건 구층목탑 단상)

  • According to the Samguk Yusa, the nine-story wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple was built by a Baekje artisan named Abiji in 645. Until the temple was burnt down completely during the Mongol invasion of Korea in 1238, it was the greatest symbol of the spiritual culture of the Korean people at that time and played an important role in the development of Buddhist thought in the country for about 700 years. At present, the only remaining features of Hwangnyongsa Temple, which is now in ruins, are the pagoda's stylobate and several foundation stones. In the past, many researchers made diverse inferences concerning the restoration of the original structure and the overall architecture of the wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple, based on written records and excavation data. However, this information, together with the remaining external structure of the pagoda site and the assumption that it was a simple wooden structure, actually suggest that it was a rectangular-shaped nine-story pagoda. It is assumed that such ideas were suggested at a time when there was a lack of relevant data and limited knowledge on the subject, as well as insufficient information about the technical lineage of the wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple; therefore, these ideas should be revised in respect of the discovery of new data and an improved level of awareness about the structural features of large ancient Buddhist pagodas. This study focused on the necessity of raising awareness of the lineage and structure of the wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple and gaining a broader understanding of the structural system of ancient Buddhist pagodas in East Asia. The study is based on a reanalysis of data about the site of the wooden pagoda obtained through research on the restoration of Hwangnyongsa Temple, which has been ongoing since 2005. It is estimated that the wooden pagoda underwent at least two large-scale repairs between the Unified Silla and Goryeo periods, during which the size of the stylobate and the floor plan were changed and, accordingly, the upper structure was modified to a significant degree. Judging by the features discovered during excavation and investigation, traces relating to the nine-story wooden pagoda built during the Three Kingdoms Period include the earth on which the stylobate was built and the central pillar's supporting stone, which had been reinstalled using the rammed earth technique, as well as other foundation stones and stylobate stone materials that most probably date back to the ninth century or earlier. It seems that the foundation stones and stylobate stone materials were new when the reliquaries were enshrined again in the pagoda after the Unified Silla period, so the first story and upper structure would have been of a markedly different size to those of the original wooden pagoda. In addition, during the Goryeo period, these foundation stones were rearranged, and the cover stone was newly installed; therefore, the pagoda would seem to have undergone significant changes in size and structure compared to previous periods. Consequently, the actual structure of the original wooden pagoda at Hwangnyongsa Temple should be understood in terms of the changes in large Buddhist pagodas built in East Asia at that time, and the technical lineage should start with the large Buddhist pagodas of the Baekje dynasty, which were influenced by the Northern dynasty of China. Furthermore, based on the archeological data obtained from the analysis of the images of the nine-story rock-carved pagoda depicted on the Rock-carved Buddhas in Tapgok Valley at Namsan Mountain in Gyeongju, and the gilt-bronze rail fragments excavated from the lecture hall at the site of Hwangnyongsa Temple, the wooden pagoda would appear to have originally been an octagonal nine-story pagoda with a dual structure, rather than a simple rectangular wooden structure.

AT WHAT TIME A DAY BEGINS IN THE KOREAN HISTORY? (한국사에서 하루의 시작은 언제부터인가?)

  • We have reproduced the records of lunar occultation recorded in the History of Three Kingdoms(삼국사기), the History of the Koryo Dynasty (고려사), the Annals of the Choson Dynasty (朝鮮王朝實錄), the Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of the Choson Dynasty (승정원일기), and obtained the epochs of their realizations. We analysed these results to understand how the system of hours had been kept and when a day began. During most of the periods encompassed by these annals, the 12 double hours(12진각법) and the system of 100 divisions of the day (백각법) had been used when the lunar and the solar eclipses were calculated by royal astronomers. In these systems, the starting point of a day is midnight. On the other hand, the five watch system of hours (경점법), in which a night is divided into five watches, was also used. In this system, a day begins at the sunrise. We found that the traditional twilight, called dusk and dawn (혼명) and used in the east Asian countries, largely corresponds to the nautical twilight in modern concepts. This fact means that the Korean expressions and words for time system in every day life had originated form the five watch system of hours. We pointed out that the sunrise and sunset were convenient boundary lines to ancient astronomers, as well as to farmers in the agricultural society. Our results can be used to determine the exact epoch of each astronomical record in chronicles.

A Study on the Cultural Exchange of the Weaving Skills and Patterns Witnessed in Geum-textiles between the East and West - from Ancient Times to the Tang Dynasty - (제직기술과 문양을 통해 본 금직물(錦織物)의 동서교류에 관한 연구 - 고대부터 당시대를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes and developments that occurred as a result of the exchanges of gyeong-geum(經錦), a warp-faced compound weave of East Asia, and wie-geum(緯錦), a weft-faced compound weave of West Asia. In order to maximize the efficiency of this research, topics were narrowed down to the weaving skills and patterns, and the period was limited to the Tang dynasty. The systematic characteristics and differences of gyeong-geum and wie-geum were compared and contrasted through different works of literature. Then the excavated remains of geum-textiles were analyzed and the characteristics of the geum-textiles were defined in chronological order. The origin of wie-geum is traced back to the time when West Asia started to imitate the weaving style of the East Asian gyeong-geum. When combined with the weaving skills of the West Asian, gyeong-geum, which broke through the West and developed into the weft-faced compound twill silk, or samite. The exchange of geum-textiles took place as the techniques of gastric filament woven geum-textiles returned to the East. Along with the pearl roundel motifs of Sassanian Persia, mythical animals and western motifs of hunter patterns were used for the patterns of wie-geumin during the early Tang dynasty. This tendency is related to pa-sa-geum(波斯錦), ho-geum(胡錦), beon-geum(番錦) according to the recorded literature. The 8th and 9th century are periods when the West Asian Persian style was abandoned and the East Asian style, samite, was established. Not only did S twist silk threads replace Z twists, but also the repetition of patterns unfolded along with the weft and the warp. As this tendency was strengthened after the 9th century, the expression of patterns became more vividly colorful and showed both elements of naturalism and realism. The characteristics of the Bosangwha(寶相花) pattern in the Tang period were established with the rampantly repeated rosettes with birds often holding auspicious branches, that fly amid floral compositions.

Lacquer as Adhesive : Its Historical Value and Modern Utilization (접착제로서의 옻; 역사성과 현대적 활용)

  • Lacquer is one of the most widely used natural resin in East Asia since Neolithic Age. As a major ingredient of lacquerware, lacquer is waterproof, insect-proof and rot-proof to be durable and anti-abrasion, generally utilized for mainly painting purpose. According to lacquerware excavated from several sites of Japan and China, lacquerware seems to appear in Neolithic Age. On the other hand in case of excavation research in Korea, lacquerwares are found after the Bronze Age. The initial purpose of lacquer is estimated to be adhesive, regarding the literatures mentioning bitumen(Yeoksceong ), animal glue(Kyeo) and egg alumen(Nanbaek). Especially piece of jar coffin unearthed in Pyeongtaek Daechu-ri site had trace of restoration by lacquer and hemp as an evidence of lacquer for adhesion in Pre-Three Kingdoms period. Since then a trend to restore the broken ceramics with lacquer and decorate with golden foil lasted especially in Joseon Dynasty. In the field of gold plated lacquer method, mother-of-pearl inlaying technique for lacquerware and restoration of buildings, lacquer is still used as adhesive. Due to matter of reversibility lacquer is being avoided for conservation and restoration of cultural heritage. Lacquer as a traditional material for adhesive since ancient times, however, has advantage in adhesion strength and durability. Because synthetic resin adhesive has problem of emission of volatile organic compounds and aging over time, lacquer receives attention recently. On the contrary, by combination adhesive from mixing lacquer and animal glue, already proved the possibility of applicability and chemical modification. A research to utilize lacquer as modern paint or functional material is also conducted continuously also in China and Japan. To put traditional material into practical use and modernize, chemical research from the molecular level of the lacquer is necessary in the near future.

On some Problems in describing of the History of Ancient Chinese Dance (중국 고대 무용사 기술에 있어서의 몇 가지 문제점)

  • This paper were reviewed on some problems in the early history of Chinese dance written by scholars of contemporary China. Results of the review, were found the following problems; First, In describe to the early history of Chinese dance, contemporary Chinese scholars do not distinguish myths, legends and historical materials, so the history of ancient Chinese dance makes to mystery, thus, eventually will cause a lack of truthfulness. Second, In order to fill the lack in the early history of Chinese dance, the Chinese scholar often use a drawing of earthenware or mural. However, in certain cases, the same drawing by the other observer to be interpreted differently. In this case, if use as evidentiary material, there is a problem. Third, Most contemporary Chinese scholars usually say that the origins of dance is labor. It is to have originated from materialistic historical view can be said. However, in ancient China, but rather about the origin and function of dance there were diverse views. Therefore, this aspect should be cautious.

한국(韓國) 『상서(尚書)』학(學) 연구(硏究)의 회고(回顧)와 전망(展望)

  • 한국에서의 유가(儒家) 경전의 수용은 삼국시대에 시작되었으며, 이는 신라(新羅)시대 태학(太學) 교육 중의 한 과목이 "상서(?書)"였다는 "삼국사기(三國史記)"의 기록을 통해 알 수 있다. "상서(?書)"는 고대 정치제도 및 정치사상과 매우 긴밀한 관련을 갖는 경전인 까닭에 중국뿐만 아니라 한국에서도 통치자들의 시정방침(施政方針)상의 중요한 근간(根幹)이 되었다. 이러한 연유로 "상서(?書)" 연구를 통해서 경서 내용을 알게 될 뿐만 아니라 그 시대의 정치사상도 알 수 이해하게 될 것이다. 그런데 한국에 있어서 경학 연구는 중국과 달리 전통적 사서오경(四書五經) 혹은 십삼경(十三經)이 아니라 "사서삼경(四書三經)"을 중심으로 전개되었다. 또한 개별 경전에 대한 연구를 기준으로 살펴보면, "사서(四書)"의 경우, 특히 "논어(論語)"에 대한 연구가 집중적으로 이루어졌다. 삼경(三經)의 경우, "주역(周易)"이나 "시경(詩經)"은 이미 많은 연구가 이루어졌으나, 한국에서 "상서(?書)" 연구는 아직 전자만큼 활발히 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 또한 성균관대학교에 발간한 "한국경학자료집성(韓國經學資料集成)"을 살펴보면, 한국 경학 저술 총 145권 가운데 "상서(?書)" 부분이 22권을 차지하고 있다. 즉 거의 6분의 1이 "상서(?書)" 관련 저술이라고 할 수 있다. 본고는 "학술총람"과 공구서(工具書) 전자 시스템에 수록된 1901년부터 2014년 상반기에 이르기까지의 100여 년 동안 한국(韓國)에서 발표된 "상서(?書)" 관련 학술단행본 학위논문 학술지논문 등을 검토하고, 이를 통해 한국에서의 "상서(?書)"학(學) 연구(硏究)를 회고(回顧)하고 또 그 미래를 전망(展望)해 보도록 할 것이다. 전적으로 보면 한국 "상서(?書)"학 연구는 3가지를 포함한다. 첫째는 한국에서 중국 고전 "상서(?書)" 원전(原典)에 대한 탐구(探究)인데 이를 '중국 "상서(?書)" 연구' 라고 칭하였다. 둘째는 조선시대 유학자의 서경 저술을 중점 대상으로 연구하는 것으로 이를 '한국 "서경"학 연구'라고 이름 하였다. 셋째는 한국 이외 다른 나라 학자들의 조선시대 "서경" 저술에 대한 연구이다. 이상 3가지를 모두 대상으로 삼아야 온전한 한국 "상서(?書)"학 연구라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 향후의 연구 방향은 다음 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다: (1) 역본의 연구 (2)학파별 연구 (3)문헌적 연구 (4)경연과 과거시험의 각 나라 비교 연구이다. 한국 "서경"학에 대한 연구를 통해 우리는 조선시대의 사상과 문화 특히 정치사상을 파악할 수 있으며 또한 전통시대 동아시아 각국의 학문 양상까지도 인식할 수 있을 것이다. 요컨대, 아직까지 한국의 학계에서 한국 "서경"학을 중심으로 하여 이러한 측면을 밝히는 연구는 부족한 편이라고 할 수 있겠으며, 그렇기에 연구할 영역이 더욱 많은 셈이라고도 할 수 있는 것이다. 바로 이 연구영역들에 더욱 심혈을 기울여 앞으로 더 깊이 있고 폭 넓은 연구가 진행되기를 기대할 수 있게 되는 것이다.

Consideration of Korean Ajaeng and Chinese Yazheng Based on Organology (한국 아쟁(牙箏)과 중국 알쟁(軋箏)의 악기학적 고찰)

  • Ajaeng is the bowed string instrument among zither instruments in East Asia, which has a circular form to date, and it has established itself as an important instrument in today's creative Gugak along with traditional music. Looking at previous prior studies, musical instrument studies have not been actively conducted due to insufficient data from musical history studies, and this study looked at the origin, form of musical instrument, and performance methods of zither bowed string instrument through historical records of Chinese Yazheng and music drawings. The analysis of various documents showed that Ajaeng originated from an ancient Chinese traditional musical instrument called Chuk. In terms of the performance style, the Chinese Yazheng had different musical forms depending on the purpose and location of the performance, and there was a method of standing up and fixing the musical instrument horizontally to the ground. Ajaeng in Korea has been handed down without much change in the form of musical instruments introduced in China during the Goryeo Dynasty and the way they sit on the floor and play on a pedestal. Through this study, we hope that it will help to preserve and develop traditional music and Korean traditional musical instruments by enhancing understanding of musical.
