Chicken is one of the major livestock, especially for supplying proteins to human. The chicken genome size is approximately one-third compared with that of the human genome and regarded as a valuable model animal for genetics and development biology. In this study, we constructed the genetic linkage map for Korean native chicken (KNC) using 131 microsatellite (MS) and 8 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. As a result, the total map length was calculated as 2729.4 cM and the average genetic distance between markers was 19.64 cM. The marker orders and genetic distances were well matched with the consensus linkage map except for the physical order of ADL0278 and MCW0351 in GGA8. In addition, the recombination rates in marcrochromosomes were 3.7 times higher than that of microchromosomes. The average numbers of alleles, expected heterozygosity (Hexp) and polymorphic information content (PIC) values were calculated as 5.5, 0.63 and 0.58, respectively. These results will give useful information for the understanding of genetic structure and QTL studies in KNC.

This study is to evaluate moisturizing effect and durability of UV A/B blocking activity with multiple (W/O/W) emulsion system. Most of the sun protective products come to be hot issue having both high SPF and long-lasting activity as using special products when is going out, mountain climbing and sports. Also, many consumers prefer the products which have the excellent waterproofing activity of sun care cosmetics as well as the non-sticky feeling that carried out the study of the sensorial science and texture preference. Therefore, development of the specific formulation using this multiple (W/O/W) emulsion technology, it has O/W type hydro skin feel having soft and moist texture when it is treated on the skin. Finally, this formulation is instantly changed to W/O type feel after adsorbed into the skin. The purpose of this study is to get high SPF lasting effect having high water resistance tactivity with high functional multiple (W/O/W) emulsion cream. We used major ingredients, UV-B absorbers were selected with ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate, isoamyl-p-methoxycinnamate, ethylhexylsalicylate, and octocrylene, UV-A absorbers were selected with butylmethoxydibenzoylmethane, bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxy phenyltriazine. SPF effect of O/W type cream was 34.1. SPF effect of W/O/W type cream was 40.6 (increased about 19%). Water resistance effect after 4 hours, SPF effect of O/W type cream was 3.6 (quickly drop down). SPF effect of W/O/W type cream having 81.0 % waterproofing effect was 32.7 (decreased about SPF 7.9). Moisturizing effect of O/W cream at first was superior comparing multiple emulsion. But after 3 hours quickly was drop-down. Moisturizing effect of multiple emulsion was high comparing O/W type and other sun block creams after 4 hours was constantly maintaining water-content.

This study was conducted to determine the inactivation effects of slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) on microorganisms attached to salted Chinese cabbage and food materials of kimchi, such as slice radish and green onion. In addition, changes in microbial and physicochemical quality of manufactured kimchi during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks were investigated. Compared to the untreated control with tap water, total bacterial counts (TBC) of Chinese cabbage, slice radish, and green onion were reduced by 1.75, 1.68, and 1.03 log CFU/g at dipping times of 20 min, 5 min, and 10 min, respectively, upon treatment with 30 ppm SAEW at $40^{\circ}C$. Effect of microbial inhibition was higher in salted Chinese cabbage brined in 10% salt (w/v) of 30 pm SAEW at $40^{\circ}C$ than in untreated control with tap water, as indicated by 1.00 log CFU/g reduction. TBC of kimchi manufactured with materials treated with 30 ppm SAEW at $40^{\circ}C$ was not significantly affected compared to untreated control, although coliforms were remarkably reduced compared to the untreated control. At the beginning of storage (1 weeks), TBC and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) counts increased by approximately 9 and 7.66~8.18 log CFU/g, respectively, and coliforms were completely eliminated. The pH and acidity of kimchi at 2 weeks were 4.34~4.49 and 0.55~0.66%, respectively, and then slowly decreased. The texture (firmness) of kimchi decreased with storage time, but the difference was not significant. This combined treatment might be considered as a potentially beneficial sanitizing method for improving the quality and safety of kimchi.
In this study, furfural, which is one of the value-added chemicals, was produced from the hydrolyzate of Quercus mongolica using dilute acid pretreatment, and the optimal pretreatment condition was determined by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) to obtain high yield of furfural. Based on Central Composite Design, the pretreatment experiment was designed with parameters such as reaction temperature ($X_1$), acid concentration ($X_2$), and reaction time ($X_3$) as independent variables, while dependent variable was furfural concentration (Y), and furfural yield (Z) was shown as percentage of Y per a dry weight basis. According to results of RSM, it was confirmed that reaction temperature ($X_1$) was the most influence factor and reaction temperature ($X_1$)-acid concentration ($X_2$) was the most significant interaction factor on furfural yield. Also, the optimal condition for the highest furfural yield was predicted at reaction temperature of $184^{\circ}C$, acid concentration of 1.17%, and reaction time of 5 min by RSM, and expected maximum yield of furfural was 6.37%. Experimentally, the maximum yield of furfural produced at above optimal condition was 6.21%, and it was considerably similar with the predicted value, and therefore the model for furfural production from the hydrolyzate of Quercus mongolica during dilute acid pretreatment could be built using RSM.
Purpose : Hypocalcemia is one of the major causes of convulsion in infants. The causes of hypocalcemia are hypoparathyroidism, deficiency and metabolic abnormalities of vitamin D, or increased uptake of inorganic phosphorous, etc. We analyzed the causes, symptoms and signs, treatment, and clinical courses of hypocalcemia as, recently, there were many clinical experiences of hypocalcemic infants under age of 6 months in the department of pediatrics, Kyungpook University Hospital. Objects and Methods : The authors observed 11 infants with hypocalcemia who had been admitted to the department of pediatrics, Kyungpook University Hospital, during the period of February 1992 to April 1997. Various clinical and laboratory data concerning causes, clinical courses and treatment of hypocalcemia were analyzed retrospectively Results : (1) The sex incidence revealed male predominance with male to female ratio 4.5 : 1. The mean age at onset of symptoms was $2.2{\pm}1.1$ months old. (2) The causes of hypocalcemia were vitamin D deficiency in 8 cases and excessive inorganic phosphate intake in 3 cases. (3) All eleven patients manifestated convulsion which was generalized tonic-clonic in 9, and focal clonic in 2 cases. (4) Serum calcium concentrarion increased from $6.3{\pm}0.9$ mg/dL to $9.9{\pm}1.7$ mg/dL after therapy of $1,25(OH)_{2}D_{3}$ with or without calcium(P=0.0008), and serum ALP concentration decreased from $1,418{\pm}864$ U/L to $772{\pm}503$ U/L (P=0.0112). Serum iPTH levels were high in all 11 patients initially. All showed decreased $25(OH)D_3$ levels initially. (5) All patients were treated successfully with $1,25(OH)_{2}D_{3}$ and/or calcium supplement. Conclusions : Vitamin D deficiency should be considered as one of the causes of hypocalcemia even in formula(known as vitamin fortified) feeding infants. Fortunately, they were successfully treated with $1,25(OH)_{2}D_{3}$.
To develop a wrapping film, which suppresses the microbial decay through the storage and prolongs the selflife of fruits and vegetables, the antimicrobial packaging films were prepared and applied to the preservation of strtwberries and cucumbers. Low density polyethylene(LDPE) film of 50㎛ thickness was faricated with 1% of Scutellariae baicalensis extract. The LDPE film impregnated with Scutellariae baicalensis extract showed antimicrobial activity on the disk test against Bacillus cereus, Escherchia coli and Fusarium sp.. The antimicrobial film changed the color and light transmittance, but did not affect heat shrinkage, mechanical tensile strength and wattability. Strawberries and cucumbers were separately wrapped with packaging films in the state of closely-adhered packaging as well as modified atmosphere packaging(MAP). The wrapped strawberries and cucumbers were stored for 21 days at 5$\^{C}$ and for 40 days at l0$\^{C}$, respectively. For the packaged strawberries and cucumbers at 5$\^{C}$ and 10$\^{C}$, the LDPE film impregnated with Scutellariae baicalensis extract showed the reduced growth of total aerobic bacteria, molds and yeasts and did not give any negative effect on other quality attributes during storage in comparison with conttrol film without any additive.
The purpose of this study is to optimize the parameters related to consensus coherency within the PCL 1300, the operating program of wind profiler, from a validation of wind data between rawinsonde and wind profiler at Chupungryeong ($36^{\circ}13^{\prime}$, $127^{\circ}59^{\prime}$) site in Korea. It is then to analyze the diurnal and seasonal characteristics of the turbulence energy dissipation rate (${\varepsilon}$) in clear and rainy days from March 2009 to February 2010. In comparison of the wind data between wind profiler and rawinsonde during April 22-23, 2010, it was shown in a big error more than $10ms^{-1}$ over the height of 3,000 meters in the zonal (u) and meridional (v) wind components. When removing more than $10ms^{-1}$ in each wind speed difference of u an v components between the two instruments, the correlation coefficients of these wind components were 0.92 and 0.88, respectively, and the root mean square errors were 3.07 and $1.06ms^{-1}$. Based on these results, when the data processing time and the minimum available data within the PCL 1300 program were adjusted as 30 minutes and 60%, respectively, the bias errors were small. In addition, as a result of an analysis of sensitivity to consensus coherency of u and v components within the PCL1300 program, u components were underestimated in radial coherency, instantaneous and winbarbs coherency, whereas v components were overestimated. Finally by optimizing parameters of the PCL1300 program, the diurnal and seasonal means of ${\varepsilon}$ at each height were higher in rainy days than those in clear days because of increasing in the vertical wind speed due to upward and downward motions. The mean ${\varepsilon}$ for clear and rainy days in winter was lower than those of other seasons, due to stronger horizontal wind speed in winter than those in other seasons. Consequently, when the turbulence energy dissipation rates in the vertical wind speed of more than ${\pm}10cm\;s^{-1}$ were excluded for clear and rainy days, the mean ${\varepsilon}$ in rainy days was 6-7 times higher than that in clear days, but when considering them, it was 4-5 times higher.
This in vitro study was undertaken to observe whether citric acid application aids the attachment and proliferation of human periodontal ligament cells to the root surfaces of periodontally diseased teeth. The roots were prepared so that the comparison could be made among the control healthy root surface, citric acid demineralized and non-demineralized root planted surfaces. Prior to the cell attachment experiment, each groups were prepared for scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examinations of root surface morphology, All specimens were fixed with phosphate buffered glutaraldehydes, postfixed with phosphate buffered osmium tetraoxide and stained with phosphate buffered tannic acid. dehydrated in ethanol, critical point dried, sputter coated with gold and examined under the SEM. In the cell attachement experiment, human cultured periodontal ligament cells at concentration to $4.5{\times}\;10^4\;cells/ml$ were seeded in each culture well which contained prepared roots and incubated for 30min 1, 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours at 37, 5% $CO_2$air incubator. Than the specimens were prepared for SEM examination using, the same methods as described above. In the cell proliferation experiment, $5{\times}\;10^4\;cells/ml$ cells were seeded incubated with the specimens for 6 hours. Then, all of the specimens were moved into fresh culture well and incubated for 24, 48, and 72 hours. The cell counting was done after trypsinization, under light microscope. The results were as follows. When viewed the surface morphology prior to the cell attachment, the non acid treated root planed surface displayed scaling striation and occasional bacteria and calculus. The citric acid treated specimens displayed little debris on the surface and funnel shaped orifices of dentinal tubules. There were no apparent differences in the morphology of cells attached to the control and experiment groups. However, in initial attachement, there was a slight more enhanced appearance in attachment in citric acid treated groups than other root surfaces. After 6 hours of incubation, most of the cells initiated the alteration of cell morphology from ovoid to spindle shapes. After 24 hours of incubation, most of the cells displayed proliferated appearance and connected with each other via numerous processes. In the cell proliferation experiments, there were statistically significant increased number of cells in citic acid treated groups than other groups.
Background : In mammals, the activity of antioxidant enzymes is increased in adult lung to adapt to hyperoxia. The increase of these activities is augmented in neonates and is known as an important mechanism of tolerance to high oxygen levels. Peroxiredoxin(Prx) is an abundant and ubiquitous intracellular antioxidant enzyme. Prx I and II are major cytosolic subtypes. The aim of this study was to examine th Prx I and II mRNA and protein expression levels in adult rat lungs and to compare then with those of neonatal rat lungs exposed to hyperoxia. Materials and Methods : Adult Sprague-Dawley rats and neonates that were delivered from timed pregnant Sprague-Dawley rat were randomly exposed to normoxia or hyperoxia. After exposure to high oxygen level for a set time, the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and lung tissue were obtained. The Prx I and II protein expression levels were measured by western blot analysis using polyclonal rabbit anti-Prx I or anti-Prx II antibodies and the relative expression of the Prx I and Prx II per Actin protein were obtained as an internal standard. The Prx I and II mRNA expression levels were measured by northernblot analysis using Prx I and Prx II-specific cDNA prepared from pCRPrx I and pCRPrx II, and the relative Prx I and Prx II expression levels per Actin mRNA were obtained as an internal standard. Results : Hyperoxia induced some peak increase in the Prx I mRNA levels after 24 hour in adult rats. Interestingly, hyperoxia induced a marked increase of Prx I mRNA 24 hour in neonatal rats. However, hyperoxia did not induce an alteration in the expression of Prx II mRNA in both the adult and neonatal rat lungs. Hyperoxia did not induce an alteration in the expression of the Prx I and Prx II protein in both the adult and neonatal rat lungs. Hyperoxia did not induce an alteration in the amount of Prx I and Prx II protein all the times in the bronchoalveolar fluid of adult rats. Conclusion : Prx I and II is differently regulated by hyperoxia in adult and neonatal rat lung at the transcriptional level. The prominent upregulation of Prx I mRNA in neonates compared to those in adults by hyperoxia may be another mechanism of resistance to high oxygen levels in neonate.

In this study, we tried to develop a coating agent for the fresh-cut fruits used in cakes. First, the coating agent mixing ratios of sugar, pectin, sodium alginate, carrageenan, xanthan gum, vitamin C, and purified water were selected to be 55, 2, 2, 0.04, 0.1, 0.05, and 40.81% (w/w), respectively. In a freeze-thaw stability of the coating agent, the viscosity remained constant for 3 cycles of freezing and thawing repetition process, but showed a slightly decreasing trend in the 4th repetition process (P<0.05). On the other hand, the sugar content, pH, and chromaticity remained constant even in the 4th repetition process. Pineapple coated with the coating agent had smaller weight loss, hardness changes, and total bacteria distribution compared to the uncoated pineapple (P<0.05). In the chromaticity, both of the two pineapples experienced browning with increasing storage duration, as L value decreases and b value increases. However, when the color difference was compared, the progress of browning for the uncoated pineapple was faster than the coated pineapple. Also, the progress of browning at $4^{\circ}C$ was found to be slower than the progress of browning at $25^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the storage stability of the fresh-cut fruits could be improved by coating the fresh-cut fruits for cakes with the coating agent and storing at a low temperature, which would contribute to extending the shelf-life of cakes.
