  • The purpose of this study was to examine the association between metabolic syndrome and its components and health-related quality of life in Korean adults. Metabolic syndrome defined in accordance with NCEP-ATP III, and HRQOL was evaluated using EQ-5D. Data on 16,657 adult, extracted from Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys in 2016-2018, were analyzed and showed that 34.3% of subjects were metabolic syndrome, with males higher than females. The average score of HRQOL was 96.7 for men and 94.5 for women. Multiple logistic regression analysis was results, The OR of impaired HRQOL in women who metabolic syndrome was 1.27(95% CI: 1.09-1.46) compared to who women without metabolic syndrome. Among the components of metabolic syndrome, abdominal obesity (OR=1.72, 95% CI: 1.50-1.97) and high blood pressure (OR=1.26, 95% CI: 1.06-1.50) were associated to impaired HRQOL. But, there were no significant in men. In conclusion, In order to improve women's HRQOL, it suggests that an approach strategy is necessary to reduce the risk factors of metabolic syndrome, which take into account women's characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between quality of life and demographic characteristics and health-related behavioral characteristics, and their relevance to variables that represent health conditions among metropolitan-dwelling older adults. The study subjects were 380 senior citizens aged 65 or older living in the D metropolitan area, and data collection was conducted by visiting them for interviews in June 2019. A binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the relationship between independent variables (demographic characteristics, health-related behavioral characteristics, health condition variables) and the dependent variable (quality of life) while controlling for gender and age. As a result, the factors related to quality of life for those surveyed were education level, spousal status, living status, bear for living expenses, average monthly allowance, satisfaction with daily life, evaluation of sleep quality, smoking and eating habits, amount of regular exercise, hobbies, subjective health status, physical disability (if any), hearing ability, visual acuity, mastication ability, urinary incontinence (present or not), and amnesia. The above results suggest that quality of life for the elderly living in urban areas is significantly related to variables that indicate demographic characteristics, health-related behavioral characteristics, and health condition.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare relationship among pulmonary function, dyspnea, and health-related quality of life in patients with COPD. The instruments were used FEV1(%), the Baseline Dyspnea Index(BDI), the Medical Research Council Scale(MRCS), and the St. George's respiratory questionnaire(SGRQ). Dyspnea of patients with moderate and severe stage were deeper than one of patients with mild stage(BDI F=5.452, p=.007; MRCS F=4.925, p=.011). And health-related quality of life of patients with severe stage were poorer than one of patients with mild stage(F=3.778, p=.030). There were significant, but weak, correlations between scores of the BDI(r=.471), the MRCS(r=-.403), the SGRQ(r=-.476) and FEV1. There were strong correlations between scores of the BDI(r=-.752), the MRCS(r=.645) and the SGRQ. And FEV1 didn't correlated with the BDI, the MRCS, and the SGRQ scores in patient of moderate stage and severe stage. But there were also strong correlations between the BDI(r=-.719), the MRCS(r=.607) and the SGRQ in patient of moderate stage and severe stage. Specially, correlation between the BDI and the SGRQ were higher than one between the MRCS and the SGRQ. In conclusion, Using the BDI for evaluation of the subjective dyspnea with objective pulmonary functional test in patients with COPD, it will able to grasp the health-related quality of life.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate social networks, loneliness, and sleep quality related to health-related quality of life in older adults living alone. Data were collected from 111 community-dwelling elderly. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regressions with IBM SPSS 26.0 program. In multiple regression analysis, physical component summary (PCS) was predicted by the level of education (β=.20, p=.020), social networks (β=.31, p=.012), and sleep quality (β=-.23, p=.011). The model including these variables accounted for 25.7% of the variance in the PCS. Mental component summary (MCS) was predicted by loneliness (β=-.37, p=.004). Loneliness accounted for 31.7% of the variance in the MCS. In order to enhance the health-related quality of life of the older adults living alone, the intervention program to resolve social isolation should be provided for them.

  • This study aims to discover the relations between physical activities of the elderly and their health-related quality of life. For the study, it targeted 720 of the 778 elderly persons whose ages were above 65 for a final analysis except 58 whose physical activities and health-related quality of life could not be evaluated from the data of the first year of the 4th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES IV-1), 2007. As a result, it was discovered that there were significant differences in the elderly's health-related quality of life according to age, education, sleeping hours, stress, the number of chronic diseases and subjective awareness of health. In particular, there were significant differences in their health-related quality of life between the group with high physical activity level and the group with low physical activity level. Based on the results above, it is suggested that the persons with higher performance ability of physical activities can have higher quality of living along with increase of energy and further studies dealing with more factors, ranges and periods are needed.
