  • Objectives : Neurological soft signs have been regarded as endophenotypes associated with the genetic basis of schizophrenia. This study was to investigate the intra-familial correlations of the neurological soft signs according to their genetic loading. Methods : Schizophrenic patients(N=14) were included, who had one parent with a family history of schizophrenia and the other without it. Genetic loading was determined by the patient's family history of schizophrenia using the Family Interview for Genetic Studies(FIGS). These parents were subdivided into two groups. The first group was designated as 'presumed carriers'(N=9) of genetic loading, who had one or more schizophreic firstor second-degree relatives. The second group was designated as 'presumed non-carriers'(N=11) of genetic loading, who had no schizophrenic first- or second-degree relatives. Normal controls(N=12) consisted of people without schizophrenic relatives. NSS were evaluated using the Neurological Evaluation Scale-Korean Version (NES-K), and the intra-familial correlations of NSS were tested using the Intra-Class Coefficients(ICC) method. Results : The scores of Motor Coordination subdimension of NES-K were significantly correlated between the patients and their presumed carriers(ICC=.804, p=.016), but not significantly correlated between the patients and their presumed noncarriers. In other subdimensions of NES-K, no significant correlation were found between the patients and their parents regardless of the genetic loading. But, there were no statistically significant differences in the scores of Motor Coordination subdimension of NES-K between the patients and controls. Conclusion : This study did not prove that the neurological soft signs might be an endophenotype of schizophrenia that cosegregate with the genetic loading. The future study using more subjects than this would be needed.

  • The typical Kinetic Family Drawing (KFD) Web database system, a form of prototype system, has been developed, relying on the suggestions from family art therapists, with an aim to handle large amounts of assessment data and to facilitate effective implement of assessment activities. However, unfortunately such a system has an intrinsic problem that it fails to collect clients' behaviors, attitudes, facial expressions, voices, and other critical information observed while they are drawing. Accordingly we propose the ontology based video event analysis and video retrieval system in this paper, in order to enhance the function of a KFD Web database system by using a web camera and drawing tool. More specifically, a newly proposed system is designed to deliver two kinds of services: the client video retrieval service and the sketch video retrieval service, accompanied by a summary report of occurred events and dynamic behaviors relative to each family member object, respectively. The proposed system can support the reinforced KFD assessments by providing quantitative and subjective information on clients' working attitudes and behaviors, and KFD preparation processes.

  • This study aims to provide lesson plans that can simultaneously achieve both the learning goals of the 'Human Development & Family' domain of the 2015 revised Technology & Home Economics curriculum and the Sustainable Development Goals. Four steps including analysis, design, development, and evaluation and revision were followed. In the analysis step, the 'Changing Families and Healthy Families' unit was selected as it is relevant to the nine subgoals of the SDGs. In the design step, three sessions were planned with a problem-solving project approach. In the development step, three lesson plans for each session, individual and group activity worksheets for students, and guidelines for teachers were constructed. In the evaluation and revision step, criteria for evaluating the lesson plans were developed reflecting both the goals of the Home Economic curriculum and the SDGs. The validity of the lesson plans was reviewed by a panel of experts. Then, the revised lesson plans were finalized. This study provides an illustrative example of the lesson plans in the secondary education context that can be used to achieve the learning goals of the Home Economic curriculum and the Sustainable Development Goals at the same time.

  • This study is aimed at investigating the effects of school violence on adolescent depression and suicide, where both the mediating effects of resilency and the gender diffences are considered. The data, collected from 664 high and middle school students, were examined by the statistics software SPSS 17.0 and AMOS 17.0, in which descriptive statistics, factor analysis, structural equation model analysis, and multi-group simultaneous analysis are utilized. As a result, it is shown from the structural equation modeling that school violence have positive effects on depression and suicide, but negative effects on family and academic resiliency. Both ego and family resiliency act as protective factors, negatively affecting the depression. In addition, the family resiliency had negative effects on suicide. The results of multi-group simultaneous analysis imply that school violence have different effects on suicide and family resiliency respectively, depending on gender differences. Female adolescents are affected more strongly than male adolescents.

  • This study aims to examine the suggestions by studies that family predictors are related to developmental outcomes more strongly for children reared principally by their parents compared to those with extensive child care experience. Zero-order correlations between family predictors and developmental outcomes were conducted and the significance of differences in correlation coefficients between the two child care groups were examined. There was no evidence that there exist systematic differences between the two groups in predictive power of family factors except a few exceptions. At 2 years, social parenting style was more strongly associated with communication ability in the extensive child care group. At 3 years, some HOME subscales were related to a child's expressive and receptive vocabulary skills in significantly greater magnitudes in the mother care group. The findings also implied the potential contribution of child care environment on developmental outcomes for those who spend extensive hours in nonmaternal care.
