  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the maximum energy dissipation and the ductility capacity of shear-dominated steel plate walls with thin web plates. Three specimens of three-story plate walls with thin web plates were tested. The parameters for the test specimens were the aspect ratio of the web plate and the shear strength of the column. A concentrically braced frame and a moment-resisting frme were a also tested for comparison. The steel plate walls exhibited much better ductility and energy dissipation capacity than the concentrically braced frame and the moment-resisting frame. The results showed that unlike other structural systems, the sh as well as strength, and can therefore be used as an effective earthquake-resisting system. A method of predicting the energy dissipation capacity of a steel plate wall was proposed.

  • Structures are designed against earthquakes and reinforced concrete shear walls or steel bracings are usually used as aseismic resistant element. However their hysteretic characteristics in plastic region ductility and capacity of energy absorption are not always good. Besides their stiffness is so rigid that structure designed by static analysis is occasionally disadvantageous. when dynamically analized. Generally a steel plate subjected to shear force has a good deformation capacity Also it has been considered to retain comparative shear strength and stiffness Steel shear wall can be used as lateral load resistant element for seismic design. However there was little knowledge concerning shear force-deformation characteristics of steel plates up to their collapse state In this study a series of shear loading tests of steel plate collapse state. In this study a series of shear loading tests of steel plate surrounded by vertical and horizontal ribs were conducted with the parameters of D/H ratios rib type and the loading patterns. The test result is discussed and analyzed to obtain several restoring characteristics. that is shear force-deformation stiffness and yield strength etc.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the cyclic behavior of the reinforced concrete frame with infilled steel plate. For this purpose, three-story compositewalls using infilled steel plates (RCSPW) were tested. The parameters for this test were the reinforcement ratio of the column and opening in the infilled steel plate. A reinforced concrete infilled wall (RCIW) and a reinforced concrete frame (RCF) were also tested for comparison. The deformation capacity of the RCSPW specimen was significantly greater than that of the RCIW specimen, although the two specimens exhibited the same load-carrying capacity. Like the steel plate walls with the steel boundary frame, RCSPW specimens showed excellent strength, deformation capacity, and energy dissipation capacity. Furthermore, by using infilled steel plates, shear cracking and failure of the column-beam joint were prevented. By using a strip model, the stiffness and strength of the RCSPW specimens were predicted. The results were compared with the test results.

  • The effects of earthquakes can be devastating especially to existing structures that are not based on earthquake resistant design. This study proposes a steel grid shear wall that can provide a sufficient lateral resistance and can be used as a seismic retrofit method. The pushover analysis was performed on RC structure with and without the proposed steel grid shear wall. Obtain the performance point that the target structure for seismic loads applied to evaluate the response and performance levels. The capacity spectrum at performance point is nearly elastic range, so satisfied the performance objectives(LS level). And response modification factor(R factor) were calculated from the pushover analysis. The R factor approach is currently implemented to reflect inelastic ductile behavior of the structures and to reduce elastic spectral demands from earthquakes to the design level. The R factor increases from 2.17 to 3.25 was higher than the design criteria. As a result, according to reinforcement by steel grid shear wall, strength, stiffness, and ductility of the low-rise RC structure has been appropriately improved.

  • Research on steel plate concrete (SC) structures for the modularization of nuclear power plants have been performed recently in Korea. In this study, the seismic capacity and stiffness characteristics of unstiffened SC shear walls under the effects of earthquakes were investigated through static pushover tests. Failure modes, sectional strength, and stiffness characteristics of SC structures under lateral loads were inspected by analyzing the experimental results. The strengths obtained by the experiments were also compared with those derived by the design code of the SC structures. One of the main failures of unstiffened SC shear walls was found to be the type of bending shear failure due to the debonding of the steel plate at the concrete interface. The ductility capacity of SC structures was also confirmed to be improved, which is considered to be a confining effect on steel plates in the longitudinal behavior of SC structures.

  • This study analytically reviewed the behavior of Steel Plate Concrete(SC) walls subjected to combined loads of axial force, flexural moment, and shear force to investigate the effects of shape and arrangement spacing of studs on the behavior of SC walls. To perform it, 9 cases of finite element analyses considering the different shape and spacing of studs in SC wall were carried out. The results showed that, for SC walls combined steel plate and concrete according to the Design Code, the compressive strength is higher than the tensile strength. Compared results from the finite element analyses of SC walls subjected to combined loads with Design Code showed that all cases were higher than the design strength. For KEPIC SNG, the moment and shear force were not influenced by the axial force of 0.1 to 0.2 times axial strength, however, from the analyses, it was found that the values were decreased as the axial force is increased.

  • Double skin composite (DSC) wall is a structural wall that is filed with concrete between two steel plate skins connected by tie bars. This type of wall was developed to enhance the structural performance of wall, to reduce wall thickness, and to enhance constructibility, eliminating the use of formwork and re-bars. In this study, cyclic tests were performed to investigate the inelastic behavior and earthquake resistance of isolated and coupled DSC walls with rectangular and T-shapedcross-sections. The DSC walls showed stable cyclic behaviors, exhibiting excellent energy dissipation capacity. The te st specimens failed by the tensile fracture of welded joints at the wall base and coupling beam and by the severe local buckling of the steel plate. The deformation capacity of the walls varied with the connection details at the wall base and their cross-sectional shapes. The specimens with well-detailed connections at the wall base showed relatively god deformation capacity ranging from 2.0% to 3.7% drift ratio. The load-carrying capacities of the isolated and coupled wall specimens were evaluated considering their inelastic behavior. The results were compared with the test results.

  • In this study, we performed an investigation on the variations in the structural capacity of steel plate walls with various infill plate details. Five three-story plate walls with thin web plates were tested. Parameters for the test specimens were the connection details between the moment frame and infill plates, such as weld and bolt connections, the location and length of weld connection, and coupling wall. Regardless of the details of infilled steel plate, the steel plate wall specimens showed excellent initial stiffness, strength, and energy dissipation capacity. However, the wall with bolt-connected infill plates showed slightly low deformation capacity. This result showed that for workability and cost efficiency, various wall details can be used in practice without causing a significant decrease in the structural capacity of steel plate walls. A method for making projections on strength and energy dissipation capacity of steel plate wall specimens with various details was developed.

  • Four RC shear wall specimens with a/d of 2.2 are designed. And a flexural retrofitting is performed for one specimen by both enlarging wall section and adding additional vertical reinforcements. Also the effectivity of jaketting wall sides is evaluated for the two methods using only steel plate or welded wire mesh with enlargement of section. Cyclic loads are applied to the retrofitted specimens according to the loading history proposed by ACI under constant axial force. Test result showed that the strength and ductility of specimen were improved where the section was enlarged after the installation of additional vertical reinforcements. Confining the ends of wall by U shape W.W.F. with enlargement of section showed most excellent structural capacity regarding to the strength and ductility. Retrofitting by using steel plate was much effective not only to protect the abrupt decrease of strength after yield but also to improve the deformation capacity.

  • In this study, the behavior of Steel Plate Concrete (SC) walls subjected to shear and axial forces to investigate the effects of shape and arrangement spacing of studs on the design of SC walls was analytically reviewed. For this purpose, 9 cases of finite element analyses considering the different shape and spacing of studs in SC wall were performed. The results showed that the steel plate was yielded at the lower load than the second yielding shear force of the design skeleton curve when the spacing of stud is excessively far from each other. It is also found that the shape of the stud did not affect the shear behavior of SC wall but, the spacing influenced to its composite action. In this study, it was also proven that the inclined shaped stud resists more effectively to the bucking load than the general shaped stud in SC wall.
