In this study, based on the general reasoning that the higher the resolution of the HMD, the greater the presence and immersion of the audience and the greater the presence experience, the difference in the presence experience according to the resolution of the virtual reality device is verified empirically Presence effect. To do this, 300 college students were included in the population, and VR simulations of the Oculus store were conducted using HMD and mobile devices with different resolutions (HD, FHD, WQHD) as stimuli. As a result, there was a significant difference in the presence experience of the audience according to the resolution of the mobile device attached to the virtual reality HMD, and the presence effect had a significant influence on the awakening. On the other hand, no significant influence was found in the effect of emotion. Therefore, we can prove a general reasoning hypothesis that the higher the resolution of the virtual reality device, the greater the presence experience of the audience. However, since the confounding effect and the impression are contradictory in the presence effect side, additional experiments research is required.
Objectives : Although the Attention Network Test(ANT) has been widely used to assess selective attention including alerting, orienting, and conflict processing, data on its test-retest reliability are lacking for clinical population. The objective of the current study was to investigate test-retest reliability of the ANT in healthy controls and patients with schizophrenia. Methods : Fourteen patients with schizophrenia and 23 healthy controls participated in the study. They are tested with ANT twice with 1 week interval. Test-retest reliability was analyzed with Pearson and Intra-class correlations. Results : Patients with schizophrenia showed high test-retest correlations for mean reaction time, orienting effect, and conflict effect. Also, they showed moderate to high test-retest correlations for mean accuracy and moderate test-retest correlations for alerting effect and conflict error rate. On the other hand, healthy controls revealed high test-retest correlations for mean reaction time and moderate to high test-retest correlations for conflict error rate. In addition, they revealed moderate test-retest correlations for alert effect, orienting effect, and conflict effect. Conclusions : The mean reaction time, alerting effect, orienting effect, conflict effect, and conflict error rate of ANT showed acceptable test-retest reliabilities in healthy controls as well as patient with schizophrenia. Therefore, the analyses of these reliable measures of ANT are recommended for case-control studies in patients with schizophrenia.
To know the ecological pattern of bulrush (Scirpus juncoides) seeds in dormancy-breaking responses as affected by different ripening processes, storage conditions, germination conditions, and some of known chemicals concerned, the study was conducted. Among other conditions detected, the burial in 2 cm depth paddy soil, $5^{\circ}C$ storage temperature, pre-maturing process (Green color), high concentration of chemicals used, and flooding paddy surfaces were the most efficient conditions for bulrush seeds to break dormancy and germinate, respectively.
Objectives : Insomnia is significantly influenced by the pre-sleep arousal, self efficacy, sleep hygiene, depression and anxiety. The authors tried to explore how these factors are related with the clinical features of sleep. Methods : Fifty three patients diagnosed as insomnia by DSM-IV criteria were studied. They filled up the pre-sleep arousal scale(PSAS), sleep efficacy scale(SES), sleep hygiene awareness and practice scale, BDI, and state and trait anxiety scales. Results: 1) The mean values of sleep-related variables were as follows : Sleep latency,136.89 minutes ; frequences of awakening during a night, 2.28 ; minutes to get back to sleep, 42.70 ; total sleep time, 180.19 minutes ; duration of illness, 72.00 months. 2) The mean scores of scales were as follows : PSAS(cognitive), 22.40 ; PSAS(somatic), 17.32 ; SES, 20.16 ; sleep hygiene knowledge, 25.96 ; caffein knowledge, 59.78 ; sleep hygiene practice, 42.12 ; BDI. 18.2 ; state anxiety, 41.24 ; trait anxiety ; 44.50. 3) In the subjects with superimposed depression, the mean frequency of awakening during a night and the mean pre-sleep arousal scale score were higher than in those without depression. 4) Frequency of awakening were correlated positively with a PSAS(a tight tense feeling in your muscle) and sleep hygiene awareness. PSAS(cognitive) were correlated positively with a PSAS(somatic). BDI correlated positively with a PSAS item(a jittery, nervous feeling in your body)and a SES item (not allow a poor night's sleep to interfere with daily activities). Anxiety scales were correlated positively with sleep hygiene practice scale sleep, and PSAS were correlated negatively with SES. Conclusions : The mean scores of PSAS, SES, sleep hygiene awareness and practice scale, BDI, state and trait anxiety scales of insomniacs were correlated either positively or negatively in insomnia patients. These factors seem to contribute to the development and maintainence of insomnia.
The snake detection theory posits that, due to competition with snakes, the primate visual system has been evolved to detect camouflaged snakes. Specifically, one of its hypotheses states that the subcortical visual pathway mainly consisting of koniocellular cells enables humans to automatically detect the threat of snakes without consuming mental resources. Here we tested the hypothesis by comparing human participants' responses to snakes with those to fearful faces and flowers. Participants viewed either original images or converted ones, which lacked the differences in color, luminance, contrast, and spatial frequency energies between categories. While participants in Experiment 1 produced valence and arousal ratings to each image, those in Experiment 2 detected target images in the breaking continuous flash suppression (bCFS) paradigm. As a result, visual factors influenced the responses to snakes most strongly. After minimizing visual differences, snakes were rated as being less negative and less arousing, and detected more slowly from suppression. In contrast, the images of the other categories were less affected by image conversion. In particular, fearful faces were rated as greater threats and detected more quickly than other categories. In addition, for snakes, changes in arousal ratings and those in bCFS response times were negatively correlated: Those snake images, the arousal ratings of which decreased, produced increased detection latency. These findings suggest that the influence of snakes on human responses to threat is limited relative to fearful faces, and that detection responses in bCFS share common processing mechanisms with conscious ratings. In conclusion, the current study calls into question the assumption that snake detection in humans is a product of unconscious subcortical visual processing.
Storytelling advertising is one of the most popular ad types in marketing field. However, there has been little attention to storytelling ads in consumer and advertising research. To examine the effectiveness of different types of advertising, this study collected 9 commertial ads, which consisted of 3 advertising types(storytelling, informative, image) ${\times}$ 3 products(digital camera, coffee, health drink). We investigated the differences in emotions after ads and arousal level, as well as the advertising effectiveness among the three types of advertising. Preliminary analysis revealed that the emotions after ads could classified into two distinct emotion types, affective emotions and cognitive emotions, and we used the two emotion types as emotions after ads to simplify the results. The results indicate that the storytelling ads are more effective than the image ads, but this power of storytelling ads may not be found in the comparison with informative ads. It is also found that storytelling ads can help form a more positive attitude for males than for females, whereas image ads can have an more impact on females than males. In addition, it can be proposed that affective emotions after ads may play an important role in the effectiveness of advertising types, but the interaction effects of advertising types and gender may depend on the cognitive emotions after ads.
This study examined affective representation by analyzing physiological responses measured using wearable devices and affective ratings in response to emotional videos. To achieve this aim, a published dataset was reanalyzed using multidimensional scaling to demonstrate affective representation in two dimensions. Cross-participant classification was also conducted to identify the consistency of emotional responses across participants. The accuracy and misclassification in each emotional condition were described by exploring the confusion matrix derived from the classification analysis. Multidimensional scaling revealed that the represented objects, namely, emotional videos, were positioned along the rated valence and arousal vectors, supporting the core affect theory (Russell, 1980). Vector fittings of physiological responses also showed the associations between heart rate acceleration and low arousal, increased heart rate variability and negative and high arousal, and increased electrodermal activity and negative and low arousal. Using the data of behavioral and physiological responses across participants, the classification results revealed that emotional videos were more accurately classified than the chance level of classification. The confusion matrix showed that awe, enthusiasm, and liking, which were categorized as positive, low arousal emotions in this study, were less accurately classified than the other emotions and were misclassified for each other. Through multivariate analyses, this study confirms the core affect theory using physiological responses measured through wearable devices and affective ratings in response to emotional videos.
Previous studies on opinion mining and sentiment analysis have supposed that the polarity and value of an emotional word is reversed when a negation word is attached. However, there are no quantitative studies on how much the polarity is changed when a negation word is following. Therefore, we measured the valence and arousal dimensions for Korean emotional words and their negations. Consequently, the polarity of valence and arousal was reversed on their intermediate level. Also, the value was reduced by about 30% to 50%. We propose this result as a guideline for processing negation words for studies on opinion mining and sentiment analysis.
In this paper, we verify the relation between elements (active and inactive) of Russell's emotional dimension ("A Circumplex Model") to propose a new representing method. Russell's emotional dimension expresses emotional words (happy, joy, sad, nervous, etc.) as a point on the two dimensions (Arousal and Valence). It is most commonly used in many filed such as Science of Emotion & Sensibility, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), and Psychology etc. But other researchers have insisted that Russell's emotional dimension have to be modified because of its inherent problems. Such problems included the possibility of mixed feelings, the difference of emotion and sensibility, and the difference of Arousal axis and Valence axis. Therefore, we verify relationship of A Circumplex Model's elements (active and inactive) and find how to people express their Arousal feelings using survey. We finally propose new method to express emotion in Russell's emotional dimension. Using this method, we can solve Russell's problems and compensate other researches.
Background: The existing data indicate that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome contributes to the development of cardiovascular dysfunction such as systemic hypertension and cardiac arrhythmias, and the cardiovascular dysfunction has a major effect on high long-term mortality rate in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients. To a large extent the various studies have helped to clarify the pathophysiology of obstructive sleep apnea, but many basic questions still remain unanswered. Methods: In this study, the influence of obstructive sleep apnea on systemic blood pressure, cardiac rhythm and urinary catecholamines concentration was evaluated. Over-night polysomnography, 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure and ECG monitoring, and measurement of urinary catecholamines, norepinephrine (UNE) and epinephrine (UEP), during waking and sleep were undertaken in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients group (OSAS, n=29) and control group (Control, n=25). Results: 1) In OSAS and Control, UNE and UEP concentrations during sleep were significantly lower than during waking (P<0.01). In UNE concentrations during sleep, OSAS showed higher levels compare to Control (P<0.05). 2) In OSAS, there was a increasing tendency of the number of non-dipper of nocturnal blood pressure compare to Control (P=0.089). 3) In both group (n=54), mean systolic blood pressure during waking and sleep showed significant correlation with polysomnographic data including apnea index (AI), apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), arterial oxygen saturation nadir ($SaO_2$ nadir) and degree of oxygen desaturation (DOD). And UNE concentrations during sleep were correlated with AI, AHI, $SaO_2$ nadir, DOD and mean diastolic blood pressure during sleep. 4) In OSAS with AI>20 (n==14), there was a significant difference of heart rates before, during and after apneic events (P<0.01), and these changes of heart rates were correlated with the duration of apnea (P<0.01). The difference of heart rates between apneic and postapneic period (${\Delta}HR$) was significantly correlated with the difference of arterial oxygen saturation between before and after apneic event (${\Delta}SaO_2$) (r=0.223, P<0.001). 5) There was no significant difference in the incidence of cardiac arrhythmias between OSAS and Control In Control, the incidence of ventricular ectopy during sleep was significantly lower than during waking. But in OSAS, there was no difference between during waking and sleep. Conclusion : These results suggested that recurrent hypoxia and arousals from sleep in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome may increase sympathetic nervous system activity, and recurrent hypoxia and increased sympathetic nervous system activity could contribute to the development of cardiovascular dysfunction including the changes of systemic blood pressure and cardiac function.
