  • Carbon woven fabric/C/SiC composites were fabricated by multiple impregnations of carbon woven fabric/carbon preform with the polymer precursor of SiC, i.e., polycarbosilane. In addition, two kinds of low density carbon/carbon preforms which had different fiber volume fraction and fiber orientation, i.e., a carbon woven fabric(${\thickapprox}$55 vol%)/carbon and a chopped carbon fiber${\thickapprox}$40 vol%)/carbon composites, were reaction-bonded with a silicon melt at 1$700^{\circ}C$ in a vacuum to fabricate dense carbon fiber/Si/SiC composites. The reaction-bonding process increased the density to ~2.1 g/$cm^3$ from 1.6 g/$cm^3$ and 1.15 g/$cm^3$ of a carbon woven and a chopped carbon preforms, respectively. All of the composites fractured with extensive fiber pull-out. The higher the density the higher the stiffness and proportional limit stress. The mechanical properties obtained from a three-point bend and tension tests were compared. The ratios of the peak tensile stresses to the bending strengths of a carbon woven and a chopped carbon composites were about one-third, respectively. The carbon woven fabric/Si/SiC composites with density of 2.06 g/$cm^3$ showed ~120 MPa of ultimate strength and ~80 MPa of proportional limit in bend testing.

  • This study was conducted on greenhouses whose side heights had been raised after the columns of 1-2W basic type greenhouses had been cut and welding with the same-sized pipes. When the wind load or snow load affects restructured pipe greenhouse like this, those parts will be structurally unsafe. To examine this, the bending strength of welded columns were measured through four stages and compared with the pipes in their original condition. Results are as follows. In the case of a bending test on welded joints about steel pipes used for greenhouses, satisfactory results couldn't be drawn because sections of both ends and the loading parts couldn't endure loads and sank regardless of loading methods. Partial problems could be solved by inserting inside pipe(steel bar) at the sections and the loading parts, but it was necessary to devise more satisfactory bending test methods. The strength of welded joints wasn't much different compared with original conditions and demonstrated only slight differences according to the sample production conditions. However, significant incompleteness in the welding process was expected to cause a decisive loss in strength. On the assumption that there were no problems in the welding process or with regard to the inclination of sub materials for columns after connection, it was deemed reasonable to assume that the strength of welded pipes was about 84~90% of the strength of the pipes in their original condition. Considering mid- and long-term strength decline following the onset of rust at joints or welding sections, structural changes in the main sub materials that are used for greenhouses at farmhouses have to be avoided to ensure structural safety, unless these changes are inevitable.

  • Statement of problem: Delamination of veneering porcelain from underlying ceramic substructures has been reported for zirconia-ceramic restorations. Colored zirconia cores for esthetics have been reported that their bond strength with veneered porcelain is weaker compared to white zirconia cores. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the shear bond strength by manufacturing the veneering porcelain on the colored zirconia core, using the layering technique and heat-pressing technique, and to evaluate the clinical stability by comparing the result of this with that of conventional metal ceramic system. Material and methods: A Metal ceramic (MC) system was tested as a control group. The tested systems were Katana zirconia with CZR (ZB) and Katana Zirconia with NobelRondo Press (ZP). Thirty specimens, 10 for each system and control, were fabricated. Specimen disks, 3 mm high and 12 mm diameter, were fabricated with the lost-wax technique (MC) and the CAD-CAM (ZB and ZP). MC and ZB specimens were prepared using opaque and dentin veneering ceramics, veneered, 3 mm high and 2.8 mm in diameter, over the cores. ZP specimens were prepared using heat pressing ingots, 3 mm high and 2.8mm in diameter. The shear bond strength test was performed in a Shear bond test machine. Load was applied at a cross-head speed of 0.50 mm/min until failure. Mean shear bond strengths (MPa) were analyzed with the One-way ANOVA. After the shear bond test, fracture surfaces were examined by SEM. Results: The mean shear bond strengths (SD) in MPa were MC control 29.14 (2.26); ZB 29.48 (2.30); and ZP 29.51 (2.32). The shear bond strengths of the tested systems were not significantly different (P > .05). All groups presented cohesive and adhesive failures, and showed predominance of cohesive failures in ceramic veneers. Conclusion: 1. The shear bond strengths of the tested groups were not significantly different from the control group (P >.05). 2. There was no significant different between the layering technique and the heat pressing technique in the veneering methods on the colored zirconia core. 3. All groups presented cohesive and adhesive failures, and showed predominance of cohesive failures in ceramic veneers.

  • The overall reaction rate of fuel cell is governed by oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the cathode due to its slowest reaction compared to the oxidation of hydrogen in the anode. The ORR efficiency can be readily evaluated by examining the adsorption strength of atomic oxygen on the surface of catalysts (i.e., known as a descriptor) and the adsorption energy can be controlled by transforming the surface geometry of catalysts. In the current study, the effect of the surface geometry of catalysts (i.e., strain effect) on the adsorption strength of atomic oxygen on platinum catalysts was analyzed by using density functional theory (DFT). The optimized lattice constant of Pt ($3.977{\AA}$) was increased and decreased by 1% to apply tensile and compressive strain to the Pt surface. Then the oxygen adsorption strengths on the modified Pt surfaces were compared and the electron charge density of the O-adsorbed Pt surfaces was analyzed. As the interatomic distance increased, the oxygen adsorption strength became stronger and the d-band center of the Pt surface atoms was shifted toward the Fermi level, implying that anti-bonding orbitals were shifted to the conduction band from the valence band (i.e., the anti-bonding between O and Pt was less likely formed). Consequently, enhanced ORR efficiency may be expected if the surface Pt-Pt distance can be reduced by approximately 2~4% compared to the pure Pt owing to the moderately controlled oxygen binding strength for improved ORR.

  • The acidolysis was performed to produce structured lipid with palm mid fraction (PMF) and stearic acid for 7, 24, and 36 hr at $70^{\circ}C$. The reaction was catalyzed by lipozyme TLIM (immobilized lipase from Thermonyces lanuginosa, amount of 10% and 20% by weight of total substrates) in the shaking water bath. The reaction conditions for maximum incorporation of stearic acid on the structured lipid were obtained when molar ratio of PMF and stearic acid was 1:2; concentration of lipozyme TLIM was 20wt%; reaction temperature was $70^{\circ}C$; and reaction time was 36 hr. After reaction under this condition, incorporation of stearic acid in the structured lipid was obtained up to 36.3% while the major components of triacylglycerol were 1,2-dipalmitoyl-3-stearoylglycerol (PPS, 28.19 area%), 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-3-stearoylglycerol (POS/PSO, 20.70 area%) and 1-palmitoyl-2,3-distearoylglycerol (PSS, 18.13 area%). However, the fatty acid composition at the sn-2 position suggested that the positional specificity of lipozyme TLIM was not observed due to the acyl migration.

  • In order to evaluating applicability of RAP (recycled aggregate powder) in mortar, in this study, physical and mechanical tests was carried out. Material characteristics of recycled aggregate and RAP were evaluated and the mechanical properties of mortar replaced with RAP were analyzed. Test result of sieve analysis showed that as the milling time increased the fineness modulus was decreased and the distribution of 0.6 mm particle size was found to increase. The fluidity of mortar mixture substituted with RAP tended to increase than Plain mixture. It was result that the increasing fluidity was affected by unreacted surplus water in the mortar as the binder was replaced with RAP. From the compressive strength result of the mortar subjected to RAP, it was found that the RAP was able to replace up to about 10% of unit binder weight although the compressive strength of mortar was decreased as the RAP replacement increased. From the above study, it can be concluded that the physical properties of RAP satisfied the quality standard of aggregate for replacement with fine aggregate. Moreover, in case of the RAP was replaced up to 10% of unit cement weight, it was able to be possible to improve fluidity and compressive strength of mortar.

  • Aerogel is a material having a nanopore structure based on a high porosity. Due to this high porosity, it has excellent properties not found in conventional materials, but its application has been limited due to low mechanical strength. Therefore, to improve the mechanical strength of the aerogel, polyurea crosslinking was introduced and a precursor having an amine group essential for polyurea polymer formation was selected to synthesize a polyurea crosslinked aerogel composite. In addition, the crosslinking of polyurea was adjusted according to the number of amine groups present in aminosilane. It was confirmed through various analyses that the nanopore structure of the aerogel was maintained to have mesopores. The aerogel thus formed was able to improve the mechanical strength by about two times, and it was confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscope analysis that a one-dimensional polymer was formed on the silica aerogel surface through the introduction of ethylene diamine. The one-dimensional polymer thus formed has improved mechanical properties, resulting in securing an elastic modulus of about 2.66 MPa.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate characteristics of lathe scrap for manufacturing fiber reinforced cementitious composites(FRCCs) to use lathe scrap as a alternative materials of steel fiber. It should be noted that the use of the lathe scrap for making FRCCs raised friendly environmental effect as well as economy because the lathe scrap was a by-product of steel manufactures. For this purpose, various steel scraps were collected from processing plants of metal and then their physical properties were evaluated. Also, steel scraps were classified and analyzed according to the KS D 2101 and then of these scraps, lathe scrap as a alternative materials of steel fiber was suggested. In addition, FRCCs containing lathe scraps were made according to their total volume fractions of 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% for water-binder ratios of 30%, 40%, respectively, and then characteristics, such as the workability, compressive strength, and flexural strength of those were evaluated. It was observed from the test result that the compressive strengths at 7 and 28 days of FRCCs containing lathe scrap were slightly small but the flexural strengths at 28 days of those increased by 10% compared with plain concrete.

  • Hwangtoh is the rich resource that accounts for about 15.0% of the domestic soil, and can be used as the admixture of concrete with Pozzolan characteristics if activated by rapidly freezing after burning with high temperature. In this study, the mortar curbs containing active hwangtoh were produced, based on the mixture for the mortar curbs sold on the market. The substitution rate of active hwangtoh were considered 10.0% and 25.0%, and the test items were selected to compressive and flexural strength tests, freezing/thawing resistance tests, accelerated carbonation tests, and accelerated chloride diffusion tests. In the results of the mechanical performance, it was showed that the highest strength was evaluated in OPC mixture, and the increase in strength was small by the increase of age, which was believed to be due to the fact that most of the strength in each mixture was created in three days of steam curing. The results of the freezing/thawing tests for 28 aged days showed the reduction rate of compressive strength was 85.0% or higher for all specimen, meeting the criteria presented. The accelerated carbonation tests were carried out on the specimen at 28 days of age, and the results showed that the mortar with active hwangtoh had lower carbonation resistance performance than mortar with OPC. The passed charge of each mixture was assessed in accordance with ASTM C 1202 on 28 and 91 aged days. The OPC mixture had "Low" rate and the mortar with active hwangtoh had "Moderate" rate. So it was thought that the mortar with active hwangtoh had appropriate resistance performance for chloride attack.

  • The transition temperature of respiratory activity of mitochondria isolated from panicles of rice plant was measured with 41 varieties bred in Korea, which had been agronomically classified into five groups based on their relative cold-tolerance; S (strong cold-tolerance), S-M (moderate to strong cold-tolerance), M (moderate cold-tolerance), M-W (moderate to weak cold-tolerance) and W (weak cold-tolerance). The temperature was found to be $11.5{\sim}13.5^{\circ}C$ for group S, $13.5{\sim}16^{\circ}C$ for group S-M, $16{\sim}17^{\circ}C$ for group M, $17{\sim}18^{\circ}C$ for group M-W, and ${\geq}18^{\circ}C$ for group W respectively with a few exceptions of minor deviation, demonstrating a close correlation between the transition temperature and the chilling susceptivity of a variety. This observation supports the suggestion that the transition temperature of respiratory activity of panicles be adopted as a reliable index for grading a rice variety as to its overall cold tolerance. Also studied is on the methodology for measurement of the transition temperature in the aspect of analytical biochemistry. In addition to the usual polarographic method, a spectrophotometric method which is based on the enzymatic assay of membrane-bound cytochrome C oxidase was examined. This enzyme was found previousely and confirmed again in the present work to be a key factor governing the respiratory trantion at least in plant mitochondria. The optical method was turned out to be very successful, although it was a little more complicate and time-consuming than the electrochemical method.
