  • This study was conducted to provide basic data for prioritization of family support services by examining the importance and performance of family support for parents of children with special education. To achieve the purpose of the study, a questionnaire survey was conducted with 220 parents of children from special education nationwide. As a result of the study, the importance of all 29 family support service items was rated high, but the performance level was low, and statistically significant differences were found. In addition, as a result of analysis of importance and performance, family support services related to physical and physical well-being and disability-related support were evaluated as high-priority, low-practice services, and it was a task that should be presented as a priority in family support services. On the other hand, it was found that family support services in the areas of family interaction support or emotional well-being were considered to be services that should be avoided due to their low importance but high performance. Based on the results of these studies, the direction for the operation of family support services for children with special education needs to be suggested in the future.

  • This study was conducted to determine how the family relationships of the middle-aged affect their life satisfaction and how family support services regulate the association between the two factors. A total of 8,695 middle-aged residents(aged 50 to 64 years) were chosen from among resident-respondents of the needs survey administered to establish the 4th local social security plan in Gyeonggi-do. The moderating effect of family support services on the relation between family relationship difficulties and life satisfaction was investigated. The analysis showed that the life satisfaction experienced by the middle-aged is slightly higher than the middle level. The lower the difficulty in family relationships, the higher the use of family support services, the more women than men, and the better the economy, the higher the life satisfaction of middle-aged. As a moderating variable, family support services significantly moderate the effects of family relationship difficulties experienced by the middle-aged on life satisfaction. The results are meaningful in that they comprehensively shed light on the difficulties that confront family relationships and the relationship structure of family support services, thereby contributing to the search for life satisfaction among the middle-aged in Gyeonggi-do.

The results are as follows. First, the domestic concerns of local residents were more related to 'difficulties in their children's education and care' compared to 'family relationship problems'. Second, although there is high awareness of family support centers, the overall utilization is very low, and utilization is high amongst families with special needs such as single-parent families, multi-cultural families, and kinship families. However, utilization was low amongst families without special needs. Third, the desired services varied by gender, age, education level, family structure, occupation, and income level. Therefore, there is a need for tailored service programs and promotion of Multicultural Family Support Center that reflects the needs of the diverse needs of local families.

For this study, nine such workers from three separate Family Centers and three such workers from two separate Adoption Agencies have (voluntarily) engaged in in-depth interviews. Major findings from the interviews are that the Family Centers were initially motivated to carry out adoption family programs for three principal reasons: they located many families (in need of adoption family program); potential adoptees were interested in the program; adoption families participated in the pre-existing programs such as Self-help Group and Co-parenting Space. For benefits of Family Centers as a delivery system, they mentioned nationwide infrastructure, family professional, and arrangement of integrated program for family. For improvements, they listed awareness education based on a thorough consideration of adoptee's varied characteristics, close cooperation with adoption institutions, provision of basic operational manual from Korean Institute for Healthy Family, and governmental efforts to enlarge the consideration pool for families.

  • Despite the amount of government budget and resources used for female immigrants who married Korean spouses, it has not been evaluated yet whether the services designed for the immigrants are actually delivered to potential users with social needs. This study is an attempt to identify moderating factors associated with perceived needs and utilizing services of the Multicultural Family Support Centers. The National Survey on Multicultural Families 2015 is used for the analysis. Findings are as follows: the immigrant with better Korean communication skills would use the center services more when they have needs; the immigrants who lack skills were more likely to use center services in spite of the needs. Secondly, the more female spouses satisfied with their marriages, they were less likely to use the services; however, the moderating effect was not significant, On the other hand, Korean male spouses' patriarchal attitude was statistically significant. According to the results, practical and political implications were suggested.
