Quality Characteristics of Unshiu Orange and Pear Packaged with Paper Incorporated with Antimicrobial Agents (항균소재를 함유한 포장재로 포장한 밀감과 배의 저장중 품질 특성 변화)

  • In order to help the preservation of the unshiu orange and pear, antimicrobial paper incorporating grapefruit seed extract and zeolite was applied to pack fruits. Unshiu orange was packed in a box (24${\times}$24${\times}$22 cm) attached with antimicrobial paper and then stored respectively at l$0^{\circ}C$. Pears were wrapped individually before storage at l$0^{\circ}C$. During the storage, weight loss, pH, total acidity, soluble solid content, microbial load and decay were measured as quality indices. Steady pH increase in unshiu orange was observed to slightly decrease total acidity during the storage with little difference between the packaging treatments. The microbial loads of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast/mold counts were suppressed during storage by the antimicrobial paper packaging, which also contributed to reducing the decayed unshiu orange. Limited reduction of total aerobic bacteria and yeast/mold counts was observed only for initial storage period for the pears wrapped with 9 and 12% antimicrobial agent-added papers. Antimicrobial paper was useful for the reduction of microbial load in unshiu orange and pear without other quality deterioration.

Development of Functional Hanji Added Citrus Peel(I) - Hanji added Korean citrus peel - (감귤박을 첨가한 기능성 한지제조 기술개발(제1보) - 한국산 감귤박 첨가 한지 -)

  • This study was carried out to develop a new application field and obtain the basic data of citrus peel as waste in Jeju island and traditional Hanji for producing functional Hanji. The results measuring physical and optical properties, water vapor permeance and antibacterial activity are as follows. It was revealed that apparent density go as down but bulk raise up in the structural view of Hanji with increasing of the addition various Korean citrus peel (citrus unshiu, cheonggyun and hanrabong peel, and citrus unshiu peel powder) percentages, and that the density of Hanji added citrus unshiu peel was higher, but bulk was lower in compared with Hanji added other kinds of peel. Those Hanji added citrus unshiu peel, cheonggyun peel, hanrabong peel and citrus unshiu powder were very great not only in the strength (breaking length, burst index, tear index and folding endurance) but also in water vapor permeant rate in comparison with Hanji. The pHs of Hanji were neutrality (7 to 8). The brightness of the Hanji added various citrus peel percentages was low in compared to Hanji, and the 40% addition of hanrabong peel was the lowest. When 40% hanrabong peel was added to Hanji, it was very yellow in the color degree. When cheonggyun peel was added to Hanji manufacture, water vapor permeant rate was highly effective. It is known that vacant space of intrafiber was reduced by image analysis of Hanji and the additions of peel of citrus unshiu, cheonggyun and hanrabong were distributed equally in the interior of Hanji. The antibacterial activity of Hanji added citrus unshiu peel is more than 98%. After all, it would be able to increase utilization of Hanji, extensively. Namely, production of high quality Hanji added functional materials is expected for new valuable industry of citrus peel and Hanji.

Effect of Occurrence of Scion Root on the Growth and Root Nutrient Contents of 'Shiranuhi' Mandarin Hybrid grown in Plastic Film House (자근발생이 부지화 감귤나무의 수체 생육과 뿌리내 양분함량에 미치는 영향)

  • BACKGROUND: 'Shiranuhi' mandarin is a major cultivar among all late ripening type of citrus, and is widely cultivated in Korea. However, many farmers have reported scion root problems in their orchard resulting in reduced flowering and fruiting. It is necessary that the physiology of scion-rooted 'Shiranuhi' mandarin trees is further understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: This experiment was conducted to understand the growth response and physiology of scion-rooted 'Shiranuhi' mandarin hybrids. In our study, 'Shiranuhi' mandarin trees were divided into two groups: trees without scion roots (control) and trees with scion roots. The experiment was conducted in Seogwipo of Jeju, with ten replicates for each group. Growth of trees with scion roots was more vigorous and the trees were taller than the controls. Tree height and trunk diameter of scion-rooted trees were significantly higher than those of control trees. Exposed length of rootstocks of scion-rooted trees was significantly lower (by about 2 cm) than that of control trees (8.6 cm). In terms of root nutrition, carbon contents of scion-rooted trees was significantly lower than that of control trees, but nitrogen and potassium concentrations in scion roots were significantly higher than those in control roots. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, we infer that growth of scion-rooted trees was very vigorous and the content of nitrogen in these roots was higher than that in the control tree roots. Thus, the carbon/nitrogen ratio of scion roots was significantly lower than that of the control roots.

Major Components of Mushroom Mycelia Cultivated with Citrus Juice Processing Wastes (감귤 주스 착즙박을 이용하여 재배된 버섯균사체의 성분)

  • This study investigated the major components of citrus juice processing wastes (CJPW) as well as mushroom mycelia that were cultivated with the CJPW, such as Pycnoporus coccineus (PC), Lentinus edodes (LE), Pleurotus eryngii (PE), Hericium coralloides (HC), Panellus serotinus (PS) and Ganoderma lucidum (GL). The organic acid contents of the mushroom mycelia were similar to or less than those of the CJPW, but the free sugar contents of the mycelia were lower than those of the CJPW. The narirutin contents of the mushroom mycelia ranged from 448.67-932.98 mg% and were similar to or less than those of the CJPW. However, the hesperidin contents of the mycelia ranged from 3019.94-4980.94 mg% (except for the PC mycelium) and were 17.81-52.61% greater than the CJPW. The dietary fiber contents of the mycelia were similar to or more than those the CJPW. With the exception of PE, the electron donating abilities (EDA) and nitrite scavenging abilities (NSA) showed a tendency to decrease.

In vitro Fermentation Characteristics of Juice Pomaces Using Equine Fecal Inoculum (말 분변을 이용한 주스박의 in vitro 발효 특성)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the changes of pH, dry matter digestibility (DMD), $NH_3-N$ concentrate, gas production and volatile fatty acid (VFA) through in vitro fermentation by adding horse feces to various juice pomaces fermented with Bacillus, yeast and lactic acid bacteria. The pH range of fermented fluid with juice pomaces was 6.4-7.1, indicating that the digestion by microbial fermentation was normal. Juice pomaces adopted will be helpfully used to assist with digestion by microbes in intestines because approximately $10^9CFU/m{\ell}$ microbes were grown after 48 hours in fermented fluid. DMD rate gradually increased from 12 hours. It was 39.19% in pomaces of apple, 38.22% in grape, 37.02% in carrot, 36.2% in citrus and 34.35% in mixture respectively after 48 hours. $NH_3-N$ concentrate was not changed significantly as it was maintained at $1.5mg/100m{\ell}$ level in the entire treatment group from beginning of fermentation until 12 hours, but increased rapidly from 24 hours. Amount of gas produced was lowest in the mixture and increased rapidly after 12 hours. Total VFA increased from 24 hours and was highest at 48 hours. It was suggested that dry matter digestion was processed while fermented juice pomaces kept proper pH during in vitro digestion, and cellulose degrading microorganisms could act actively in the caecum and colon of horses.

  • This is the research about the concentration of trace citrus flavor components in water by pervaporation. We have investigated the permeation characteristics depending on the material and formation of membranes using four siloxane-based polymer composite membranes. We have also chosen the optimal membrane and investigated the permeation characteristics depending on the feed temperature, concentration and flow rate. And then it has been analyzed by using resistance-in series model. In the permeation experiment of citrus essence aroma model solution through the four siloxane-based polymer composite membranes, PVDF/POMS membranes have showed the best flavor flux and enrichment factor. As a result of the permeation experiment depending on the feed temperature, concentration and flow rate, we can find that as the feed temperature and concentration increase, the flavor flux increases while the enrichment factor decreases. And the flavor flux and enrichment factor increased as the flow rate increases.

Brewers' Dried Grain as a Feed Additive for the Korean Rhinoceros Beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma (사료첨가제로서 맥주박이 장수풍뎅이 유충의 생육에 미치는 영향)

  • Edible insects have recently been increasingly promoted as a source of protein. As the number of farms rearing these insect increases, it is important to develop safe and nutritious feed sources to improve their commercial quality. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of food by-products as feed supplements for the Korean rhinoceros beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma, which has been registered as a general food ingredient in Korea. We compared the effects of waste citrus peel, soybean curd cake, soybean oil meal, and brewers' dried grain on the growth of third instar larvae of A. dichotoma. Groups of larvae were fed with fermented sawdust and nine different combinations of the above by-products and the effects on their growth were measured until pupation. The highest survival rate was with feed supplemented with 10% brewers' dried grain (66.7%, p<0.05), and these larvae were also 26% heavier (p<0.05) than the control group that received no supplementation. In the 10% brewers' dried grain group, the larval period of third instar was shortened by almost 28 days (p<0.01) compared to the control group. Of all the groups, only that which was fed the brewers' dried grain supplement showed more than a 90% pupation rate (p<0.05). Therefore, brewers' dried grain may be useful as a source of feed for A. dichotoma.

Response Surface Modeling for the Adsorption of Dye Eosin Y by Activated Carbon Prepared from Waste Citrus Peel (폐감귤박으로 만든 활성탄을 이용한 염료 Eosin Y 흡착에서 반응표면 모델링)

  • The adsorption of Eosin Y by the activated carbon (WCAC) prepared from waste citrus peel was investigated by using response surface methodology (RSM) and Box-Behnken design (BBD) statistical procedures. Experiments were carried out as per BBD with three input parameters, the Eosin Y concentration (Conc. : 30~50 mg/L), the solution temperature (Temp. : 293~313 K), and the adsorbent dose (Dose : 0.05~0.15 g/L). Regression analysis showed a good fit of the experimental data to the second-order polynomial model with coefficients of the determination ($R^2$) value of 0.9851 and P-value (Lack of fit) of 0.342. An optimum dye uptake of 59.3 mg/g was achieved at the dye concentration of 50 mg/L, the temperature of 333 K, and the adsorbent dose of 0.1056 g. The adsorption process of Eosin Y by WCAC can be well described by the pseudo second order kinetic model. The experimental data followed the Langmuir isotherm model.
