  • A behavior of ridge-cut rock slope had been monitored by installing inclinometers and regional slope movement toward rear side of cut face was detected. To delineate the governing factors of slope behavior, especially backward slip of ridge-cut slope, petrographic characteristics of rock cores obtained from four drilled boreholes had been examined. BIPS images inside boreholes had been acquired and structural characteristics of slope rock had been studied. Mechanical properties of discontinuity planes distributed in the drilled core had been measured and the shear strength of coal seam imbedded-discontinuity planes also had been obtained by performing the direct shear test. Monitoring results of slope behavior had been analyzed by comprehensibly considering both the mechanical and structural characteristics of slope rock and coal seam-imbedded discontinuity planes, and the potential governance of coal seam and clay minerals embedded in the joint plane on the regional slope behavior has been also identified.

  • Geogrid reinforced soil structures with segmental block facing have been increased since 1990's, because of the convenience of installation and the flexible appearance. In this paper, the behavior of the segmental reinforced retaining wall was analysed with the results of field monitoring. The height and length of reinforced wall are 12m and 25m, respectively. The field measurement equipments are horizontal and vertical earth pressure cells, settlement plate, strain gauge, inclinometer, and displacement pin. Based on the field monitoring, the horizontal earth pressure was approximately 0.3times higher than that of the theoretical method and the maximum tensile strength of reinforcement was 26.2kN/m. The displacement of facing wall was 23mm at the point of 7.1m height of the wall and toward the wall facing. The results of the study indicate that the segmental reinforced retaining wall is in a stable condition because of good compaction & reinforcement effects, and long period of construction time. Finally, the computer program of SRWall is very useful tool to design the segmental reinforced retaining wall.

  • Environmental monitoring systems are widely developed for analyzing environment and understanding an ecosystem according to the advance of wireless communication and various sensing techniques. To extract useful information, it requires high cost for processing a query, because these systems have to handle huge volume of raw sensor data which is transmitted from a wide area in environmental monitoring applications. Besides, it is also hard to answer an user defined query which requests to check current and near future condition. In this paper, we propose the monitoring system structure for processing a user defined query for environmental monitoring. It also describes the utilization of sensor data filtering and abstraction model. The designed abstraction model which is based on the slope grid in GIS supports fast data access and update. To analyze condition, the extracted data from abstraction model of each sensor type is combined in a query processor. It is useful to provide meaningful information to users.

  • In order to investigate Propeller Open Water (POW) characteristics for the high-speed propeller in Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT), the high-capacity inclined-shaft dynamometer was designed and manufactured. Its measuring capacities of thrust and torque are ${\pm}2200N$ and ${\pm}120N-m$, respectively. The driving motor is directly connected to the propeller shaft. Inclined angle of the propeller shaft can be adjusted up to ${\pm}10^{\circ}$. As the pressure inside LCT can be adjusted in the range of 0.1~3.0bar, we can carry out the POW test at high Reynolds number (above $1.0{\times}10^6$) without propeller cavitation and the cavitation test in uniform flow. After the new dynamometer setup in LCT, the Reynolds number variation test and propeller open-water test were conducted at the inclined angle of $0^{\circ}$ and $6^{\circ}$. The present POW results of the new dynamometer are compared with those of the existing high-capacity dynamometer in LCT and of the dynamometer in the towing-tank. Through systematic model tests and comparison with their results, the performance of the new inclined-shaft dynamometer was verified. It is thought the POW test for the high-speed propeller should be better conducted at high Reynolds number.

  • Because pile behavior is governed by geotechnical characteristics of surrounding soils, it is therefore necessary to monitor ground responses during pile driving and analyze the relation between the behaviors of pile and ground. In this research, the 57 m long PHC pile was driven into deep soft clay in the Nakdong River estuary area. During and after the pile driving, the ground responses and the residual load of pile have been monitored for about a year, by using piezometers, inclinometers, level posts for surface settlement, and strain gauges in piles etc. As the results, the residual load by the negative skin friction along the pile increased with the dissipation of the excess pore pressure, which was developed by pile driving and reclamation. About 30% of the maximum residual load developed due to the dissipation of the increased excess pore pressure during the driving. It is thus emphasized that most piles driven in clay deposits need to be designed by considering negative skin friction along the pile.

  • We present an implementation result of a computer GUI-based simulator using MATLAB to verify the performance of interferometric radar altimeter(IRA) which is possible to measure the slant range altitude and the cross-track angle to the nearest point for terrain aided navigation(TAN). After a brief description of the principle of TAN and IRA, we present that the grids are divided for the modeling of the reflected signal in digital elevation map(DEM) and so the radar cross section(RCS) of each grid is calculated and the signal-noise ratio(SNR) of the reflected signal in the radar beam width. And the signal processing procedures of the IRA and the structure of the IRA simulator are shown.

  • In this study, a new method to estimate the bridge deflection is developed by using Wireless Tilt Sensor. Most of evaluations of structural integrity, it is very important to measure the geometric profile, which is a major factor representing the global behavior of civil structure, especially bridges. In the past, Because of the lack of appropriate methods to measure the deflection curve of bridges on site, the measurement of deflection had been done restrictly within just a few discrete points along the bridge. Also the measurement point could be limited to locations installed with displacement transducers. So, in this study, the deflection of the structure was measured by wireless tilt sensor instead of LVDT(Linear Variable Differential Transformer). Angle change of tilt sensor shows structural behavior by the change of the resistor values which is presented to voltage. Moreover, the maximum deflection was calculated by changing the deflection angle which was calculated as V(measured voltage) ${\times}$F(factor) to deflection. The experimental tests were carried out to verify the developed deflection estimation techniques. Because the base of tilt measuring is the gravity, uniform measurement is possible independent of a measuring point. Also, measuring values were showed very high accuracy.

  • Nine wells have been developed for uses of thermal waters at the Icheon hot spa area. Drilling depths of those hot spring wells range from 166 to 294 m and their piezometric heads are located at about 50 m below the surface. Using the differences between the surface and bottom temperatures within all boreholes, we can simply estimate geothermal gradient in this area. Thus, we obtained the highest, lowest and average gradient values as $64^{\circ}C/km$ from SB-2 well, $45^{\circ}C/km$ from SB-1 well and approximately $54.28^{\circ}C/km$, respectively. However, observing the MRD-2 well additionally drilled into the depth of 996 m, we found out that this study area has widely experienced the temperature disturbance due to thermal groundwater penetration through the fracture systems within the depth of 720 m. Unlikely this phenomenon, we can conclude that the groundwater flow below the depth of 720 m does not exist. Therefore, using only those temperature data below the 720 m depth, we can estimate reasonable geo-thermal gradient values as $33^{\circ}C/km$ in this study area. Pumping test shows that outflowing temperature is $36^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the temperature logging data at 720 m depth.
