  • 3-D Spectrograms for 22 events are drawn to discern about whether those are earthquakes or explosions. Generally, in case of explosions relative to the case of earthquakes, amplitude of P phase is more dominantly shown. According to the results on logarithm of spectral ratio of P (Pn, Pg)/Lg after removing free-surface effects from 3-D (U-D, N-S, E-W) seismogram, $-1.2{\sim}-0.9$ is shown for earthquakes and $-0.7{\sim}-0.1$ if shown for explosions. This result is consistent with previous researches (Kim Park, 1997) that -0.6 of spectral ratio between P and Lg after taking logarithm may be the criterion for the discrimination between earthquakes and explosions in Korea. In addition, Complexity is applied to two events as another discrimination method. The value of Complexity of explosion is much smaller than that of earthquake. This may be due to well-developed P-wave in explosion compared to that in earthquake. This result is in accordance with that of 3-D Spectrogram.

  • The purposes of this study are to examine a field test on heavy metal removal efficiency for AMD(Acid Mine Drainage) using fish bone and apatite, and to compare those results of the laboratory & the field tests. The duration of the field test was about one month and flow rates of AMD varied from 2.53 l/min to 12.8 l/min. From the result of the field test, removal efficiencies of apatite and those of fish bone are high for As, Fe, and Pb while those of fish born is higher than those of apatite far Al, Cd, Cu and Zn which are similar to the result of the previous laboratory test. In particular, average arsenic removal efficiency of apatite is higher$(84\%)$ than that of fish bone$(75\%)$ like the result of the previous laboratory test. In case of precipitates of phosphate compounds which are generated from chemical reaction between apatite/fish bone and AMD, those generated from apatite/AMD reactionform powder-shape while those created from fish bone/AMD reaction seem to be sludge. Therefore, apatite will be used as a precipitant for mine drainages having wide range of pH based on previous studies while fish bone will be applied as a precipitantfor AMD having lower PH and high concentration of heavy metals.

  • A quicker method was developed for foliar analysis in diagnosis of nitrogen in apple trees based on multivariate calibration procedure using partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principal component regression (PCR) to establish the relationship between reflectance spectra in the near infrared region and nitrogen content of fresh- and dry-leaf. Several spectral pre-processing methods such as smoothing, mean normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) and derivatives were used to improve the robustness and performance of the calibration models. Norris first derivative with a seven point segment and a gap of six points on MSC gave the best result of partial least squares-1 PLS-1) model for dry-leaf samples with root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) equal to $0.699g\;kg^{-1}$, and that the Savitzky-Golay first derivate with a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on MSC gave the best results of PLS-1 model for fresh-samples with RMSEP of $1.202g\;kg^{-1}$. The best PCR model was obtained with Savitzky-Golay first derivative using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on mean normalization for dry leaf samples with RMSEP of $0.553g\;kg^{-1}$, and obtained with the Savitzky-Golay first derivate using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial for fresh samples with RMSEP of $1.047g\;kg^{-1}$. The results indicate that nitrogen can be determined by the near infrared reflectance (NIR) technology for fresh- and dry-leaf of apple.

  • In Korea, food balance sheet and national nutrition survey have been conducted in parallel by Central Government for several decades. However, the gap between the two statistics became larger to reach an intolerable level in recent years, likely due to the limitation of dietary survey method in spite of the drastic change in dietary habits after industrialization and urbanization during last three decades. The currently available data from national nutrition survey was optimized by taking in to account of the food balance sheet. Adjusted consumption data for individual food items during the period of 1991-95 were given in tabular forms for groups of cereals potatoes sugars & sweets, legumes, nuts & seeds, fruits, vegetables, meats, eggs, dairy products oils & fats and fishery foods. Conversion factors of processed foods including wheat products, soybean products, Kimchi and dairy products into their raw materials were tentatively proposed. Great differences between supply data and intake data of food commodities were pointed out to be likely due to the seasonal variation and ignorance of processed foods and dining-out in the national nutrition survey. It is recommended to utilize these optimized food intake data as the nationally-representative one until new data from the national health and nutrition survey undertaken after modified procedures since 1998 are obtained and verified in future.

  • This article describes a simplified mathematical model and the relevant numerical algorithm to simulate the draped cloth on virtual human body. The proposed algorithm incorporates an elliptical, or non-consecutive, method to simulate the cloth wrinkles on moving bodies without resorting to the result of the past time-steps of drape simulation. A global-local analysis technique was employed to decompose the drape of cloths into the global deformation and the local wrinkles that will be superposed linearly The global deformation is determined directly by the rotation and the translation of body parts to generate a wrinkle-free yet globally deformed shape of cloth. The local wrinkles are calculated by solving simple elliptical equations based on the orthogonality between conjugate harmonic functions representing the wrinkle amplitude and the direction of wrinkles. The proposed method requires no interpolative time frames even for discontinuous body postures. Standing away from the incremental approach of time integration in conventional methods, the proposed method yields a remarkable reduction of CPU time and an enhanced stability. Also, the transient motion of cloth could be achieved by interpolating between the deformations corresponding to each static posture.

  • The steady state and decay characteristics of primary fluorescenece of phytoplanktons including Cyanophyceae and Cryptophyceae were investigated in vivo. At 580-640 nm region, fluorescence emission spectra were obtained from all algae examined. The observed fluorescence emission maxima were similiar$(\pm3\;nm)$ except Synechocorcus sp. (SYN). Considered $\lambda_{max}$ of emission spectra of phycobiliproteins and the excitation spectra with $\lambda_{max}=540-560nm$, it seems to be originated from biliproteins. Fluorescence lifetimes $(\tau)$ and decay curves were compared with standard solution of candidate organic compounds, b-phycoerythrin. The $\tau$ values obtained for phytoplankton with $\lambda_{max}=580nm$ were different depending upon the species of algae. The observed $\tau$ values were ranged from 1.39 ns to 1.95 ns. These are considerably shorter than $\tau(3.23\;us)$ for standard solution of b-phycoerythrin. The reduction of $\tau$ for phycoerythrin in vivo seems to be originated from effective energy transfer system between Chl. a and phycobiliprotein in intact cell. There are subtantial differences in fluorsecence spectra and lifetimes at the class level. At the species level, differences seems to be much smaller. The result of experiment suggests that measurement of fluorescence lifetimes may be helpful in the rapid characterization of algae. Direct application will likely be found in combination with the measurement of other luminescence parameters.

  • The groundwaters in the basin of Seomjin River are classified mainly into Na-Cl type with high EC and $NaHCO_3$ type with low EC, and are characterized by enriched $K^+,\;Mg^{2+},\; NO_3^-,\; and\;SO_4\;^{2-}$ contents. The epm fraction of $Na^+Cl^-$ in TDS increases in general with increasing EC of groundwater. The correlation patterns among dissolved ions indicate that $Na^+\;and\;Cl^-$ are derived mainly from intruded seawater, and $K^+,\;Mg^{2-},\;and\;SO_4\;^{2-}$ from anthropogenic source such as a chemical fertilizer. The groundwaters that exceed the recommended limits far agricultural irrigation water contains $23\%\;of\;Cl^-$ reflecting sea-water intrusion, but $50\%\;of\;NO_3^-$ as an anthropogenic pollution, among the wells investigated. In risk assessment of groundwaters by the EC-SAR relationship, only $40\%$ of the groundwaters shows the suitable quality for agricultural irrigation water without any sodium and salinity hazards. Consequently, the pollution sources that cause degradation of groundwater quality in the basin of Seomjin River are the usage of chemical fertilizers and the intrusion of seawater, resulted primarily from the extension of riverward backflow of seawater and secondarily from the overpumping of groundwater.

  • The aim of this report is to compare quantitatively computed radiography (CR) and screen-film radiography (SFR) in the detection of peritoneal effusion in dogs. Normal four beagle dogs and one Maltese dog were used. Each five CR and SFR abdominal images of right lateral and ventro-dorsal position were obtained after lodge of 6 ml, 8 ml, 12 ml, 15 ml, and 18 ml of normal saline by intraperitoneal injection within the abdomen. The reviewers were asked to evaluate each SFR and CR images for the presence of peritoneal effusion using the score by the presence of a peritoneal effusion on a five-point ordinal scale. A receiver operating curve (ROC) analysis compared the two imaging modalities. The present study showed that there was no statistical difference between SFR and CR in the detecting peritoneal effusion, but CR was relatively more sensitive based on the increased area under its ROC analysis. Moreover, Readers were more likely to detect peritoneal effusion on CR images than SFR.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop korean traditional gruel 'Hodojook' as a easy-to cook product by modifying cooking method and its concentrations. Physical and sensory properties of 'Hodojook' with various levels of concentration were investigated using viskograph and sensory evaluation panel. The result showed that hydrated rice flour has higher maximum viscosity than instantly ground rice. Addition of walnut lowered maximum viscosity and gelatinization beginning temperature. But gelatinization pattern was not affected by the level of walnut and modified cooking method. Sensory characteristics on the roasted odor, roasted taste, oily odor, oily taste and viscosity were significantly increased as the walnut levels are increased. 'Hodojook' of' with the 1:1:6 ratio (rice flour walnut : water) was recommended.
