Nursing Students' Experiences of Observing the Use of Physical Restraints: A Qualitative Study (간호대학생의 신체보호대 사용 관찰 경험: 질적 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of final-year undergraduate nursing students in observing the use of physical restraints on patients in the course of clinical practice. Methods: Three focus group interviews were conducted with 12 Korean nursing students who could provide sufficient information about their observation of physical restraints. The collected data was analyzed through conventional content analysis. Results: The data were classified into four theme clusters, and nine themes. The four theme clusters included 'recognized as an unavoidable means,' 'experienced problems with the use of physical restraints,' 'realized the importance of the nurse's role and efforts,' and 'aspire to learn about correct use of physical restraints.' While nursing students recognized the necessities and problems of using physical restraints in clinical practice, and the importance of nurses' role and effort, the results found that education related to the use of physical restraints should be more systematic within the nursing curriculum. Conclusion: This study highlights the necessity of educating nursing students to ensure they acquire accurate knowledge and awareness regarding the use of physical restraints, and suggests the inclusion of systematic guidelines through simulation or extracurricular activities.

Perceived image of nurses on major and non-major students (간호대 학생과 일반대 학생이 지각하는 간호사 이미지)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the perceived image of nurses on major and non-major students. Methods: The subjects were 120 nursing school students and 120 other university students in J province. The data was collected by using structured questionnaire. T-test, ANOVA were performed by SPSS/PC 20.0. Results: The score for image of nurses was as follows. special image($3.86{\pm}0.51$), traditional image($3.71{\pm}0.53$), individual image($3.53{\pm}0.85$), social image($3.43{\pm}0.58$), and grand mean($3.66{\pm}0.48$). Perceived image of nurses was significant difference between students of a major and non-major(t=6.390, p<.001). Conclusion: It is needed to monitoring of media for the improvement the perceived image of nurses and also nurses have to try to make an individual role model.

The Effects of Self-efficacy and Self-directed Learning Readiness to Self-leadership of Nursing Student (간호대학생의 자기효능감 및 자기주도학습준비도가 셀프리더십에 미치는 융복합적 영향)

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of self-efficacy and self-directed learning readiness to self-leadership of nursing students. The data of self-efficacy, self-directed learning readiness and self-leadership was collected for the nursing students of K university in K city from Sep. 2015 to Nov. 2015. The results show that self-efficacy is different according to subjects' age, and self-directed learning readiness is different according to the grade. The correlations among self-efficacy, self-directed learning readiness and self-leadership are significant, and the self-directed learning readiness is a significant predictor of self-leadership. It is expected that the nursing students will be able to act as a leader in clinical practice and health care by promoting self-directed learning readiness from the university education, and it is required to develop and operate the self-directed learning readiness program including the opinions of learners.

A Systematic Review of the Virtual Reality Program for Dementia Education (치매교육을 위한 가상현실 프로그램에 대한 체계적 고찰)

  • This study is a systematic review study to confirm the characteristics, effects, and application strategies of domestic and foreign virtual reality programs provided by dementia education. This study is based on the literature published up to July 2020, CINAHL, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Pubmed electronic databases were used overseas, and RISS, KISS, and DBpia were searched in Korea. Based on the selection criteria and exclusion criteria, the final six papers were used for analysis. As a result of the analysis, the subjects of the selected literature were two informal caregivers (33.3%), one general (16.7%), and three students (50.0%) including nursing students and medical and pharmacy students. The virtual reality program was effective in a total of five areas(empathy ability, dementia attitude including knowledge and comfort of dementia, trust in own abilities, dyadic relationship scale), of which 75% of the studies measured empathy ability had significant effects. The results of this study confirm that virtual reality technology can be used for human-centered nursing based on empathy.

Difference between Medical Students and Nursing Students about Awareness and Attitude toward Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Medical Treatment (연명치료 중단 인식과 태도에 대한 의대생과 간호대생의 차이)

  • This study is a descriptive research to measure the awareness and attitude toward withdrawal of life-sustaining medical treatment (WLSMT) among medical and nursing students. The data collection was conducted between 8 October and 15 November 2018, and the responses of 240 students were analyzed. The analysis results are as follows. More than 95 percent of medical and nursing students said the WLSMT was necessary. The medical students answered that 'patient's will' is important and nursing student answered that 'patient and family's will' is important. The nursing student showed that "family will and decision" was more important than the medical student in deciding to discontinue life care. Based on the results of the study, continuous discussion on the development and application of education programs to form attitudes and awareness of the discontinuation of life-saving treatments based on correct values is needed for prospective medical students and nursing students.

A Study of Moral Judgment and Ethical Decision Making and Ethical Dilemmas Experienced in Practice by Nursing Students (간호대학생의 도덕판단력과 윤리적 의사결정 및 실습에서 경험한 윤리적 딜레마)

  • This study examined the moral judgments and ethical decision-making and analyzed ethical dilemmas experienced in practice by nursing students. The data were collected using self-reported questionnaires and reports from 189 college students in their 2nd ~ 4th grades. Data collection period was from Nov 6th - 20th in 2012. Each grade's P(%) scores were 47.92, 43.74, and 43.75 respectively.. For stage 4 score, each grade's scores were 22.37, 22.98, and 19.74. This result shows that, compared to juniors, senior student's P(%) scores did not drop and stage 4 scores rather decreased, which is in line with the results of previous studies about the effects of ethics education. This finding could be attributed to the regular and voluntary case presentations and discussions required for the senior participants. Regarding ethical decision-making type, the most favored was type 3(35.45%). Among seven categories of the ethical dilemmas facing the students, the most commonly reported was the patient's rights and dignity, followed by practices based on nursing standards, arranging for dying patients. This study raises the need that the curriculum is revised to encourage student's participation in the analysis of ethical issues they confront in the field.

College Women's Self-leadership, Stress of Clinical Practice and Self Disclosure in an Area (일 지역 간호대 학생의 셀프리더십, 임상실습 스트레스와 자기노출)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the degrees of and relationships between self-leadership, stress of clinical practice and self-disclosure in a group of college female students. Methods: Data were collected from 258 participants with self-report questionnaires in August, 2011. Results: There were significant differences in the level of 'self-leadership' depending on 'interpersonal relationships', 'application motivation', 'satisfaction with nursing as a major' and 'satisfaction in clinical practice'. And also there was significant difference in the level of 'self-disclosure' depending on 'interpersonal relationships'. But there was no significant difference in the level of 'stress of clinical practice' depending on general characteristics of participants. There were significant correlations between 'self-leadership' and self-disclosure, 'stress of clinical practice' and 'self-disclosure'. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that it is needed to develop diverse programs that can reduce the stress of clinical practice by strengthening the capacity of self-leadership and self-disclosure.

The Effectiveness of Disaster-related Educational Interventions in South Korea: A Systematic Literature Review (국내 간호사와 간호대학생에게 적용한 재난교육 프로그램의 효과 분석: 체계적 문헌고찰 연구)

  • The research purpose outlined emphasizes the growing need for systematic and professional disaster education for nurses and nursing students, driven by the increasing occurrence of natural and large-scale social disasters. The study, a systematic literature review, analyzed the effects of educational interventions in disaster education targeting this demographic. The research method involved a literature search in major Korean databases using keywords related to disaster, education programs, and simulations. The findings highlighted that most programs utilized a combination of theoretical lectures, simulations, and debriefing methods, with intervention times ranging from less than 2 hours to between 40 and 56 hours. The primary outcomes measured were disaster nursing preparedness and performance abilities, with the programs showing positive effects on variables such as disaster nursing readiness, performance ability, attitude, knowledge, awareness, learning self-efficacy, practice satisfaction, and confidence in disaster nursing. The study suggests the importance of designing programs that offer participants realistic learning experiences through diverse intervention times and methods and emphasizes the need to verify the effectiveness of these programs.

Validity and Reliability of a Clinical Performance Examination using Standardized Patients (호흡기계 표준화 환자를 이용한 간호대 학생의 임상수행능력평가 타당도와 신뢰도 검증)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to test the validity of a modified clinical performance examination (CPX) for preclinical students in nursing. Method: 70 nursing students in their second semester of the junior year at C University participated in CPX. Scenarios and checklists were developed by our research team from September to October 2005. Six stations were organized. Evaluation included physical examination of a patient with lung cancer, education on usage of a metered dosage inhaler, and lobectomy postoperative care. Students were randomly assigned to a station. Result: There was a difference in the CPX scores according to stations. The agreement of scoring between trained faculty members and SPs was more than moderate (r=.647). The correlation between the CPX score and the average grade in the previous semester and between the CPX score and the average grade of a paper and pen test of the pulmonary system of adults was low (r=.276; r=.048). Conclusion: Traditional CPX is generally recommended, however, modified CPX is appropriate for preclinical students in the current Korean Nursing school setting if there are additional scoring systems to balance the testing level at each station.

Comparisons of Nursing Skills, Self-Directed Learning Ability, and Problem Solving Competency, and Satisfaction by Learner-led vs. Faculty-led Fundamental Nursing Practice (학습자 주도와 교수자 주도 기본간호학실습에 따른 술기수행능력과 자기주도 학습능력, 문제해결능력, 실습만족도 비교)

  • This study was done to compare the effects of learner-led and faculty-led fundamental nursing practice on skill performance, self-directed learning, problem-solving competency, and satisfaction. The learner-led practice was consisted of pre-class open lab and peer supervision. The faculty-led practice was consisted of faculty supervision for a student individually without pre-class open lab. The study was a pre-posttest, non-synchronized, quasi-experimental design between two groups. Data from 134 nursing students in either faculty-led (n=54) or learner-led fundamental nursing practice group (n=80) was collected using a checklist and self-reported questionnaire. Nursing skill performance score and class satisfaction of the learner-led group were significantly higher than those of the faculty-led group. This study showed that learner-led fundamental nursing practice consisting of pre-class open lab and peer supervision was an efficient practice method to improve students' skill performance and satisfaction maintaining their self-directed learning ability and problem-solving competency.
