Not enough data on nutritional change of foods by gamma irradiation are accumulated. It is known that amounts and digestibility of macronutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and lipids are not significantly altered by irradiation treatment. However, among micronutrients, vitamins are known to be susceptible to irradiation. This study was conducted to investigate the change of contents of riboflavin in egg powder and niacin in chicken breast. By irradiation of 5 and 10 kGy, riboflavin contents of egg powder were respectively reduced to $80.18\%\;and\;84.80\%$ of non-irradiated sample, and niacin contents in chicken breast were reduced to $85.30\%\;and\;92.60\%$, respectively. These results suggest that the reduction rate by gamma irradiation seems to be lower in niacin content than in riboflavin, and the losses of riboflavin and niacin occur within the range of $20\%$ by irradiation of up to 10 kGy.
This study was investigated the effect of gamma irradiation (GI) on the shelf-life and quality improvement of squid sundae (a traditional Korean sausage) stored at room temperature after 0 (control), 10 and 20 kGy doses of irradiation. The total viable cells decreased with increasing irradiation dose, and no viable cells were detected with the doses of 20 kGy. There were no significant changes in pH compared to the control. The volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values of GI (20 kGy) squid sundae were significantly lower than those of the control. In addition, the induction period for the GI (20 kGy) squid sundae measured by the Rancimat method was higher level than that of the control. In a sensory evaluation, there were no significant differences between the control and GI samples during storage.
The distance between the source and the detector, the diameter of the detector, and the volume effect of the radiation source result in a change in solid angle at the detector entrance, which affects the determination of detection efficiency by causing a difference in path length within the detector. A typical analysis method for calculating solid angles was useful only for a source (60Co) with a simple geometric structure, so in this experiment, the distance between the detector and the source was measured by switching on for up to 25 cm with the reference point of window cap 0.5 cm. In addition, 450 and 1000 ㎖ Marinelli beaker of standard volumetric sources were closely adhered to the detector. For circular point sources co-axial with the detector, the change in the solid angle to the distance from the detector window is equal to half the square radius of the source versus the square radius of the detector, if the resulting relationship of the calculation analysis results in the detector being less than the radius of the source. Since the solid angular difference is 0.5 the result of Monte Carlo is acceptable. The relationship between detector and source distance is shown. Solid angles have been verified to decrease rapidly with distance. Measurement and simulation results for a volumetric source show a difference of ±1.01% from a distance of 0 cm and less than 4 % when the distance is reduced to 5 and 10 cm. It can be seen that the longer distance, the smaller efficiency angle, and the exponential increase in attenuation as the energy decreases, is reflected in the calculation of efficiency. Thus, the detection efficiency has proved sufficient for the use of solid angle and Monte Carlo codes.
This study compared PENELOPE with measured values from low energy peak to high energy peak to reduce peak to compton ratio and continuum background spectrum using $^{60}Co$, $^{137}Cs$ and mixed volume source. In addition, the change in backscattering and compton edge efficiency was compared with that of PENELOPE through changes in the vicinity of low energy. The results from the mixed volume source are applied to the soil samples to determine how much the minimum detection limits of the soil samples are reduced in the suppression and unsuppressed mode. The compton suppression of the low energy region of $^{60}CO$ (1,173 keV) was considerable, and the Compton edge RF for the $^{137}Cs$ (661 keV) peak was 2.8. In particular, the $^{60}Co$ source emits coincidence gamma rays of 1,173.2 keV and 1,332.5 keV, so compton inhibition was reduced by approximately 21%. RF of compton edges of 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV emitted from a $^{60}Co$ source was 3.2 and 3.4, and the peak to compton edge ratio was improved to 8: 1. And Compared with Penelope, the uncertainty was well within 2%. In compton unsuppressed mode, MDA values of 661 keV, 1,173 keV and 1,332 keV were 0.535, 0.173 and 0.136 Bq/kg, respectively, but decreased in compton suppressed mode to 0.121, 0.00826 and 0.00728 Bq/kg. Thus, Compton suppressed could reduce the background radioactivity and the radioactivity contained in the detector itself.
Purpose: Europe and U.S use multi-bed therapy rooms. Hereupon, this study aims to examine the safety when current one-bed therapy rooms in Seoul National University Hospital is changed into two-bed ones. Materials and Methods: This study evaluated external exposure by gamma radiation emitted from other patients and internal and external exposure caused by pollutions from other patients in case that Seoul National University Hospital installs a shielding wall between beds in existing therapy rooms. Results: When internal and external exposure was evaluated to evaluate safety of two-bed hospital rooms, 'isolation amount of patients' 5mSv exposure or below is received according to the Atomic Energy Act. Conclusion: With the increasing number of patients with thyoid cancer, patients using therapy rooms are on the rise. Therefore, improving one-person therapy rooms to two-person ones in line with international trend would increase cost reduction and management efficiency, and patients' alienation and isolation can be reduced to increase healing effects.
Garlic was stored at 4, 8, and $12^{\circ}C$ to investigate the development of green discoloration. Green discoloration developed after 7 day of storage ar $4^{\circ}C$, while it developed after 15 day of storage at 8 and $12^{\circ}C$. The effect of maleic hydrazide fertilization on green discoloration of garlic was not observed. Green discoloration of garlic was accelerated by gamma-radiation treatment. The addition of cysteine did not prevent green discoloration, which decreased the commercial value of the garlic due to the presence of white specks on the surface. When 3% ascorbic acid was added to the garlic, green discoloration developed in 6 and 24 hr at room temperature and $4^{\circ}C$, respectively. The tendency of garlic to discolor was also investigated at various storage temperatures. Discolored garlic stored for 30 day at low temperatures was conditioned at $20{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ for 20 day. The green discoloration of garlic conditioned at 20 and $25^{\circ}C$ did not disappear in 20 day, but disappeared in 20 day when conditioned at $30^{\circ}C$. The L, a, and b values of garlic conditioned at 35, 40, and $45^{\circ}C$ for 4 day were similar to those of normal garlic. Conclusively, our results indicated that the best method for suppressing green discoloration was conditioning discolored garlic at $35^{\circ}C$ for 4 day.
A variety of experiments concerning the development of ideal prosthetic grafts for correcting circumferential tracheal defects have been performed. The requirements for an ideal tracheal prosthesis are impermeability to air, consistency to prevent collapse, and acceptance by the host tissue causing a minimum inflammatory reaction, allowing fibroblastic infiltration and epithelialization. The synthetic material, polyurethane(PU), is known as a biocompatible polymer with an inert component. In this study, the tracheal prosthesis was made from microporous PU(30 micrometer in diameter) coated with gelatin and reinforced with isoplastic rings. This procedure provides the prosthesis with a compression strength. The out side diame er of the prosthesis was 20 mm with a length of 30 mm. The gelatin used in the study was obtained from pig skin and immobilized and cross-linked by irradiation(60 Co gamma ray) to promote host tissue incorporation and render the prosthesis epithelization after implantation. Animal experiments using 10 mongrel dogs were performed to compare three kinds of prosthesis; gelatin coated polyurethane graft, uncoated polyurethane graft, and prosthesisf pericadium complex graft. After 6 weeks of implantation, the epithelialization of implants was seen on the gelatin-coated and prosthesisfpericadium complex grafts. Implanted prosthesis were complicated by airway obstruction due to anastomosis granuloma. Early tracheal stenosis was found in the uncoated graft group. Two kind of anastomosis techniques were tested on the gelatin-coated prosthesis. Everted anastomosis resulted severe granuloma than the inverted anastomosis. In the prosthesislpericadium complex graft, bacteria and inflammation at a anastomotic site was found. Based on these results, gelatin coated porous polyurethane trachea prosthesis is biocompatible and may be useful in clinical application with further investigation.
CdS-QD particles are a nano-sized semiconducting crystal that emits light. Their optical properties show great potential in many areas of applications such as disease-diagnostic reagents, optical technologies, media industries and solar cells. The wavelength of emitting light depends on the particle size and thus the quality control of CdS-QD particle requires accurate determination of the size distribution. In this study, CdS-QD particles were synthesized by a simple ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation method. As a particle stabilizer polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were added. In order to determine the size and size distribution of the CdS-QD particles, sedimentation field-flow fractionation (SdFFF) was employed. Effects of carious parameters including the the flow rate, external field strength, and field programming conditions were investigated to optimize SdFFF for analysis of CdS-QD particles. The Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis show the primary single particle size was ~4 nm, TEM images indicate that the primarty particles were aggregated to form secondary particles having the mean size of about 159 nm. As the concentration of the stabilizer increases, the particle size tends to decrease. Mean size determined by SdFFF, TEM, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were 126, 159, and 152 nm, respectively. Results showed SdFFF may become a useful tool for determination of the size and its distribution of various types of inorganic particles.
The effects of bacterial lysis on the rate of quartz dissolution were investigated under pH 7 condition using Bacillus subtilis cells which were either irradiated or non-irradiated with gamma ray. The amount of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) which resulted from bacterial lysis increased in slurries of quartz and bacteria mixture over experimental period. Lysis of non-irradiated bacteria led to the elevated concentration of dissolved silicon when compared with abiotic control. Concomitant increase in the amounts of DOC and dissolved silicon over time indicated that lixiviation of silicon from quartz was due to bacterial lysis. Higher amounts of DOC and dissolved silicon were present in the irradiated bacterial slurries than those of non-irradiated bacteria. The enhancement of quartz dissolution in the irradiated bacterial slurries was likely attributed to disruption of organic molecules in the bacterial cells by gamma ray and formation of effective ligands for quartz dissolution. The results suggest that the effects of bacterial lysis on mineral weathering rate should be considered for prediction of time for released radionuclides to migrate to surface biosphere in high level radioactive waste disposal site.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect the radiation-resistance of chitosan on the mice. A healthy male ICR mice were used for experiment. The SOD and MDA activity was measured from the liver of mice at 48 and 72 hours after the irradiation. The ultrastructural changes of the liver by irradiation was observed at 24, 48 and 72 hours after irradiation. The experimental groups were divided into three groups. Group 1 was the control group which was not treated with chitosanoligosaccharide before or after iradiation. Group 2 was the prefeeding group which chitosanoligosaccharide solution was supplied by feeding ad libitum for 30 days before irradiation. Group 3 was the postfeeding group which chitosanoligosaccharide solution was supplied by feeding after irradiation. In all groups 10 mice were used. The results were as follow: The SOD and MDA activity of the prefeeding group was decreased significantly (P<0.01). Control group - The nuclei were condensed. The mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER) were extended and the ribosome was dropped from the rER. Prefeeding group - The nuclei were rounded. The mitochondria was elongated. And the rER attached ribosomes. Postfeeding group - The nuclei were slightly condensed. The mitochondria and the rER were extended and the ribosome was dropped from the rER. It was concluded that the chitosanoligosaccharide was effective in the radiation-protection. So, chitosan would have the potential as the radiation-protection materials.
