  • This study is to investigate causal relationship between individual life satisfaction and air pollution, using ordered probit model with the KLIPS panel dataset for 1998-2008. As determinants, both individual economic and socio-demographic characteristics are considered. Empirical results show that the degree of air pollution has negative effects on individual life satisfaction. The effects of other variables are similar to those of existing studies. This study found that life satisfaction increases along with income increase. However, at a certain point, the increase of life satisfaction becomes smaller even with an increase in income, indicating non-linear effect. It implies that the Easterlin's paradox can be applied to Korea's case. The increase of the other person's income measured by income per capita in the region where respondent resides has negative effects on life satisfaction. On the other hand, a person who has married, own house, stayed healthy, and highly been educated is likely to have higher life satisfaction. Additionally, a person with many household members, urban resident, unemployed or self-employed are negatively correlated with life satisfaction.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between parenting experiences of married immigrant women and their mental health including self-esteem and depression. Data came from 471 married immigrant women with a child who participated in the home visiting program for children of multicultural families provided by Multicultural Family Support Centers. The results indicated that, the mothers' self-esteem was related to their perceptions of parenting, parenting stress, marital satisfaction, and social support. In addition, the mothers' depression was associated with their proficiency in Korean, household income, perception of parenting, parenting stress, knowledge on child development, marital satisfaction, and social support. These findings suggest that the parenting experiences of married immigrant women are closely related to their mental health. Parenting education programs that increase parenting efficacy and reduce parenting stress would be helpful to improve the mental health of married immigrant women.

The results are as follows: First, the most often-used conflict coping style was 'compromise', and the least-used was 'smoothing over', in both cases of husbands and wives. For example, wives used 'compromise' and 'integration' more frequently than husbands, but 'smoothing over' was more often used by husbands. Third, the most important variable that influenced wives' stress and marital satisfaction was husbands' conflict coping styles. Their own conflict coping styles and demographic variables came as the next. Fourth, the only conflict coping style of wives that influenced the stress and the marital satisfaction was 'dominance'. On husbands' side, 'compromise (stress and marital satisfaction)' and 'dominance (marital satisfaction)' functioned as important variables.

Out of total 300 sheets of questionnaire form distributed to a population of those men, 247 sheets of questionnaire form were collected from them. Then, total 220 sheets of complete and valid questionnaire form except incomplete 27 sheets were finally selected for statistical data analysis. Major findings of this study can be summed up as follows: First, in terms of role performance, it was found that group with more daily life assistances had higher marital stability than group with less daily life assistances. Accordingly, it was found that daily life assistance was correlated with marital satisfaction. Secondly, in terms of role performance, it was found that group with more marital conflicts had higher marital stability than group with less marital conflicts. Based on these findings, it is concluded that male spouses' positive role performance in international marriage has positive effects on marital stability in relationships with their foreign female spouses.
