  • In the study, the effects of damping devices on damping ratio increase and wind-load reduction were investigated based on the computational platform, which is one of the parametric modeling methods. The computational platform helps the designers or engineers to evaluate the efficacy of the numerous alternative structural systems for irregular Super-Tall building, which is crucial in determining the capacity and the number of the supplemental damping devices for adding the required damping ratios to the building. The inherent damping ratio was estimated based on the related domestic and foreign researches conducted by using real wind-load records. Two types of damping devices were considered: One is inter-story installation type passive control devices and the other is mass type active control devices. The supplemental damping ratio due to the damping devices was calculated by means of equivalent static analysis using an equation suggested by FEMA. The optimal design of the damping devices was conducted by using the computational platform. The structural element quantity reduction effect resulting from the installation of the damping devices could be simply assessed by proposing a wind-load reduction factor, and the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by a numerical example of a 455m high-rise building. The comparison between roof displacement and the story shear forces by the nonlinear time history analysis and the proposed method indicated that the proposed method could simply but approximately estimate the effects of the supplemental damping devices on the roof displacement and the member force reduction.

  • The allowed operation space for the mass damper in an active tuned mass damper (ATMD) system is limited for most civil structures. In this study, a restrained stroke active tuned mass damper (RS-ATMD) system with a end-spring and a holder that reduces the stroke of the mass damper with maintaining the control effect durably is proposed. This new control system functions as a conventional ATMD within the predetermined stroke limitation under small excitation and as an RS-ATMD beyond that limitation under large excitation. A new control algorithm considering such an operation principle of the RS-ATMD are also provided. Parameteric study for the various design factors of the RS-ATMD is conducted and the control effectiveness are investigated in comparison with the ATMD. Exposed to sinusoidal or impact load, the RS-ATMD system shows the considerable reduction of the maximum stroke of the mass damper with the slight diminution in the control effectiveness. Excited by random load, it also shows the considerable reduction of the maximum stroke of the mass damper not allowing the diminution in the control effectiveness.

  • Building structures of apartment in korea conventionally adopt shear walls using coupling beams as seismic force-resisting systems. Energy dissipating devices employed the building structures are used instead of the coupling beams in order to increase the seismic performances by providing additional damping and stiffness. This study aims to introduce energy dissipating devices which are preferred in structural system and aims to investigate structural behaviors of shear wall structures employing such devices instead of coupling beams. In order for achieve research objectives, Finite Element Analysis and Nonlinear analysis was carry out. Finite Element Analysis results was correspond with experimental results and this is indicated that the device can provide sufficient additional damping and stiffness into shear wall structures. Throughout nonlinear static analyses, examples structures with the devices can enhance seismic performance of building structures due to their sufficient energy dissipating capacities. Especially, strength and ductility capacities were significantly improved when it is compared with the performance of building structures without the devices. Throughout nonlinear dynamic analyses, it was observed that structural damages can be mitigated due to reduced seismic demands for seismic force-resisting systems. It is especially noted due to the fact that story drifts, accelerations, shear demands are reduced by 15~18%, 20~28% and 15~20%, respectively.

  • In this study, to examine seismic reinforcement effect of a school building constructed prior to application of seismic design, a Double I-type damper supported by wall was installed to perform comparative analysis on existing non-seismic designed RC frame. As a result of experiment, while non-seismic designed specimen showed rapid reduction in strength and brittle shear destruction as damages were focused on top and bottom of left and right columns, reinforced specimen showed hysteretic characteristics of a large ellipse with great energy absorption ability, exhibiting perfectly behavior with increased strength and stiffness from damper reinforcement. In addition, as a result of comparing stiffness reduction between the two specimens, specimen reinforced by shear wall type damper was effective in preventing stiffness reduction. Energy dissipation ability of specimen reinforced by Double I-type damper was about 3.5 times as high as energy dissipation ability of non-reinforced specimen. Such enhancement in energy dissipation ability is considered to be the result of improved strength and deformation.

  • In this paper, the vibration control effect of the isotropic damping devices (so-called Kagome dampers) was investigated by applying the Kagome dampers to a 20-story frame structure apartment. A new Kagome Damper System (KGDS) composed of the dampers and supporting column was proposed and numerical analyses were performed to investigate the effects of stiffness ratio between controlled structure and supporting column, the damper size and the number of the dampers. The numerical analysis results of a structure with KGDS up to the third story showed that the stiffness ratio should be higher than 6.4 and the damper size be at least $700{\times}700mm$ to effectively reduce the base shear and the maximum drift of the uppermost story. When the KGDS was installed up to the fifth story, the stiffness ratio should be higher than 7.0 and damper size needs to be at least $500{\times}500mm$ for obtaining the target performance.

  • This experimental paper deals with the performance of tanks that are turned the active A.R.T(Anti-Rolling Tank) when the fluid transfers from wing tank to the opposite tank by the power developed by the automatic control system (INTERING Stabilizer), which was installed in the fishery training ship T/S. A - RA (G/T:990 tons) of Cheju National University. In this paper, the author has tested the performance of INTERING Stabilizer for the signals obtained by the inclinometer in irregular waves and compared with the results obtained in passive mode operation at stop and at various ship speeds. The performances of the system were confirmed the results as follows through the tests: 1. The average amplitude and significant roll (${\pi}$1/3) of the passive and active mode operations in the condition of stoped engine and underway were obtained 8.30$^{\circ}$, 4.37$^{\circ}$, 8.30$^{\circ}$, 4.37$^{\circ}$, and 5.01$^{\circ}$, 4.36$^{\circ}$, 5.50$^{\circ}$, 5.10$^{\circ}$, respectively. 2. The rates of performance of active mode operations were carried out during a sea trial in the condition of stop engine and underway resulted in 47.5%, 12.7%, respectively, therefore the active mode operation estimated to be improved more than passive mode operation. 3. Active - A.R.T by INTERING Stabilizer didn't affect the amplitude of pitching.

  • Recently, there has been a tendency to improve seismic performance of building structure by installing a steel hysteretic damping device which is economically efficient and easy to install and maintain. However, for a reinforced concrete building, a set of complicated connecting hardware and braces to fix the steel hysteretic damping device yields deteriorated reliability in damping performance. Therefore, this study presents a method of directly embedding a Kagome damper, which was investigated in previous researches, into a concrete structure without additional connecting hardware. Moreover, in this study, a series of experiments conducted to provide a basis of the Kagome damper by confirming the seismic behavior for various embedded lengths. As a result, in a group of the embedded length of $1.0l_d$, the dampers were pulled out, while concrete breakout occurs. In a group of $2.0l_d$, neither pull-out nor concrete breakout occurred, while the dampers show stable behavior. Moreover, the buried length of $2.0l_d$ has 1.3 times better energy dissipation capacity. The system presented in this study can reduce the cost and period for installing, omitting making additional hardware.

  • This paper aims to investigate the seismic characteristics of strip-type damping devices possessing optimized shapes for the moment-resisting mechanism throughout analytical and experimental studies. Predicting equations for initial stiffness and yielding strength were introduced and compared with analytical results obtained from finite element analyses (FEAs) using commercial FEA program ABAQUS. In order for establishing predicting equations, two idealized processes were considered and both predicting equations showed that they could provide enough approximations for seismic applications in building structures. Throughout experimental studies, it was noted that structural uncertainties on mild steels, connection details and structural types linking damping devices with building structures could interrupt predicting structural behavior of the devices. Also, it was observed that shear stress concentrations should be considered if shear yielding type devices are applied into building structures. Nevertheless, it was shown that structural conservatism can be established using the predicting equations and seismic applications of the damping devices can enhance the seismic performance of building structures efficiently in the viewpoint that they have high resistance to low-cycle fatigue failures.
