The data were collected though questionnaire survey on 87 patients, who were, for the first time, hospitalized for 5~7 days at five general hospitals in J city. The survey was performed during July 3~August 2, 2000. The nurse image was analyzed through the instrument conceived by Il-Sim Yang(1998) on the basis of four dimensions ; traditional, social, professional and personal. The collected data were processed through SPSS/WIN to examine t-test, ANOVA and paired t-test. The study results were summarized as follows ; 1. Before hospitalization, patients' score of nurse image was the highest in professional dimension, followed by personal, traditional and social in order. 2. After hospitalization experience, the score of nurse image was the highest in personal dimension, followed by professional, traditional and social one. 4. The nurse image after hospitalization showed statistically significant differences in marital status(p=.002) only. 5. The difference of nurse image before and after hospitalization experience showed statistical significance in traditional (p=.007) and social (p=.037) dimensions. 6. The score of nurse image was improved in all dimensions after hospitalization experience. In conclusion, hospitalization experience helps improve the nurse image. Therefore, for better improvement of nurse image, it is necessary for nurses to offer their best care to hospitalized patients. • Most human behaviors are based on self-perceptual image. Subjectivity in professional nursing image is shown in their opinions, beliefs, values, and attitudes of professional nursing and it helps to understand individual's behavior. This study was initiated to find the characteristics and patterns in subjectivity of hospital nurses' professional nursing image. The Data were collected from Apr. 20 to Aug. 22, 1996. The research method employed Q-methodology which is based on self-psychology and abductive logics. Analysis of Q-type obtained by QUANL pc program. The characteristics of professional nursing image was analyzed based on the typal array, extreme comments, and the subject's demographic information. The results revealed that there are three different types on the professional nursing image. The three types were named as follows : The first type, the Improvable, consisting of 6 subjects, preferentially perceived nursing is human behavior as life process, coordinating with other health personnel for the patients as nurses' important role. On the other hand, they are taking a little dissatisfied view of professional nursing image, which can be estimated to advance for the construction of the professional nursing image. The second type, the Self-conflicted, consisting of 13 subjects, who have the subjectivity of the image by focusing on external and environmental factors rather than developing positive individual nurses' image for their profession. They have very conflic-ting and self-degrading traits. The third type, the Affirmative, consisting of 10 subjects, who appreciate the essence of nursing, and that they highly perceived nurse' positive attitude, devotion, mature interrelationship and self-developing efforts etc. In conclusion, this study discovers three types on the professional nursing image and their relationship. By identifying the nature of three types, this study suggests that the results should be useful reinforcement tool in educating nursing students as well as in continuing education for hospital nurses.

In addition, 51 (21.2%) wore a cap (21.2%) and 12.0% were male. In the photographic scene, 69 (37.5%) portrayed nursing activities and 36 (19.6%) suggestiveness. In the suggestive photos, all of nurses were female (${\chi}^2=7.63$, p=.021) and they were more likely to have small frames (${\chi}^2=48.40$, p<.001) and wear caps (${\chi}^2=113.54$, p<.001) and skirts (${\chi}^2=39.96$, p<.001). Conclusion: This study showed that the photographs of the nurses wearing a cap and expressing the nurse as a sexual object still appeared. There is a need for a systematic image enhancement strategy so that actual images of nurses can be projected on the internet photographs.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the image of nurses portrayed on Korean TV dramas. Methods: Among the medical dramas aired on TV from 2000 to 2013, sixteen different Korean TV dramas were selected. For analyzing the dramas, 'the checklist for monitoring media images of nurses and nursing' was used after obtaining the permission from the original author. Two evaluators evaluated each drama and synchronized the final scores after comparing individual scores. Results: The roles of nurses were found to be such a supportive role (93.8%), and a professional role (75.0%). The nurses images portrayed on the selected TV drama included being kind, accountable, having humanism (81.2%), and professional insights (56.2%), whereas nurses's administrative role such as a manager were not represented. A half of scenes that nurses showed up, nurses were asking asking for help to doctors or other hospital administrators. Conclusion: Since TV dramas on air in Korea still underrepresented the roles of the professional nurses, providing the media with advice to improve the images of nurses is necessary in future. Concrete and sustainable strategies for improving nurses image are required.

  • Purpose: This study analyzed how the four nurse-related news items 'talent show,' 'neonatal death,' 'nurse's death,' and 'sexual harassment' were portrayed in Korean daily newspaper articles. Methods: A total of 392 newspaper articles published from November 2017 to May 2018 were retrieved through the internet homepages of three newspapers, the Chosun Ilbo, the Dong-a Ilbo, and the JoongAng Ilbo and through a database for 13 other newspapers. Articles were analyzed for their views on nurses and their structural and contextual frames. Results: Articles with the highest frequency of mentioning nurses' death appeared in the JoongAng Ilbo; these were written as straight news articles. In the analyzed articles, nurses were portrayed mostly as victims, troublemakers, passive, or selfish. Articles were written mostly in episodic, incident notice, or attribution of responsibility frames. Conclusion: It was not uncommon to read articles with negative views on nurses; most of these articles focused only the four major incidents as straight news type stories. Future efforts are needed to study the implications of newspaper articles with negative views on nurses and the frames most commonly used.
