The Relationships Between Mycoplasmic Pneumonia and Production Traits in Pigs (돼지의 마이코플라즈마성 폐렴과 경제형질간의 상관관계 연구)

  • Pneumonia is one of the important diseases in commercial pig. In order to delineate the relationships with pneumonia and productions traits, five different economic traits including carcass weight(CW), backfat thickness(BF), meat quality(MQ), carcass characteristics(CC) and pork belly thickness(PB) were measured in 6,362 commercial pigs. Significant differences were observed in all the traits with pneumonia(P<0.01). Carcass weight and backfat thickness decreased significantly as the symptom of pneumonia was severed (P<0.01). Also, when the pneumonia was severed, the carcass characteristics and meat quality became worse compared with normal unaffected animals(P<0.01). In case of pork belly thickness, the significant decrease was observed in pneumonia infected animals compared with normal animals(P<0.01). Based on this study, the pneumonia infection affects most of the important economic traits in pigs and it is ultimately needed to pay more attention to prevent this disease.

  • This study was conducted to estimated the genetic and phenotypic correlations between economic traits and certain other traits in Korean Native Ogol fowl The data analysis were the record of 450 pullets bred from 150 dams and 20 sires of Korean Native Ogol fowl at Chungnam National University from June 18, 1987 to April 6, 1989. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1 The genetic correlation coefficients of the economic traits and body shape components were as follows : between body weight and shank length, breast width. breast girth, tibia length were 0.210~0.788, 0.231~0.826, 0.610~0.995 and 0.096~0.503 between age at first egg and shank length, breast width, breast girth, tibia length were 0.555~0.626, 0.149~0.270, 0.370~0.445 and 0.014-0.124. between number of egg production and shank length, breast girth, tibia length were -0.446~-0.167, -0.162~-0.320, 0.076~0.336 and 0.203~0.312 : between egg weight and shank length, breast width, breast girth, tibia length were 0.132~0.498, 0.236~0.410, 0.148~0.775 and -0.019~0.593, respectively. 2. The genetic correlation coefficients of the economic traits and egg components were as follows : between body weight and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.083~0.591, 0 110~0.541 and 0.336~0.782 between age at the first egg and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.476-0.692, 0.265~0.631 and 0.420~0.519 between number of egg Production and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were -0.578~-0.240, -0.255~-0.060, -0.477~-0.313. between egg weight and albumen weight, yolk weight, shell weight were 0.825~0.939, 0.382~0.564, 0.374~0.337, respectively. 3. The genetic correlation coefficients of the economic traits and egg qualifies were as follows : between body weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were 0.215~0.367, 0.248~0.650, 0.161~0.624, 0.157~0.449. between number of egg production and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were -0.384~-0.207, -0.557~-0.306, -0.555~-0.198, -0.582~-0.074 between egg weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height, Haugh units were 0.276~0.697, 0.290~0.627, 0.238~0.538, -0.207-0.020, respectively. 4. The genetic correlation coefficients of egg compositions and egg qualities were as follows : between albumen weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were 0.110~0.584, -0.380~-0.002, 0.239~0.887 and -0.195~0.279 : between yolk weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were -0.204~0.160, 0.294~0.133, -0.049~0.133 and -0.196~-0 136 : between shell weight and egg shape index, shell thickness, albumen height and Haugh units were 0.127~0.503, 0.127~0.476, 0.140~0.273 and -0.172~0.233, respectively.

Identification of Polymorphisms in CAST Gene Associated with Economic Traits in Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) (한우(Bos taurus coreanae)의 CAST 유전자 내 변이지역 탐색 및 경제형질과의 연관성 분석)

  • A number of studies have shown that the calpain system is important in normal skeletal muscle growth. An increased rate of skeletal muscle growth can result from a decreased rate of muscle protein degradation, and this is associated with a decrease in activity of the calpain system, due principally to a large increase in calpastatin (CAST) activity. The CAST gene, mapped to BTA 7, is considered a candidate gene for beef tenderness and muscle growth. The present study used comparative sequencing of five novel polymorphisms located within exon 20 and 22 of the bovine CAST gene in Hanwoo: exon20- 109737G/A, 109749T/C, 109823T/C, exon22- 116151G/A, intron- 109926G/A. The association of the CAST SNPs with economic traits was studied. The 109926G/A showed a significant effect only on the longissimus muscle area (LMA, p<0.05) in Hanwoo. 109926G/A with the genotype GG had a significantly higher effect on LMA (75.35) than the genotype AA (69.6, p<0.05). Also, the 116151G/A showed a significant effect only on weight at 18 months (W18, p<0.05). 116151G/A with the genotype GG had a significantly higher effect on W18 (428.54) than the genotype AA (408.87, p<0.05).

  • From development of computer science, genetic algorithm has been applied to many fields for search like non-linear problem based on various variables and optimization process. Among others, in the data mining field, there are methods to select the best input variables for model accuracy and various predict models which were merged by using the genetic algorithm. In the meantime, to improve and preserve quality of the Hanwoo (Korean cattle) which is represented the agricultural industry in our country, we need to find out outstanding economical traits of Hanwoo in having specific genotype of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) which is inherited to next generation. According to, This research proposed the selecting method to find genotype of SNPs marker which affects economical traits of the Hanwoo by using the genetic algorithm. And we selected the best genotypes of the principal SNPs marker by applying to real data on Hanwoo genetic.

Analysis of the ADSF/resistin Gene Polymorphism Associated with Carcass Traits in Hanwoo (한우 ADSF/resistin 유전자의 단일 염기 다형과 육질관련형질 상관 분석)

  • Adipocyte-specific secretory factor(ADSF)/resistin, an hormone, is a small cysteine-rich protein secreted from adipose tissue and ADSF/resistin has been implicated in modulating adipogenesis in human and rodents. Although the exact role of ADSF/resistin in bovine has not been identified, it may have directly or indirectly involved in adipocyte differentiation. The objective of this study was to investigate its DNA polymorphism associated with carcass traits in Korean Native Cattle(Hanwoo). To investigate DNA polymorphism in Hanwoo ADSF/resistin gene, blood samples were taken from 295 Hanwoo steers belonging to progeny testing at Hanwoo Improvement Center in Korea. Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNPs) were found in intron regions but not in any other regions including promoter (1.7kb) and 4 exons. The highest frequency among SNPs was C186A(0.16/0.84) following G964A (0.156/0.884). The significant correlation(P<0.05) between the SNPs and economic traits was found on 764Ains associated with marbling but not from any other SNPs determined.  A computer simulation was also conducted to assess the efficiency of marker assisted selection(MAS) versus the conventional breeding scheme.  Results revealed that MAS was more efficient as a breeding tool compared to the conventional. In conclusion, ADSF/Resistin gene is one of candidate genes to evaluate the quality, especially marbling score, in Hanwoo.

Association between Economic Traits and Candidate Gene Polymorphism in Korean Native Pig and Duroc (한국 재래 돼지와 듀록의 경제형질과 후보 유전자 다형성간의 연관성 분석)

  • MC4R, PRKAG3, FABP3, and ESR have reported as important candidate genes related to some economic traits in pigs. To investigate the association between these genes and economic traits, the analysis of restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) was conducted on 147 individuals (96 Durocs and 86 Korea native pigs; KNP) using single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). Different genotype frequencies of 4 candidate genes were observed in Duroc and KNP. There were significant associations between MC4R polymorphic site and average daily gain (ADG, p<0.05) and backfat thickness (BF, p<0.05) in the Duroc, ADG (p<0.05) and days to 70 kg (p<0.05) in KNP. PRXAG3 polymorphic site were significantly .elated to BF (p<0.05) in the Duroc, ADG (p<0.05) and days to 70 kg (p<0.05) in the KNP. In FABP3, association with BF (p<0.05) in the Duroc, ADG (p<0.05) and days to 70 kg (p<0.05) in the KNP were found. ESR polymorphic site was not significantly associated to any other traits.

  • This study was conducted to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations on economic traits in Korean Native Ogol Fowl. The data analysis were the record of 450 pullets produced from 150 dams and 20 sires of Korean Native Ogol Fowl raised at Chungnam National University from June 18, 1987 to April 6, 1989. The results obtained are summarized as follows ; 1. The average body weights at 8 and 24 weeks,300 and 500 days of age were 514.54, 1490.96, 1753.47 and 2013.31g respectively, The age of first egg was 179.19 days, and the number of egg Produced to 300 and 500 days of age were 80.12 and 162.82 e89s, respectively. The egg weight at first egg, 300 and 500 days of a8e were 40.03 and 49.92 and 55.59g, respectively. 2 The heritability estimates based on the variance of sire, dam and combined components were 0.441-0.661, 0.120-0.490, 0.345-0.465 for body weight; 0.365, 0.207 and 0.282 for age at first egg; 0.354-0.362, 0.204-0.230 and 0.279-0.296 for number of egg production: 0.259-0.464, 0.512-0.633 and 0.386-0.540 for egg weight, respectively. 3. The genetic correlations coefficients of economic traits were as follows: the coefficients between body weight with age at first egg, number of egg Production and egg weight were 0.539-0.617, -0.520-0.157 and 0.180-0.754; between age at first egg with number of egg production and egg weight were -0.717 and 0.552-0.587; between number of egg production and egg weight was -0.383-0.381, respectively.

  • It is important to detect the gene-gene interaction in GWAS(Genome-Wide Association Study). There are many studies about detecting gene-gene interaction. The one is Multifactor dimensionality reduction method. But MDR method is not applied continuous data and expanded multifactor dimensionality reduction(E-MDR) method is suggested. The goal of this study is to evaluate the power of E-MDR for identifying gene-gene interaction by simulation. Also we applied the method on the identify interaction e ects of single nucleotid polymorphisms(SNPs) responsible for economic traits in a Korean cattle population (real data).

  • The gene which is related in the disease of the human has been searched among numerous genes in GWA(Genome-Wide Association) research. However, most current statistical methods used to detect gene-gene interactions in disease association studies cannot be easily applied to handle the whole genome association study(GWAS) due to heavy computing. Therefore SNPHarvester is developed to find the main gene group among numerous genes. This research finds the superior gene groups which are related with the economic traits of the Korean beef cattle, not that of human, among sets of SNPs by using SNPHarvester, and also finds the superior genotypes which can enhance various qualities of Korean beef among SNP groups.
