  • In order to clarify the relationship between the characters and the influence of each character on the yield of perilla, correlation coefficients and path coefficients were calculated. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. A highly significant positive correlation was found between stem length and stem diameter, number of pods per plant, stem weight, respectively. Number of internodes showed also significant positive correlation , with number of pods per plant, stem weight, respectively as well as the relationship between number of valid branches and number of pods per plant. On the other hand, a significant negative correlation was appeared between number of valid branches and l000-grain weight as well as the relationship between number of pods per plant and l000-grain weight. 2. It seemed to be clear that stem weight, number of pods per plant, l000-grain weight, number of valid branches and stem diameter have direct and positive influence on the yield of perilla. 3. Indirect influence was observed between stem length and stem weight, between number of valid branches and number of pods per plant, and between number of pods per plant and stem weight, respectively. 4. It may be concluded that the yield of perilla is positively correlated with stem length, number of valid branches, number of pods per plant, l000-grain weight and stem weight.

  • The experiment was carried out to make clear the root characters and relationships among some quantitative characters of soybeans. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Stem diameter was shown the greater growing in thickness after one month from sowing than the earlier stage, and the greater growing was shown in fertile bed soil than in sand soil. 2. The elongation of plant top in soybean plant was also shown the greater rate in bed soil than in sand soil 3. The length of plant root was longer than the length of plant top in the earlier stage of growing, and the length of root was much greater in sand soil than in fertile bed soil. 4. Weight of plant top was shown more in bed soil than in sand soil, but this tendency was shown more greater rate in the length of plant top than in weight of plant top. 5. Weight of root was more compared with weight of plant top in the earlier stage of growth, and also more greater rate was shown in sand soil than in fertile bed soil. 6. Highly significant correlations were shown among five quantitative characters, namely stem diameter, length of top, weight of top, length of root and weight of root, etc.

  • This study was to compare arterial stiffness and hemodynamic responses between male smokers and non-smokers. This study also investigates the influences of smoking before exercise on arterial stiffness and hemodynamic responses. 24 male subjects of age 20-29 without history of cardiorespiratory disease were divided into smokers and non-smokers. Smokers had more than 5 years of smoking experience. In order to evaluate the effects of pre-exercise smoking, smokers were tested twice, once with a cigarette before the exercise and the other once without one. Data was collected from bio-impedance analysis, SphygmoCor XCEL, graded exercise test, and fitness test. Main results of this study are as follows: First, there are differences between smokers and non-smokers in cardiorespiratory and hemodynamic response functions, as shown by maximal oxygen consumption, exercise duration, and heart rate. Second, the although the arterial stiffness between smokers and non-smokers showed statistically significant differences in the speed of the pulse wave velocity and augmentation index, smoker had a faster rate. It shows that smoking behavior has a negative impact on the cardiovascular system. Third, pre-exercise smoking behavior does have an impact on cardiorespiratory and hemodynamic response functions, as shown by exercise duration and heart rate. Lastly, arterial stiffness between smokers and non-smokers showed statistically not significant in the speed of the pulse wave velocity and augmentation index. However, the difference was not statistically significant. Brachial systolic pressure, a component of pulse wave analysis, on the other hand, was significantly dependent on pre-exercise smoking behavior. Subjects who participated in this study are college students in early 20s. Given their relatively short history of smoking, it is possible that their smoking habits are not severe enough to develop into cardiorespiratory or cardiovascular diseases. But Smokers showed lower levels of cardiopulmonary functions, as maximal oxygen consumption and exercise duration than nonsmokers.

  • The study was conducted on growth and yield of potatoes in a wick hydroponic culture as affected by concentration of aqueous extracts in order to develop natural agricultural resources using Persicaria longiseta. Each 500 ml of distilled water (control) and P. blumei extracts (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) was applied to potato plants at 5 d intervals from 1 d after potato transplanting. The potatoes with P. blumei extract emerged 1 d earlier and had 0.3 to 0.4 more stem numbers per plant compared with those of control plot. The plant height was higher in plots with P. blumei extract than in control in early stage of potatoes (50 d), but there was no significant difference observed after mid-stage of potatoes (70 and 90 d). The stem diameter and fresh weight of potatoes estimated a higher values in plots with P. blumei extract than in control plots, although there was no statistical difference. The 100% P. blumei extract increased by up to $13.8kg/m^2$ of potato yield. The numbers of tubers in classes of < 5 g and 5 to 30 g per plant did not show a specific trend among experimental treatments while it in class of > 30 g was much higher in plots with P. blumei extract than in control plot. Accordingly, the P. blumei extract had a positive effect on the growth and yield of potatoes, could be applied as of eco-friendly fertilizers

  • This study has been conducted from April 25, 1999 to June 25, 1999 in Jeju Province in order to determine the influence of seeding date on growth, yield and chemical composition of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 decreased the plant height of Kenaf from 278.5 cm to 205.7 cm. As for the number of leaves, number of withering leaves, number of branches, and stem diameter decreased as the seeding date was delayed. As the seeding date was delayed, fresh forage yield decreased from 98.5MT/㏊ to 45.9MT/㏊, dry matter yield from 20.7MT/㏊ to 8.2MT/㏊, crude protein (CP) yield from 2.9MT/ha to 1.3MT/ha and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yield form 1l.6MT/㏊ to 5MT/㏊. However, both leaf yield and stem yield were nearly the same tendency. Delaying the seeding date from April 25 to June 25 increased crude protein contents of leaves from 21.5% to 24.4%, crude fat contents from 5.2% to 6.1%, nitrogen free extract (NFE) contents form 39.9% to 41.2% and TDN contents from 64.3% to 69.7%. However, delaying seeding date decreased crude fiber contents from 20.8% to 17.5%, and crude ash contents from 7.9% to 7.0%. Based on the these findings, optimum seeding date for forage production of Kenaf seems to be about 25 April in atmospheric phenomena and volcanic ash soils of Jeju island.

  • Cassia mimosoides var. nomame was grown at five phosphate rates (0, 5, 15, 25 and 35 kg/10a) at Cheju in 1998 to determine the influence of phosphate rate on growth, forage yield and quality. As phosphate rate increased from 0 to 35kg/10a, the plant growth was increased such as days to flowering, plant height, the number of branches and green leaves per plant, stem diameter and SPAD (Soil Plant Analysis Development) reading values of leaves but the number of withering leaves per plant decreased. Fresh forage yield was 3, 291kg/10a at 0 kg/10a of phosphate rate and increased 5, 200 and 5, 230 kg/10a at 25 and 35 kg/10a of phosphate level, respectively. Dry matter, crude protein and total digestible nutrients (TDN) showed the same tendency of changes as the fresh forage yield. Crude protein, crude fat, nitrogen free extract and TDN content increased but crude ash and crude fiber content decreased as the increasing of phosphate rate increased.

  • To define natural embryo growth and germination of the Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A.Meyer) seed, freshly harvested and depulped seeds were seeded on nursery bed at Aug. 5 without stratification. At 100 days after seeding, embryo/endosperm length ratio of the seeds in nursery bed was higher than that of the seeds which were stratified with conventional method for 100 days. And also there was no significant difference between dehiscence ratio of the seeds in nursery bed and that from stratification with sand. The germination ratio of the ginseng seeds seeded without stratification at Aug. 5 was about 57% in average of 2 years and was not significantly lower than that of the seeds seeded after stratification at Nov. 15. And there were also no significant differencies of plant growth after germination between the ginseng seedlings from two seeding methods.

  • Orostachys japonicus, a monocarpic plant, is artificially grown in greenhouses. The study was carried out to examine the effect of shading (0, 35, 55, 75, 95%) on growth, morphological characters, and flowering. The treatments were done on August 25 and afterward samples were taken every 2 weeks until October 20, in which growth, morphological and flowering related characters were measured. With severer shading plant height, inflorescence length, number of leaves including bracts and stem diameter were decreased although severely declined in 95% shading treatment. Leaves and bracts, stem, root, shoot and total dry weights increasingly declined with severer shading. Florets formed on the inflorescence showed similar response to the shading treatment as plant height did. Flowering of the florets was not observed throughout all the sampling period, meaning that different light intensities by shading did not affect their flowering.
