Synthetic rubber based pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) usually containing SIS or SBS block copolymer, tackifier, plasticizer, and other additives are now widely used on various applications. As these PSAs are physically crosslinked and can be applied without the use of solvent, they are thermally processable and environmentally friendly. However these PSAs cannot be used in high temperature applications and in applications where solvent and chemical resistance properties are required. We developed the PSA adding UV curable system, such as thiol-ene system, to increase adhesion properties at elevated temperature. The adhesion properties such as probe tack, peel strength, shear adhesion failure temperature (SAFT) were evaluated. The probe tack test was conducted with varying probe materials and coating thickness of PSAs. Using the contact angle, the surface property of the cured PSAs was also observed.
Modified polyethylenes with polar side groups of -COOK, $-CONH_2$, and -COOH were prepared at a dispersion state in water by reacting poly(ethylene-co-methylacrylate) (PEMA) with aqueous solution of KOH and ammonia. Types and their contents of side groups were investigated by infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis and atomic absorption analysis. Solution viscosity and surface tension were also measured as a function of solid contents. Stability and transparency of the dispersions were greatly affected by the content of COOK in the side groups. The stable dispersion could be prepared at a composition of COOK of 20 mole% at least. The transparency was increased with increasing the COOK contents, but decreased with increasing the amide content at a constant composition of COOK. Solution viscosities increased abruptly at a lower solid content when the COOK contents were increased, implying higher entanglement between the chains in dispersions with higher content of hydrophilic COOK group. The dispersions of higher COOK content revealed lower surface tension values.
In this study, silicone rubber (SR40) and fluororubber (FKM) mixture blends were prepared by various weight percentages, and their properties were characterized. The crosslinking rate increased as the contents of SR40 due to the crosslinking agent in SR40. As contents of FKM increase in SR40/FKM blends, thermal decomposition temperature of blends increased. When SR40/FKM blend ratio was at 50/50, the thermal decomposition stabilization was higher than that of pure SR40. The contact angle of SR40/FKM blend increased as the increase of SR40 contents in blend. All composition of SR40/FKM blends showed typical phase separation morphology. As the contents of SR40 increase in SR40/FKM blend, the degree of separation in SR40/FKM blends also increased.
In view of environmental considerations, the control of carbon dioxide (CO2) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is one of important issues in the film and coating industries. Therefore, UV-curable system has been developed due to minimize emissions of VOCs and reduce CO2 emission due to low energy consumption from fast curing. Also, biodegradable polymers economically are attractive because of environmental and economic concerns associated with huge waste plastics. In this study, UV-curable polyurethane acrylates with different compositions of biodegradable polylactide (PLA) diol and poly(ethylene glycol) as diols were synthesized and curing reaction of their end-capped acrylates was performed by UV exposure. Tensile strength, elongation, and Tg of the UV-cured polyurethane acrylates increased with PLA diol content in the diol while their hydrophilicity and thermal stability increased with the PEG content. These results indicated a property of UV-cured polyurethane acrylates could be controlled by environment-friendly diols.

Chloride attack to reinforced concrete structures located in seaside can cause a serious problem of durability and maintenance during the service life. Corrosion of reinforced steel bars in concrete decreases the bond strength and finally causes the detachment of concrete cover. Polymer cement mortar is usually adopted to repair the deteriorated RC structures because of its strong bonding property. The recovered load-carrying capacity after the repair was simulated by non-linear FEM analysis. The properties of concrete, repairing materials, bonding materials and reinforced bar were used as input data. Four types of redispersible polymer powders were used as components of polymer cement mortar. Pull-off tests were carried out to examine the bond properties such as rigidity and strength. Effects of a corrosion inhibitor and the loss of reinforced bars due to the corrosion were also considered in this study. FEM modeling and analysis were conducted to propose the universal model. Physical bonding in the relationship between repair materials and steel reinforced bar is more dominant than chemical bonding.
Interfacial and microfailure properties of carbon fiber/epoxy matrix composites were evaluated using both tensile fragmentation and compressive Broutman tests with an aid of acoustic emission (AE) monitoring. A polymeric maleic anhydride coupling agent and a monomeric amino-silane coupling agent were used via the electrodeposition (ED) and the dipping applications, respectively. Both coupling agents exhibited significant improvements in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) compared to the untreated case under tensile and compressive tests. The typical microfailure modes including fiber break of cone-shape, matrix cracking, and partial interlayer failure were observed during tensile test, whereas the diagonal slippage in fiber ends was observed under compressive test. For both loading types, fiber breaks occurred around just before and after yielding point. In both the untreated and treated cases AE amplitudes were separately distributed for the tensile testing, whereas they were closely distributed for the compressive tests. It is because of the difference in failure energies of carbon fiber between tensile and compressive loading. The maximum AE voltage for the waveform of carbon or basalt fiber breakages under tensile tests exhibited much larger than those under compressive tests, which can provide the difference in the failure energy of the individual failure processes.
Water In this study, CR/silica nanocomposites were produced by dispersing nanosilica on chloroprene rubber (CR) to apply toluene-free primers for mobile devices. The properties of the modified chloroprene rubber using nanosilica was evaluated through FT-IR, SEM, EDS, Contact angle. The SEM images indicated that P-4 (4 phr) was the most homogenously dispersed. Pencil hardness measurements and Contact angle indicated that the hardness of the CR/silica nanocomposite and the hydrophobicity increased with increase in the silica content. The peel strength of P-4 (4phr) was the highest and the initial peel strength of P-4 sample (2.9 kgf/inch) was 50% higher than that of the P-0 sample.
The critical micelle concentration (CMC), the counter ion binding constant (B) and the aggregation number (N* ) for the mixed micellization of sodium dodecanoate and sodium n-octanoate as two anionic surfactants have been investigated by means of electric conductivity and light scattering. As its experimental results are found to be deviated from ideal mixed model, thus two different kinds of regular solution models such as Rubingh and Motomura are used for interpreting our experimental data. The stability of the mixed micelles has been confirmed from the negative values of the standard Gibbs energy of mixed micellization ΔGmicel,0 over all compositions and the measured values of ΔGmicel,0 agreed with the theoretical ones within the experimental error.
In this study, we synthesized a excellent adhesive chlorinated polyolefin (CPO)-g-$\beta$-carboxy ethyl acid ($\beta$-CEA) by radical polymerization. Also, we prepared low-level toxic primer for polypropylene (PP) using CPO-g-$\beta$-CEA and studied toxic and adhesion property. We identified the graft structure and properties of the prepared chlorinated polyolefin-g-$\beta$ CEA using FT-IR, DSC, UTM. Graft ratio were optimum value at 5 wt% $\beta$-CEA contents in CPO-g-$\beta$ CEA. And the primer for PP was prepared with CPO-g-$\beta$ CEA and adhesive builder PX-95 content. Finally, optimum peel strength obtained when PX-95 contents was 3 wt%.

Na-MMT intercalated with PEGMA macromer was prepared using an EtAc/acetone mixture (1/1 by volume) as a solvent. PEGMA/(Na-MMT)-co-MMA/MA nanocomposites was synthesized by copolymerizing intercalated compound with MMA and MA, and then characterization was performed. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that in the case of Na-MMT intercalated with PEGMA macromer the d-spacings of silicate of Na-MMT increased with increasing of Na-MMT loading. As the Na-MMT loading increases Tg showed increasing trend through the DSC measurement. TGA result showed that thermal stability of PEGMA/(Na-MMT)-co-MMA/MA nanocomposites improved a little more than the pure PEGMA-co-MMA/MA.
