  • The model of load-strain relations for CFT stub columns subjected to centrally compressive axial load is shown in this paper. The modified model of concrete and steel is obtained by using the experimental data and the formulas of that is based on the foreign researcher's result. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the basic data for evaluating the behavior of CFT stub columns to be variable to the strength of concrete and steel.

  • The design standards, such as AISC-LRFD (2005) and KBC-2005, specify the maximum width-to-thickness ratio that can be used for computing the strength of the concrete-filled tube (CFT), and do not include any formula for computing the strength when the width-to-thickness ratio is over the limit. This paper proposes a strength equation for CFTs with a large width-to-thickness ratio by acknowledging the fact that the stiffened slender steel platehas substantial postbuckling strength, and that it therefore can be more economical to use it. The equation adopts the concept of effective width, which is very useful for plate analysis. By comparing the strengths of AISC2005, KBC2005, and the proposed method with the results of the experiment, where the width-to-thickness ratio was regarded as the main parameter, the applicability of the proposed method was verified.

  • Welded built-up square tubes are manufactured by flare welding at the center of the column width for cold-formed L-shaped four-piece plates and improved composite effect of concrete and steel by vertical inner anchor. Also, the axial resistance of concrete is increased by the thinness of the steel column, and the composite effect of concrete and steel prevents the steel column from local buckling. In this study, we introduced a manufacturing method of built-up square column steel square concrete-filled tubular column with vertical inner anchor and superior structural performance of the square stub column verified by the structural test for 15 specimens with parameters of shape of tube (built-up square tube, general steel tube), width over thickness of the steel tube (B/t=50, 58, 67) and the strength of concrete (f'c=10MPa, 50MPa).

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the yield stress of SM570TMC CFT column subject to axial force. These columns were evaluated and compared by statistical tests, during which the displacements and axial loads of column specimens were measured. Test results showed that the yield stress of CFT columns under axial load could be predicted using the previously proposed the yield stress of steel columns.

  • Concrete-filled steel tube(CFT) columns have become popular for building construction due to not only composite effect of steel tube and infilled concrete, but also more economical. The purpose of this paper is to propose the applicable boundary formula of width-to-thickness ratio for rectangular steel tube as using CFT column. A parametric study was performed taking width-to-thickness ratio of rectangular steel tube and compressive strength of concrete as the main parameter. The strength of concrete are selected to 30, 60, 90MPa. The non-linear analysis was adopted in order to take into account the effect of concrete strength. Finally, from the test and analysis results, the effect of increasing strength according to concrete strength and width-to-thickness of steel tube and plastic behavior of specimens were verified distinctly.

  • In this paper, 18 square CFT columns filled with high-strength concrete were tested under concentric or eccentric axial loading. Two parameters of the experimental program included the buckling length-section depth ratio ($L_K$/D) and the eccentricity of the appled compressive load (e). In additon, mechanical properties such as the compressive concrete strength and compressive and tensile steel strength were measured and incorporated into the material models for the stress-strain relationships of concrete and steel. This model was used in an elasto-plastic analysis in order to predict the behavior of the slender CFT columns. Observtions of the failure mode during the tests under axial loadig were also presented. The strengths obtained from the analysis. Recommendations for Design, and Constructions of CFT structures were presented, as verified by the experimental results.

  • The CFT columns used in thin-walled steel tubes can be more economical, because it was expected the increase of strength by restriction for the local buckling of steel tubes. The purpose of this paper is to review feasibility of existing design formula and verify the applicability limit of width-to-thickness ratio for increasing the strength of rectangular CFT columns. As the main parameters of experiments, width-to-thickness ratios of steel tube, height of rectangular concrete columns, and concrete filled or not. The strength of concrete are selected to 90MPa. From the test results, the confinement effect of steel tube on the compressive strength of infilled concrete is remarkably appeared in the thin-walled rectangular steel tube columns infilled wih high strength concrete. By the non-linear analysis, the axial strength from experiment result was given higher than analysis result for all CFT stub columns.

  • The concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) that has an excellent performance can be more economically used when the steel tube has a large width-to-thickness ratio. However, the international provisions such as American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) limit the use of a slender plate in CFT members, resulting in a less optimal use of CFT. This study verifies the post buckling strength of CFT columns through the experimental program for Hollow Steel Sections (HSS) and CFTs with a with-to-thickness ratio ranged 60 to 100. The study also proposes a relaxed limitations of with-to-thickness ratio compared to the one specified in the current standards.

  • This paper presents the experimental results of behavior of square CFT columns with large the width-ro thickness ratio strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets subjected to concentrated axial loading. The main parameters were b/t ratio and the number of CFRP layers and 6 specimens were fabricated. The values of b/t were ranged from 60 to 100. From the tests, Maximum increase of 16% was also achieved in axial-load capacity with three transverse layered CFRP applied on four sides of steel tubes. The load capacity decreased up to 41% comparing with nominal load capacity of unstrengthened CFT column. However, for CFRP strengthened CFT, the load capacity decreased up to 32%. Finally, from the load-strain relationships, the local buckling occurred before yield point of steel tubes. Also, from the load-strain relationships, it was observed that local buckling were delayed on CFT columns by CFRP sheets retrofitting.
