  • This study was to investigate the effects of percussion program on depression and self-esteem for the elderly lived in residential care. 12 older adults participated in the 40-min. percussion program for 4 weeks(10 sessions). The percussion program consisted of three steps; 1) introduction for creating rapport and relationship, 2) process for mood induction and increasing interaction, and ending for increasing self-achievement and confirming the changed mood. Korean Geriatric Depression Scale (KGDS) and Self-Esteem Scale (SES) were administered before the first session and after the completion of the program. Results showed statistical significance (p<.05) in KGDS (p=.020) and SES (p=.025). Findings imply that percussion program can induce positive changes in depression and self-esteem for elderly in the residential care, and more depressed elderly group may have better outcome in percussion playing. Future studies should consider various levels of depression among elderly, and design the program to be more sensitive to the level of functioning.

Study design was quasi-experimental pre-post test design. Control group(15 person) was treated decubitus wound with traditional dry gauze dressing, and experimental group(17 persons) was treated decubitus ulcer with occlusive dressing with hydrocolloid and calcium alginate(17 persons). Study period was from 8/1/97 to 12/31/97. Subject subjects was 17 males and 15 females with 2nd phase over decubitus ulcer aged 30 to 70 who have been registered as home care nursing clients in Nurse's Association in Seoul city. Outcome variables were stages, size of decubitus ulcer, pain at dressing time and exudate amount. Study result as follows. Occlusive dressing with hydrocolloid was superior to traditional gauze dressing decreasing ulcer size and phase, and shortening treatment period. Dressing change of occlusive dressing was easier than that of traditional gauze dressing. In conclusion, occlusive dressing was recommended to treat decubitus ulcer in home care patients even if hydrocolloid is expensive to gauze dressing because of treatment effect and easeness of dressing.

  • Purpose: This study investigated evidence for the effects of community-based cognitive rehabilitation programs for demented elderly. Methods: The literature review covered studies between 2004 and 2014, and searched international databases including Ovid-MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. The Risk of Bias Assessment Tool for Non-Randomized Studies was used by two reviewers to evaluate independently the quality of the selected articles. Results: Eighteen studies were selected through a systematic search of the literature. About three quarters of the studies showed that the community-based cognitive rehabilitation programs provided by nurses were significantly effective in enhancing cognition among elderly individuals with dementia. Conclusion: Based on these results, we suggest that nurse is an appropriate profession to manage cognitive rehabilitation or cognitive enhancement programs for demented elderly individuals. Therefore, the current system in which caregivers provide cognitive rehabilitation programs for demented elderly individuals must be reformed.

  • Purpose: This study sought to develop a scale to evaluate patient-centered healthcare services at hospitals and verify its reliability and validity. Methods: We conducted a literature review and interviewed medical personnel and practitioners in medical institutions. We also conducted a content validation and preliminary survey of experts, including 40 preliminary items. We conducted the main survey among 240 medical institution workers to assess the validity and reliability of the preliminary measurement tool. Results: The validity and reliability of the scale were assessed by 29 items underlying six factors: ease of communication, continuity and extension of the hospital's role, stable environment, emotional support, respect for patients' values, and offer of information. Cronbach's α of the whole tool was .91, while the value of each factor ranged from .82 to .74, thereby verifying its reliability. Conclusion: The patient-centered healthcare services scale was identified as a tool appropriate for healthcare professionals. This tool will be useful in a diverse range of research on the development of educational programs for patient-centered healthcare services and the promotion of patient-centered causes.
