New Life Style Based on the Changes in Living Conditions in Korea (한국에서의 생활환경의 변화에 따른 새로운 생활모습)

  • There are several changes of living conditions in Korea during the past 40 years. The changes in living conditions are the change of family type, the increase in income, the aging society, the introduction of five-working day, the protection of environment, etc. These changes bring about a social phenomenon so-called the well-being which seek after the pleasure of healthy life. This study is based on the limited literature reviews, focusing on the correct understanding these changes and the well-being life style in Korea in order to provide the enterprise with some insights.

Life Changes and Subjective Well-being among the Oldest Old (초고령 노인의 삶의 변화와 안녕감에 관한 연구 : 80대 노인을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore life changes and subjective well-being among the oldest-old and to analyze the relationship between life changes and their subjective well-being. For these purposes, eight participants who fell under the oldest-old group (octogenarian) were recruited by using purposeful sampling. For the qualitative case study, data were collected through in-depth, individual interviews. Data were coded into themes and sub-themes. Key findings are as follows; First, poor physical health, lower economic activity, and isolation from family were identified as major changes in life among the oldest-old. Second, their subjective well-being appeared to be stable over time. However, resigned attitude toward their life was also coexisting. Some participants described their lives as 'the hopeless time' or 'no more goals to achieve.' Third, subjective well-being of the participants was strongly associated with positive family relationship and self-esteem. Finally, 'dynamic and adverse changes of life', 'positive family relationships', and 'acceptance and self-transcendence' were emerged as main themes through thematic analysis. Implications for social work practice and policy were discussed based on the study findings.

Transition of the Korean Rural Society: On the Basis of Population and Family Changes (한국 농촌사회의 변천: 농촌 인구와 가족의 변화를 중심으로)

  • We have approached this study on the basis of population and family changes. We have selected two suburban and two general rural areas for this research. The suburban rural areas are located next to Chungju City, which is the biggest city in Chungbuk Province, and the residents are able to commute to Chungju. The general rural areas are located in Boeun Gun, which is a typical agricultural county in Chungbuk Province. We have conducted two round surveys at the research areas: 1995-1996 for the first round and 1999-2000 for the second round surveys. Since the surveys were completed ones interviewed by enumerators, we have used the survey data directly for the analysis by year and region. The population structure by age and sex in general rural areas is shaped as a reverse triangle, which is becoming more serious because of the continuing emigration of young generation. Most of the young generation moves to the urban areas and their old parents only are left in their hometown, rural areas. When the parents become old and die, the number of households in the areas decreases rapidly. If there are no more new family formations, therefore, the rural society itself would cease to exist in near future. However, the situation of suburban rural areas was a different case. Although the rural young generation has moved to urban areas, other young age groups have moved into the areas with their small enterprises and for the low living costs. The original residents become older and the young age groups are replaced with the new immigrants continuously. Therefore, the traditional agricultural society will be replaced with a non-agricultural society, which will have more characteristics of urban areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the trend of changes in household labor among middle-aged generations who are facing dynamic changes in the middle of their life cycle. The research method is a literature study that examines and analyzes related data. Specifically, it aims to analyze the basic characteristics of middle-aged generations and trends in household labor, which are revealed through Time Use Survey, market trend reports, newspaper articles, and books. From the perspective of family resource management, housework is an unpaid activity performed by and for family members, and is an activity that can be replaced by purchasing goods or services from the market. This study focuses on the rapid growth of the home appliance market that replaces housework with the development of technology after industrialization, and how the change of technology affected the efficiency of housework. In addition, the composition and characteristics of middle-aged generations greatly changed according to changes in family structure, form, and family value. Examining the current state of housework and changing trends of middle-aged generations, which have different characteristics from previous generations, is significant in that it can predict future market trends and suggest implications for family policies that support the improvement of the quality of life of middle-aged generations.

A Study on the Relationship between Changes in Family Life due to COVID-19, Daily Stress, Work-Family Balance Conflict and Job Satisfaction of Married Working Women (기혼 직장여성의 코로나 19로 인한 가족생활 변화와 일상스트레스, 일-가정양립갈등 그리고 직무만족도 간의 관계에 관한 연구)

  • This study analyzed the relationships between changes in family life due to COVID-19, daily stress, work-family balance conflict and the job satisfaction of married working women. The subjects of this study were 1,934 married women wage workers who were extracted from the data of the 8th year of the female family panel survey surveyed in 2020. Path analysis was conducted to analyze the hypothesis using AMOS 21.0. The study results revealed that family life change doesn't directly affect work-family balance conflict, but increases job satisfaction. But family life change indrectly affects increasing work-family balance conflict and decreasing job satisfaction through daily stress. And daily stress affects increasing work-family balance conflict and decreasing job satisfaction. Additionally work-family balance conflict has an effect on reducing job satisfaction. Based on the results, practice and policy suggestions were made to reduce work-family balance conflict and increase job satisfaction of married working women.

Nurse's Experience of Changing Role in the Hospice Unit of Medical Ward (호스피스병동 간호사의 역할 변화 경험)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to investigate various role changes of nurses who have cared both medical cases and hospice patients and what they experienced. Methods: Focus group interviews were done 3 times and participants were 12 nurses who have worked in the hospice unit of medical ward. Results: Role changes in 4 areas such as holistic care, end-of-life care, care fur rare givers, and coordination of hospice team were reported by the participants. What they felt were as follows : fear, confusion, maturation, increasingly labor, regret, accomplishment, sympathy and depression. Conclusion: Although hospice care in general medical ward added extra tasks, it helped clinical nurses recover professional identity and led to growth of nursing by acquiring new knowledge and skill in hospice care.

Trends in the Household Labor Time of Korean Adults by Gender and Generation over the Last 20 Years (1999-2019) (한국 여성과 남성의 세대별 가사노동시간의 변화(1999-2019) : 가정관리 및 가족돌봄 시간을 중심으로)

  • The concept of household labor is composed of housework and family care, and it provides a framework for understanding daily life from the perspective of work-life balance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the household labor time of Korean adults by gender and generation over the last 20 years. Data was taken from the five Statistics Korea Life Time Surveys from 1999 (t1) to 2019 (t5) (n=69,196). The major results are as follows: first, gender and generation were found to have a significant relationship with household labor time over the study period. Household labor time for females was 3.8 times that of males in 1999, but females' household labor time decreased over the next 20 years while males' increased, including both housework and family care. The female participation rate in household work also remained steady, while that for males increased. Second, in the younger and middle generations, a similar gender and generational pattern was seen. Third, in the older generation, household time and participation rates for both females and males increased. The family welfare policy and theoretical implications of these results are discussed.

  • This empirical research mainly investigates the relationship between work-family conflict and organizational performance. Three key variables apply for the empirical research; work-family conflict, organizational performance, and family-friendly HR practices. A total of 230 questionnaires is collected from mid-sized companies for hypothesis testing. The empirical analysis shows that work-life balance has a great importance on workers' job satisfaction and intention to leave. The family-friendly HR practices play a moderating role between work-family conflict and organizational performance. The findings support the fact that achieving work-life balance enhances organizational performance and using family-friendly HR practices is an ideal for balancing between work- and family life.

  • Animation is a popular art in the form of enlightenment that intimately approaches people of various ages and makes them reconsider the social problems they have ignored. Therefore, this paper analyzes how the character setting and formative symbolism in "The Willoughbys" raise awareness of social agendas. The previous studies found that the modern society needs to be aware of child abuse and various types of family, and examined that color and formativeness of animation induce psychological and behavior change from the audience. The work shows emotional abuse and neglect as characters, and presents the subdivided form of the family. The rainbow symbolizes diverse family members. The agents with visual characteristics express the modern principle-based secondary perpetrator along with apathetic neighbors to urge a change in audience perception. This paper insists the value of animation when it is essential to raise public awareness prior to the construction of a welfare society and support system.

A Biographical Reconstruction of the Process Involving Changes in Elderly Support: From the Perspective of the Rural Elderly (노인부양의 변화과정에 대한 생애사적 재구성 - 농촌노인의 관점을 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of the current research is to reconstruct the process in which changes in elderly support take place from the perspective of the elderly in rural areas. Six elderly couples were interviewed three times with the use of Schütze's 'autobiographical-narrative interview'. The entire interviews consisted of 17 sessions. Interviewed data was analyzed, following the method of Schütze's 'autobiographical-narrative interview analysis'. Research findings were as follows: Elderly support as experienced by the current elderly couples is mainly 'family support', which turned out to be 'dual structural shift' in the process of modernization. That is, there has been an 'internal structural shift' from 'family support on intergenerational, mutual support dimension' to 'family support on intragenerational self-support dimension' on the one hand. An 'external structural shift' has been noticed that realizes the 'socialization of family support' on the other hand. Additionally, a 'discrepancy' was captured between support norm and support behavior as occurred in the process of 'dual structural shift'. Perception on the 'dual structural shift' has proven 'ambivalent'. On the basis of these results, a critical discussion of modernization theory ensued, along with some implications for practice.
