  • As one of various cultural heritages created by humanity, traditional architectures are an archival heritage and cultural heritage reflecting social trends and historical facts. These traditional architectures show various features depending on characteristics by local areas and climatic conditions. They can be expressed in diverse formats such as a picture, a floor plan, and a book. For managing and retrieving traditional architecture records, it is necessary to develop metadata schema based on the FRBR model. Accordingly, this study analyzes the current situation and the problem of domestic and foreign metadata schema related to cultural heritage, and proposes the FRBR-based metadata schema for managing the traditional architecture.

  • Pulse-like ground motion can cause greater damage to structures than nonpulse-like ground motion. Currently, much research is being conducted to determine the presence or absence of velocity pulses and to quantify them from seismic-acceleration records. Existing ground motion is divided into far-field (FF) and near-fault ground motion, based on the distance of the measurement point from the fault. Near-fault ground motion is further classified into near-fault pulse-like (NFP) and near-fault nonpulse-like (NFNP) ground motion by quantifying the presence or absence of velocity pulses. For each ground motion group, 40 FF, 40 NFP, and 40 NFNP ground motions are selected; thus, 120 ground motions are used in the seismic analysis to assess the seismic fragility of sample bridges. Probabilistic seismic demand models (PSDMs) are created by evaluating the seismic responses of two types of sample bridges with lead-rubber and elastomeric rubber bearings using three groups of ground motions. Seismic fragility analysis is performed using the PSDM, and from these results, the effect of the presence or absence of seismic velocity pulses on the seismic fragility is evaluated. From the comparison results of the seismic fragility curve, the seismic fragility of NFP ground motion appears to be approximately three to five times greater than that of NFNP ground motion, according to the presence or absence of a velocity pulse of seismic waves. This means that the damage to the bridge is greater in the case of NFP ground motion than that in the case of NFNP ground motion.

  • In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on the nonlinear response characteristics of structures. The characteristics of soil and the locality of the site where those ground motions were recorded affect on the contents of earthquake waves. Therefore, it is difficult to select appropriate input ground motions for seismic response analysis. This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wave compatible with seismic design spectrum, and also evaluates the seismic response values of multistory reinforced concrete structures by the simulated earthquake motions. The artificial earthquake wave are generated according to the previously recorded earthquake waves in past major earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wave, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% critical viscous damping. The input ground motions applied to this study have identical elastic acceleration response spectra, but have different phase angles. The purpose of this study is to investigate their validity as input ground motion for nonlinear seismic response analysis. As expected, the response quantifies by simulated earthquake waves present better stable than those by real recording of ground motion. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves generated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures. It was also found that strength of input ground motions for seismic analysis are suitable to be normalize as elastic acceleration spectra.

  • Onyanghaenggung Palace(temporary palace at Onyang) is an important cultural heritage that can substantially confirm the king's onhaeng(溫行) base on literature records such as <Ongungyeonggoedae(溫宮靈槐臺)>, <Oncheonhaenggungdo(溫泉行宮圖)> of 『Ongungsasil(溫宮事實)』『, Younggoedaegi(靈槐臺記)』and cultural property such as Yeonggoedae(靈槐臺) and Shinjeong Monument(神井碑). As the Onyang Tourist Hotel is located in the presumed site of the Onyanghaenggung Palace, even the identity of the Onyanghaenggung Palace site is being threatened without restoration efforts. The purpose of this study is to estimate the location of Onyanghaenggung Palace based on <Oncheonhaenggungdo> before the damages during the Japanese colonial period. To achieve these purposes, records related to Onhaeng during successive kings' terms in the Joseon Dynasty are first reviewed, before changes in the architecture of Onyanghaenggung Palace that took place in the Joseon Dynasty and damage suffered during the Japanese colonial period are summarized, and finally <Oncheonhaenggungdo>, <Eupji>, <Ancient Maps>, <Jijeokwondo> are reviewed. Based on these processes, the location of Onyanghaenggung Palace is estimated by comparing the current Onyang Tourist Hotel and the surrounding area. The results of this study are as follows. First, if the 1,758 cheok(尺) of 「Onyanggun eupji」 and 「Hoseo eupji」 are converted in Jucheok(周尺), the scope of Onyanghaenggung Palace is close to the inner circumference of the site(垈) in Jijeokwondo(1914). Second, the streamlet leading to Oncheoncheon(溫泉川) from the southern side of Onyanggwan(溫陽館), the hot spring hole in use of <Distribution Map of Hot Spring(溫泉分布見取圖)>(1925, 1928), and considering the relationship of the inner east gate(內東門), Bigak(碑閣), Sinjeong(神井) of <Oncheonhaenggungdo>, the building of Hermann Gustav Theodor Sander and the Copyright Commission's Onyang Hot Springs photograph can be estimated as the Onyanghaenggung Palace Hot-spring, namely Tangsil(湯室). Third, in the process of developing to amusement park, the transfer and relocation of the Yeonggaedae site(a governmentowned property) was requested by Gyeongnam Railway Company, but Chungcheongnam-do denied transfer and relocation of the Yeonggaedae because of the importance in the history of Onyang Hot Springs, so the government-owned Yeonggaedae Monument site were permanently preserved at the current location together with the hoe tree(Sophora japonica L.). Also, Yeonggoedae in <Tourists Attractions around Gyeongnam Railway in Joseon (朝鮮京南鐵道沿線名所交通図絵)> (1929) is shown to exist in its current location, and it can be seen that the Shinjeong Monument Pavilion was moved to the front of Shinjeonggwan (神井館). Based on the circumference of Onyanghaenggung Palace, the location of Onyanghaenggung Palace Hot Spring (Tangsil) and Yeonggaedae Monument Pavilion, changes in roads and lots of land during the Japanese colonial period and the modern period, as well as the location of Onyanghaenggung Palace and other major buildings, can be estimated to extend to the current Shimin-ro and Onyang Hot Spring Market.

  • The shape of the roof is very important, as it determines the beauty of the exterior of Korean wooden architecture. In particular, the curve of the eaves is the most representative of the characteristics of Korean wooden architecture. Rafters and buyeon (浮椽), flying rafters, create curves for the eaves, and buyeon in particular makes the roof lighter and more dynamic. Although the function and role of buyeon are already known, nothing is yet clear about the beginning of its use in Korean ancient architecture. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine when buyeon was first used in Korean architecture. To this end, I examined various records, buildings, remains, and artifacts that have architectural shapes in Korea, China, and Japan. The results are summarized as follows. First, the use of buyeon in China appears during the Northern Qi Dynasty (北齊) in the mid-6th century, but became common in the 7th century during the Tang (唐) Dynasty. Second, the use buyeon in Japan appears in the mid-8th century, when the capital was relocated from Asuka (飛鳥) to Nara (奈良). It corresponds with the time that Japan began importing Chinese culture directly. Third, the use of buyeon in Korea may have been introduced to Baekje from China in the mid-6th century, but it was not common. It is believed that it became common after active exchanges with the Tang Dynasty during the Unified Silla Period in the mid-7th century.

  • This study is initiated after discovering that Minsu, a man about 600 years ago, mentioned a new architectural type called 'Pan-ock' in a record he left when he was punished for slavery at Jeju. Although there are no additional records or architectural remains, the following two hypotheses were made regarding the existential possibility of Pan-ock. First, Pan-ock was originated from materials obtained from ships. Second, it was related to the Pan-ock-seon. The hypotheses are based on the premise that large wooden ships such as trade ships were being actively built, as it was 160 years before Chullyuk Geumjiryeon of king Injo was banned, and the woodworking skills were considerable. Another hypothesis is also established by comparing the records of Pan-ock with other records of the same period and inferring the relationship of related events. This study can serve as a basis for explaining the diversity of our architecture to overcome that most of the architecture have been lost compared to Korea's splendid history. Therefore, a sequent study intends to compare the hypotheses proposed after this study with the architecture in the coastal and island regions of the Korean Peninsula, in order to find and verify the authentic cases of Pan-ock in Korea and East Asia.

The seismic response analysis is performed to examine the nonlinear response characteristics of SDOF system subjected to the simulated earthquake waves. It was concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper are applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

  • Lime-soil consolidations are very important as structural material, bonding material, waterproofing material, and finishing material in korea traditional buildings. In this study, we investigated site application trouble in korea traditional buildings being repaired or restored, and propose following solutions. 1) To diminish quality variation occurred by slaking quick-lime in site, it is desirable to use slaked-lime for lime-soil consolidation. 2) For uniform construction of lime-soil consolidation, we would recommend builders to use mixer to be uniform mixture, premixed type materials and compacting machine in field, 3) and to use rigid suitable temporary construction as scaffold for preventing traditional buildings from additional damage occurred in demolition and construction of a layer of lime-soil consolidation of a roofing. 4) For suitable repair of traditional buildings, it is necessary to specify definitely materials and construction methods suggested by the standard specifications for repair of the cultural property.
