  • This study was conducted to identify factors influencing subjective happiness among nursing students. Participants consisted of 147 nursing students who were in the third and fourth years at two universities located in the Chungbuk and Kyungbuk provinces. Data were collected using questionnaires that looked at college-based stress, clinical-based stress, self-esteem, and subjective happiness from September 26 to October 29, 2016. Collected data were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 statistics program with descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), Scheffe's test, and hierarchical regression. The mean score for subjective happiness was 19.91 (range: 4 to 28). The mean for college-based stress was 2.92, and clinical-based stress was 2.61 (range: 1 to 5). The mean for self-esteem was 29.74 (range: 10 to 40). The significant predictors of subjective happiness in nursing students were self-esteem (p<.001), economic status (p=.002), interpersonal relationships (p=.001), and satisfaction with their major (p=.003). The explanatory power of variance was 68%, with self-esteem serving as the major predictor variable for subjective happiness. Therefore, we need various strategies that can enhance self-esteem, satisfaction with the major, and interpersonal relationships in order to improve nursing students' subjective happiness.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the levels of academic stress, sociality, and self-directed learning in nursing students, and to examine the relationship between the variables. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from 208 students in the first and second years of a nursing program. This study was performed from December 5 to December 10, 2015. The data were analyzed with SPSS WIN 18.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). The results were as follows. The mean score of academic stress was $3.20{\pm}0.53$, that of sociality was $2.91{\pm}0.25$, and that of self-directed learning was $3.33{\pm}0.33$. There was a negative correlation between academic stress and self-directed learning (r=-0.16, p=0.024) and a positive correlation between sociality and self-directed learning (r=0.17, p=0.015). Higher academic stress correlated with lower self-directed learning, while higher sociality correlated with higher self-directed learning. The results indicate that the levels of academic stress, sociality, and self-directed learning in nursing students can influence the quality of nursing education. Thus, there is a need to develop programs to reduce academic stress and to help improve sociality and self-directed learning for nursing students.

  • This study set out to investigate the burden and needs of family members of ICU(Intensive Care Unit) patients facing a crisis situation of a family member being hospitalized in ICU and check their connections. Data were collected from May to October 2013. The subjects include 93 main family caregivers of patients hospitalized in ICU at four general hospitals in the B area for three days or longer. Collected data were put to t-test, ANOVA, Scheff$\acute{e}$ test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis with the SPSS WIN 20.0 program. As a result, the family members of ICU patients scored mean 3.56 points(out of five) on burden and mean 3.58 points(out of four) on needs, recording a moderate or higher level in both the areas. There was significant difference(F=3.463, p=.036) in burden according to the general characteristics with the number of days in the hospital. There was significant positive correlation(r=.332, p<.001) between their burden and needs. Those findings indicate that an active nursing intervention to reduce the burden of the families of ICU patients in a crisis situation and check their needs will be able to mitigate the family crisis and further have positive influences on the recovery of ICU patients.
