  • For economic and technical reasons, it is difficult to obtain high quality undisturbed cohesionless samples, hence most researchers rely on preparing remolded and reconstituted representative samples of sandy soils. In this study, moist tamping, air pluviation, and dry deposition methods were applied to make remolded samples at similar relative densities. A series of isotropically consolidated drained tests were conducted with accompanied by measured elastic wave velocities in order to evaluate a difference between sample preparation methods and relative densities. For the elastic wave velocity measurements, piezoelectric elements were installed on the top and bottom cap of the triaxial device. The results showed that soil behavior relies on sample preparation methods, and that the trend of shear wave velocity was the same with volumetric strain behavior.

  • In studying unsaturated soil mechanics, determination of soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation though not easy, is an essential factor. In this research a new testing apparatus was developed to determine soil water characteristic curve and permeability equation. A test to get saturated permeability coefficients and soil water characteristic curves for two soils was performed by using the developed testing apparatus. First, a saturated permeability test was performed and then the test to get soil water characteristic curve of a drying process was performed. Next, the test to get soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process was performed. Test results showed hysteresis phenomena between soil water characteristic curve of a drying process and soil water characteristic curve of a wetting process. The permeability equations were determined by a theoretical method where a saturated permeability coefficient and a soil water characteristic curve were used.

  • The matric suction and volumetric water content of dredging soils obtained from Saemangeum area were measured by the automated Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) apparatus under both drying and wetting conditions. Based on the test result, SWCCs of the dredging soils were estimated by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The matric suction of drying process is larger than that of wetting process at a same effective degree of saturation. The suction stresses for various matirc suctions were estimated using Lu and Likos(2006) model and the Suction Stress Characteristic Curves (SSCC) were predicted using the independent parameter of SWCC. The suction stress of drying path was increased and decreased, while the suction stress of wetting path was continuously decreased with increasing the effective degree. Also, the suction stress of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same effective degree of saturation. The Hydraulic Conductivity Function(HCF) was also predicted by the van Genuchten(1980) model. The hydraulic conductivity was increased with increasing the volumetric water content. The hydraulic conductivity of drying path is larger than that of wetting path at a same matric suction. According to the results of SWCCs and SSCCs, the hysteresis phenomenon of suction stress or matric suction during both drying and wetting paths was occurred. The main reason of hysteresis phenomenon is a ink bottle effect of water among soil particles.

  • In order to studies proper conservation treatment condition of waterlogged archaeological wood excavated from wetland in Shinchang-dong, Kwangju, 2 kinds of wooden objects were treated with PEG(Poly-Ethylene Glycol), sucrose and lactitol and their size stability and relative humidity were analyzed and compared each other. The result showed that Quercus spp. had the highest size stability in 2 Step-PEG treatment using PEG#200(MW:200) and PEG#4000 (MW:3,350) and Acer spp. was the highest in treatment using only PEG#4000. In relative humidity test after treatment 2 Step-PEG treatment showed the lowest size stability. In the meantime, sucrose and lactitol-treated sample was fast for penetration, sucrose-treated sample showed a sharp increase for penetration in as high as 84% humidity condition and medicine flew out a lot and lactitol-treated sample got enlarged with fine cracking(splitting) in relative humidity test. In relative humidity test, the samples showed cracking(splitting) in all treatment materials except for 2 Step-PEG treatment. This study showed that waterlogged archaeological wood excavated from Shinchang-dong had the highest size stability and highest adaptation to humidity change in case of treatment with 2 Step-PEG.

  • In order to obtain the prediction of the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content of soil without soil moisture test, compaction test results from 157 different places either under construction or already completed were analyzed. The analyzed results were as follow The relationship between the maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content of the soil showing a correlation coefficient of 0.96 indicated that there was a high correlation between them. From the above relationship we obtained the equation, ${\gamma}_{dmax.}={\frac{1}{0.4193+0.00937W_{opt.}}$ Equation between the optimum moisture content and the maximum wet density of the soil was $W_{opt.}={\frac{0.4193{\gamma}_{tmax.}}{0.937_{\gamma}_{tmax.}-0.01}$, and the values of the optimum moisture content being predicted with the maximum wet density of the soil showed a little difference between those and tested values. The values of the maximum dry density being predicted with the moisture content estimated by the maximum wet density of the soil were within the range of ${\pm}5%$ of its tested values. The relationship between the dry density and the void ratio showed a high correlation between them (${\gamma}=0.9706$). From the above relationship, we obtained the equation, ${\gamma}_{dmax.}={\frac{1}{0.3938+0.3426e}}$.

  • Soil-water characteristic curves (SWCCs), which represent a physical property in partially saturated soils, show the relation between volumetric water content and matric suction. The SWCCs exhibit hysteresis during wetting and drying, however experimental expressions used to describe SWCCs have generally ignored the hysteresis. In addition, the shape of SWCC may depend on the void ratio which is changed by soil skeleton deformations or hysteretic behavior under various loading conditions. Hence, it is necessary to understand, both empirically and analytically, the relationship between soil skeleton deformations and the SWCCs of various soils. The typical SWCCs experimentally have drying, wetting, and the second drying curve. The measurement of a complete set of hysteretic curves is severely time-consuming and difficult works, then the first drying curve of SWCC is generally determined to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and shear strength function of partially saturated soils. This paper presents the hydraulic-mechanical behavior of partially saturated soils (weathered soil and silty soil) for volume changes and hysteresis in SWCCs regarding the difference between the first drying and wetting curve.

  • This research investigates the moisture and aging effects of wastepaper fiber-cement composites. Wastepaper fibers is obtained by a dry process. Wastepaper fiber-cement composites was manufactured by the hatscheck process. The effects of moisture and aging on the performance of wastepaper fiber-cement composites were investigated through accelerated laboratory tests simulating the effects of moisture sensitivity and wet-dry cycles as well as freeze-thaw cycles and long-term drying. They were shown to possess acceptable moisture and aging performance compared with virgin fiber cement composites.

  • The liquefaction potential of saturated sands under seismic loading conditions has been carefully considered by many investigations. Typical of these investigations is the laboratory determination of cyclic strength of sands by means of cyclic triaxial tests. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the method of sample preparation on the liquefaction characteristics of remolded samples of saturated uniform sands. Cyclic triaxial tests were performed on saturated uniform sand compacted to the same density by 3 different procedures of pluvial compaction through air, pluvial compaction through water and vibratory compaction. It was validated that the cyclic stress ratio of remolded saturated uniform sands by different compaction procedures at the same density was very different.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the volumetric water content of unsaturated soils during drying and wetting process by using volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) incorporated with time domain reflectometry (TDR). The VPPE consists of a pressure cell, a pressure regulator, a burette system and a TDR probe. Two samples with different initial void ratios were prepared in the pressure cell, and the air pressure at the range of 0.1 kPa - 50 kPa was applied to adjust the matric suction by the pressure regulator. The burette system was used to measure the volumetric water content change of the sample according to the matric suction. In addition, the TDR probe, installed in the cell, was used to evaluate the dielectric constant from the reflected signal of the electromagnetic wave at the probe. The volumetric water content of specimen was estimated by the empirical equation between the volumetric water content and dielectric constant, which was calibrated with the Jumunjin sand. The test results show that the volumetric water content calculated by TDR probe is strongly correlated to the measured value by burette system. The hysteresis occurs during drying and wetting process. Furthermore, the degree of hysteresis reduces in the repeated process. This study suggests that TDR may be effectively used to evaluate the water content soil for the determination of water characteristic curve of unsaturated soils.

  • A need still exists to evaluate the durability performance of cemented gedmaterials in road constructions using various cementing binders due to seasonal changes in fields as well as structural performance. In this paper, durability characteristics of stabilized granular base and subgrade materials, which is widely used in korea, was assessed using a laboratory repeated load resilient-deformation test under various freezing-thawing and wet-drying cyclic conditions. In addition, various resilient modulus models were adopted based on the test results. As a result, the estimated model coefficients agree well with the values from the literatures.
