Effects of Vase Materials and Floral Preservative on Flower Color and Diameter in Cut Rose and Gerbera (화병 재료와 절화보존제 처리가 절화 장미와 거베라의 화색, 엽색 화경에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vase material and floral preservative treatment over time on flower color, leaf color and flower size of cut flowers Rosa hybrida 'Aqua' and 'Corvernet', and Gerbera jamesonii 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' stuck in a glass, porcelain, or onggi (pottery with a dark bronze glaze) vase containing either tap water or a floral preservative solution. The ${\Delta}E$ values in flower color of 'Aqua' rose at 8 days after treatment with a floral preservative in onggi and porcelain vases were low. The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Covernet' rose treated with floral preservative in an onggi vase was the lowest and L value was the closest to that of petals of cut flowers at just before treatment (control). The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Honeymoon' gerbera treated with a floral preservative in an onggi vase was the lowest and a value of 58.81 and b value of 34.29 were the closest to that of the control group as color of cut flowers in an onggi vase was similar to the color at the beginning of treatment. The ${\Delta}E$ value of 'Golden Time' gerbera treated in an onggi vase was significantly lower than that in a porcelain or glass vase and a value of -7.81 treated with a floral preservative solution in an onggi vase was the closest to the control and b value was high in an onggi vase as well. The L, a, and b values in leaf color of roses were similar to each value of the control and ${\Delta}E$ value of 3.25 measured in an onggi vase was lower than that in a porcelain or glass vase. Flower diameter of 'Covernet' and 'Golden Time' roses treated with a floral preservative in an onggi vase was greater than that in other treatments. From these results, the floral preservative applied to a holding solution is assumed to improve the quality and freshness of cut roses and gerberas by inhibiting microbes propagation and by promoting uptake of water and nutrients. The onggi vase with fine pores will promote the expression and maintenance of flower and leaf colors and may increase flower diameter by high air permeability.

Damaged Aspects, Seasonal Fluctuations, and Attractivity of Various Colors on Liriomyza trifolii Burgess (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Gerbera (거베라에서 아메리카잎굴파리의 가해양상, 발생소장 및 색상별 유인량)

  • The rate of gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii Bolus.) leaf damaged by Liriomyza trifolii larvae was lower than that by adults. The adults began to be attracted to yellow sticky trap immediately after transplanting and increased gradually up to early August followed by low population density from middle to late August. In the second year, adults began to be attracted from late April after transplanting and increased abrubtly from middle May and the high density was maintained till early truly. The density decreased, however, from middle July, and then followed by the high density again early September and late October The seasonal fluctuations of larva and pupa were similar to that of adults and the peaks of pupa occurred one week later than that of larvae. Larva infected by parasitoid were observed 4 weeks after transplanting. Parasitism was 65% in average from early July to late August but decreased to 50% from early September. Number of trapped adults was the highest in the yellow sticky trap among the five different colour raps. Catches at 30~60 cm above soil surface were significantly greater than that at 90 cm.

Effects of Earthenware Vase on Vase Life of Cut Gerbera Flowers and Microbial Multiplication (옹기 화병이 절화 거베라의 수명 및 미생물 증식에 미치는 영향)

  • To examine the availability of onggi (earthenware) as a floral vase, we compared the vase life of cut gerberas (Gerbera jamesonii) with generally used vases made of glass and porcelain. After holding cut gerbera 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' in vases made of glass, porcelain, and onggi containing holding solution (tap water or preservative solution), vase life, fresh weight, and water uptake of cut flowers, and total number of microbes in holding solution were collected. In onggi vase, vase life of both the cultivars was longer than the other vases and floral preservative prolonged vase life compared with tap water. Cut gerberas applied with preservative solution in onggi vase maintained their ornamental value for more than 14 days. Cumulative water uptake by cut gerberas was greatest in onggi vase, where 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' absorbed water by 19.2 and 15.8 mL, respectively, for 10 days. Fresh weight of cut flowers in onggi vase was greater than those of the others, and the preservative solution delayed the reduction of fresh weight compared with tap water. Especially, onggi vase with preservative solution maintained 89% of the initial fresh weight at the 8th day of the treatments due to smooth water uptake with comparison with 71% in porcelain. Total number of microbes in the holding solution was smallest in onggi vase. At the 8th day, microbes number in onggi vase was 435 cfu/mL, that was 20-30% level of those of glass and porcelain vases. In conclusion, onggi vase inhibited microbial proliferation in holding solution, maintained water uptake by cut flower, and delayed bending of flower stalks due to vascular blockage, and then prolonged vase life in gerbera. Therefore, onggi with numerous micropores will be a good material for flower vase and preservative solution can improve its function.

Diel Flight Activity of Liriomyza trifolii(Burgess) and Heights of Yello Sticky Traps in Gerbera (거베라에서 아메리카잎굴파리의 일주활동과 황색 끈끈이트랩 높이별 부착수 비교)

  • Spatial activities of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) were investigated weekly using yellow sticky trap which were placed at three different height and monitored during four time periods. Yellow sticky trap placed at plant height caught significantly more L. trifolii (Burgess) than did traps placed at 30 and 60cm above plant height. Diel activities of L. trifolii (Burgess) were monitored with yellow sticky traps at 1- and 2-h intervals during three time periods. Leafminer flight activity in May, July and October peaked from 1400 to 1800 hours, 0800 hours and from 1200 to 1400 hours, respectively. 2nd peak of flight activity only occurred in May. Attraction of L. trifolii (Burgess) for yellow sticky traps was affected by temperature as well as solar intensity. Male of L. trifolii (Burgess) appeared more responsive to yellow sticky traps than female regardless of trap height or time of day.

Effect of the Composition of Nutrient Solution on the Growth and Flowering of Gerbera (양액(養液)의 조성(組成)이 거베라의 생육(生育) 및 개화(開花)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This study was conducted to establish the optimal ratio of $NO_3^-$ and $NH_4^+$ for the nutrient culture of Gerbera hybrida Hort. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The growth of 'Volga' was best in 8 : 2($NO_3^-$ : $NH_4^+$) solution, while that of 'Mirage' was in 9 : 1 ratio. 2. The maximum quantity of cut flowers could be harvested in the 8 : 2 solution in 'Volga', whereas in 9: 1 solution in 'Mirage', but the differences between 9 : 1 and 8 : 2 were not significantly great. 3. In 'Volga', the qualities of cut flowers were not different among 10 : 0, 9 : 1 and 8 : 2, while those in 'Mirage' were not different among all treatments. 4. It turned out that the optimum ratio of $NO_3^-$ and $NH_4^+$ for the nutrient culture of gerbera in the farm house was 8 : 2, irrespective of cultivas.

Breeding of a New Bright Yellow Gerbera 'Sunmyo' with High Yield for Cut Flower (황색 절화용 다수성 거베라 신품종 '선묘' 육성)

  • A new bright yellow gerbera (Gerbera hybrida Hort.), 'Sunmyo' was bred from a cross between red medium-gerbera 'Beauty' and yellow gerbera 'Tamara' in 2001. Characteristics trials were conducted three times from 2004 to 2006. Bred cultivar 'Sunmyo' showed bright yellow color (YG12B), black center, semi-double type, and middle size flower with stable flower shape. The average yield of 'Sunmyo' increased up to 37% (70.0 stems per year) as compared to control cultivar 'Biro' (51.0 stems per year). The vase life is 7.5 days. The survival rate is 85.0%, and days to first flowering are 95 in the plastic house passing the winter season.

Relationship between Discoloration and Flower Pigment after Pressing in Yellow-Colored Flowers (황색 꽃의 압화 후 변색과 화색소와의 관련성)

  • This study was conducted to find out the cause of discoloration after pressing yellow-colored flowers. Plant materials used were Lilium Asiatic Hybrids, Oncidium spp., Rosa hybrida, $Tulipa{\times}gesneriana$, Antirrhinum majus, Dianthus caryophyllus, Freesia hybrida, Zantedeschia elliottiana, Gerbera jamesonii, Helianthus annuus, and Ranunculus asiaticus. Thickness, ratio of length to width, and water content of petals did not considerably affect discoloration of pressed flowers. Expression of yellow color in petals was caused by carotenoids in Lilium Asiatic Hybrids, Oncidium spp., Rosa hybrida and $Tulipa{\times}gesneriana$, by flavonoids in Antirrhinum majus, Dianthus caryophyllus, Freesia hybrida and Zantedeschia elliottiana, and by coexistence of carotenoids and flavonoids in Gerbera jamesonii, Helianthus annuus and Ranunculus asiaticus. Carotenoids that expressed yellow color in petals affected significantly on discoloration in pressed flowers containing carotenoids alone or both carotenoids and flavonoids. However, discoloration was hardly ever found in yellow-colored species as affected by flavonoids. Dark treatment was effective for almost perfect preservation in color of pressed flowers, while light treatment resulted in severe discoloration.

A New Standard Gerbera Cultivar 'Paspin' with Pastel Pink and Semi-double for Cut Flower (대륜계통의 파스텔톤 분홍색 반겹꽃 절화용 거베라 신품종 'Paspin')

  • A new gerbera cultivar 'Paspin' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2009. A cross was made between 'Lilabella' and 'Mephisto' with purple and semi-double in 2005. After investigation of the characteristics for five years (from 2005 to 2009), it was selected specially as a cut flower. The 'Paspin' cultivar has a pastel pink flower color (RHS R52B) with green disc center and semi-double flower. It has large-sized flowers which average flower diameter is about 12.8 cm. And inner ray floret and disc diameters are 7.87 cm and 2.57 cm, respectively. It has an adequate peduncle height of 48.6 cm, and a longer vase life of 10.8 days. It is vigorous in growth and also adaptable to the local cultural environments of Korea. It is expected that if the 'Paspin' cultivar will be planted, the royalty fees to be paid to other countries can be saved. And the local growers will also be benefitted since the cost of cultivars will be lower than the imported ones.
