Medication is widely accepted as an effective method to reduce the problem of attention deficit, hyperactivity, impulsivity, resistance and violence of ADHD children. However, it does not provide us with the solution on the conflicting routinized behavioral patterns to gain a high level of self-control and acceptable behavior. As a way of replacing medication, this study applies the social skills training program for ADHD children and measures the level of improvement of social skills and the change of the behavioral patterns. The experiment is carried out on 16 children ranged from 6 to 13 years of age for 10 weeks. The patients are divided into three groups:a pure ADHD group, an ADHD group with conduct disorder, an ADHD group with mental retardation and other symptoms. The change of symptoms and the change of social skills are measured by the Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL), the ADD-H Comprehensive Teacher’s Rating Scale(ACTeRS) and the Social Skills Rating Scale(SSRS), and finally Mastson Evaluation of Social Skills for Youth(MESSY). Wilcoxon signed ranks test is used to evaluate the effect of the treatment, and Kruskal-Wallis test is also used to measure the change after the treatment in each of the three groups. In the ADHD group with conduct disorder, the examination of the effect of the treatment shows a significant reduction of violence in the area of behavior(p<.05), and a significant difference of activity and social skills in the area of social competent(p<.001). In the ADHD group with mental retardation and other symptoms, a significant rise of social skills is found in the area of social skills evaluation (p<.05). However, there is no significant difference of effect by the treatment among the three groups. In addition, the current examination shows that the social skills training program does not make a statistically significant contribution to the social skills of the ADHD children. On the other hand, the training helps some children, when it is suitable for the characteristics and accompanying symptoms of the children:it reduces the level of violence in the ADHD group with conduct disorder, and it raises the social skills in the ADHD group with mental retardation. In other words, the social skills training program will reduce the conduct disorder and helps peer relation for ADHD children.

Objectives : Cognitive dysfunction, including inattention, is often observed in patients with depression. Inattentive symptoms in patients with depression is similar to those among attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients. It is important to diagnose the two diseases accurately, because the treatment varies depending on the cause of inattention. This study aimed to investigate the coexistence rate of ADHD and the correlation between ADHD symptoms and depression in patients with depression. Methods : Participants in this study were 158 outpatients presenting with depression, who visited the psychiatric department from March 2015 to July 2018. Participants divided into a depression and a non-depression group according to the Korean version of the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) score and were administered the following : a sociodemographic variables form (age, sex, academic background, occupation), the self-reporting test for adult ADHD (Adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder self-report scale-V 1.1; ASRS V1.1), and the Korean version of the Connors adult ADHD rating scale (K-CAARS). Descriptive statistical analysis, crossover analysis, t-tests, and Pearson's correlation coefficient were conducted on the data. Results : The coexistence rate of adult ADHD symptom was as high as 36.7% in patients with depression (p<0.001). In K-CAARS, the depression group (Inattention=1.80, Hyperactivity=1.92, Impulsivity=1.56, Self-concept=2.06) showed higher average scores on ADHD symptoms than the non-depressive group (Inattention=1.28, Hyperactivity=1.25, Impulsivity=1.09, Self-concept=1.42, p<0.001). Conclusions : This study confirmed that ADHD symptoms coexist in the depression group. When evaluating the symptoms of patients who complain of depression, it is suggested that they should be accurately diagnosed and appropriately treated with interest to the coexistence of ADHD symptoms and the possibility for ADHD diagnosis.

Objectives : This study was conducted to investigate the association between the symptoms of boys with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the attention-deficit hyperactivity symptoms, temperament and character patterns of their parents. Methods : Forty-five boys with ADHD and who met the DSM-IV criteria were evaluated by using the ADHD rating scale (ADHD-RS), and their parents completed the Korean Adult ADHD scale (K-AADHDS) and the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Results : The parental K-AADHDS scores were not associated with the ADHD-RS total score and the subscale scores of their siblings. The most potent variable related to the ADHD-RS total score was the maternal self-directedness, and the second was the maternal persistence. The maternal self-directedness was the variable that was most correlated with the hyperactivity/impulsivity subscale scores of the ADHD-RS. Conclusion : The results suggest that the paternal ADHD symptoms may not be related to the ADHD symptoms of boys with ADHD. Higher maternal self-directedness and persistence may decrease overall the ADHD symptoms of these boys, and higher maternal self-directedness itself may predict lower hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms of the boys with ADHD.

Citrin deficiency (OMIN #605814) is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the SLC25A13 gene mutation with abnormal biochemical findings, including increased serum ammonia, citrulline, arginine, galactose, serum threonine-to-serine ratio, serum pancreatic secretory trypsin inhibitor, and alpha-fetoprotein. Citrin deficiency can manifest in three ways: in newborns as neonatal intrahepatic cholestasis caused by citrin deficiency (NICCD), in older children as failure to thrive and dyslipidemia caused by citrin deficiency (FTTDCD), and in adults as citrullinemia type 2 (CTLN2) with recurrent hyperammonemia and neuropsychiatric symptoms. We report a 35-day-old asymptomatic patient with citrin deficiency who had abnormal biochemical findings.

Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS1) deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive urea cycle disorder that causes hyperammonemic crisis. CPS1 is the first enzyme encoded by the CPS1 gene, which catalyzes the first step of the urea cycle. In CPS1 deficiency, ammonia, the toxic metabolite produced by the interruption of the urea cycle, is accumulated in the blood and brain, leading to hyperammonemic encephalopathy and irreversible brain damage. Here, we report a fatal case of neonatal-onset CPS1 deficiency in a 4-day-old girl presenting with recurrent seizures, who was revealed to be homozygous for c.1529delG ($p.Gly510Alafs^*5$).
Objective : The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between IgE-mediated atopic dermatitis and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) in Korean children. Method : This case-control study included 69 patients with atopic dermatitis and 42 normal students. Diagnoses of atopic dermatitis and assessments of its severity were made by the dermatologist. The MAST tests were administered to atopic dermatitis patients. The parents of all of the subjects completed the parent versions of the ADHD Rating Scale-IV(ARS). Results: Compared to the normal control group, the atopic dermatitis group scored significantly higher in the total, inattention, and hyperactivity/impulsivity profiles of the ARS(t=3.35, p<0.01 : t=6.41, p<0.01 ; t=3.93, p<0.01, respectively), The atopic dermatitis patients with ADHD hyperactivity/impulsivity subtype showed more severe symptoms of atopic dermatitis than those with ADHD inattentive subtype. The MAST-positive atopic dermatitis patients showed significantly increased incidence of ADHD symptoms than the MAST-negative counterparts. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest the possibility of an association between IgE-mediated atopic responsiveness and ADHD symptomatology.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) appears most in childhood and shows attention deficit, hyperactivity and impulsive activity. If these symptoms are left untreated, they consistently remain as difficulties throughout the childhood and in some cases they will last until adolescence and adulthood. Various researches on music therapy as well as psychological therapy and Korean classical music appreciation have currently been conducted. However, a variety of programs have introduced in the name of treatment but the improvement results through the application of programs and teaching methods, in reality, have hardly been a specific case. Thus, music educators as well as this researcher should make the efforts to form holistic characters and have interest in countless children with ADHD. Accordingly, this researcher, who has taught piano lessons, has performed a wide variety of convergence art teaching methods by applying methods of Dalcroze, Kodaly, and Orff to children with ADHD, misanthropy or lack of affection. As a result, symptoms have lessened and been treated for ADHD children with attention deficit. On the basis of this experience, there have appeared more educational effects by applying these to other children. This researcher is certain that this study will a foundation of music therapy education for children with each kind of syndrome.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the lifestyle factors influencing behavioral problems such as Inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and internet overuse in elementary and middle school students. Data from 889 elementary school students and 676 middle school students were used and teacher reporting on students' attention deficit and hyperactivity and impulsivity symptoms was also included in the analysis. Lifestyle included opportunities for family interaction, sleep, watching TV, playing Video games, eating breakfast, eating junk food, and private education. As a result of stepwise regression analysis, Video games, junk foods, and family interactions significantly predicted the inattention of elementary and middle school students. Video games, TV, junk foods, and family interactions significantly predicted elementary school students' hyperactivity and impulsivity, but the lifestyle variables hardly accounted for the hyperactivity/impulsivity of middle school students. Video game, and family interactions significantly predicted Internet overuse for both elementary and middle school students. Current study suggest that family interaction opportunities and the use of video games, TV and junk food should be considered to intervene in behavior problems.

Purpose : The genetic disturbance of galactosemia is expressed as a cellular deficiency of either galactose-1-phosphate uridyltransferase(GALT) or galactokinase(GALK) or UDP galactose 4-epimerase(GALE). To find-out the pattern of galactosemia in Korea, we retrospectively analyzed cases of galactosemia detected by neonatal screening program. Methods : We analyzed medical records of patients who visited Soonchunhyang University Hospital at age of 1 month after showing abnormalities in neonatal screening of galactosemia. For accurate diagnosis, galactose was measured by enzyme immunoassay(EIA) and fluorophotometer, also galactose-1-phosphate by fluorophotometer. Enzyme activities of GALK, GALT and GALE in RBC and galactose-1-phosphate were measured by radioisotope assay(RIA). Beutler test were done. Patients went on a lactose-free diet and follow-up tests for galactose, galactose-1-phosphate level and enzyme activity were performed. Results : 10 patients(male : 6, female : 4) were diagnosed as galactosemia. Two patients had GALK deficiency and two had GALT deficiency. Six were GALE deficient showing the largest number. In two patients with GALK deficiency, GALT and GALE activities were normal but GALK activities showed respectively reduced activity. For GALT deficiency, two patients had low GALT activity in RBC and showed genotype of Duarte 2/G(galactosemia) in DNA analysis. In one patient, GALT activity was normal. Three patients seemed to be heterozygote state of GALE deficiency according to GALE activity levels. Four patients showed GALK hyperactivity. Conclusion : GALE deficiency provided the highest number. After lactose-free diet, galactose and galactose-1-phosphate were normaly maintained. Neonatal screening on galactosemia is essential for preventing life-threatening symptoms and an accurate diagnosis is needed for finding out the type of galactosemia which is important for prognosis.
Background : Iron deficiency anemia(IDA) is a very common condition, and its underlying causes are diverse. Gastrointestinal blood loss, pregnancy, menorrhagia are known as common causes of IDA. However, especially in the IDA case of unknown origin, we must consider the culture specific cause of IDA as a possible cause of IDA. As I found an unusual cause of IDA related to a cultural behavior, I would like to report two cases of IDA occurred by negative therapy in Korea. It is possible to explain these cases by explanatory model. Case 1 : With a chief complaint of dyspnea, a 27-year-old woman visited our clinic. She had multiple treatment histories of negative therapy for her psoriasis. The blood loss during this procedure is the cause of present IDA. Case 2 : A 70-year-old man visited our clinic complaining of anorexia and dizziness. The history of treatment showed that he had an IDA 9 month ago. The IDA developed again because of repeated negative therapy after previous treatment of IDA. He has used the negative therapy intermittently to treat tinea pedis for 5 years. Conclusion : We must consider the negative therapy as a possible cause of IDA in Korea.
