  • In this work, we present the comparison between $d_{31}\;and\;d_{33}$ mode characterization using the PZT micro-actuator for large displacement. The PZT micro-actuator consisted of Si, PZT, and Pt layer on SOI wafer. The electrode shapes were laminated and interdigitated for $d_{31}\;and\;d_{33}$ mode, respectively. In order to characterize the actuation mode, we measured the displacement using laser interferometer. The maximum displacement of d31 mode was $12.2{\mu}m$ at 10V, the actuation characterization of d31 was better than that of d33 mode. We estimated that displacement of d33 mode would be larger than that of d31 above 30V.

  • Compared to 31-mode rings, 33-mode rings are highly utilized as wide bandwidth underwater acoustic transducers because the electro-mechanical coupling and piezoelectric constant d are high. On the other hand, the 31-mode ring is an axial symmetry structure, so it is possible to model it as a simple two-dimensional asymmetrical model for numerical analysis, but the 33-mode ring requires a three-dimensional numerical analysis. That is, a lot of computing resources and computation time are required. In this study, the effective material properties of an equivalent 31-mode ring were derived to simulate the electro-mechano-acoustical responses of the 33-mode ring transducer. Using the effective material properties derived from this study, a numerical analysis of rings in vacuum, air backed rings in water, and FFR (Free Flooded Ring) transducers were performed to compare the responses of 33-mode rings.

  • In this paper, we have designed a mode size converter to reduce coupling loss between super-high delta silica optical waveguides and single mode fibers. The new mode size converter has three design aspects; periodically segmented taper waveguide for minimal size, lateral taper waveguide for simple fabrication, and surrounding trenches to improve coupling loss. In the optimal mode size converter design, coupling loss is 0.33dB/point without trenches and 0.2dB/point with trenches.

  • In this paper, an 8bit CMOS low power, high-speed current-mode folding and interpolation A/D converter is designed with te LG semicon $0.8\mu\textrm{m}$ N-well single-poly/double-metal CMOS process to be integrated into a portable image signal processing system such as a digital camcoder. For good linearity and low power consumption, folding amplifiers and for high speed performance of the A/D converter, analog circuitries including folding block, current-mode interpolation circuit and current comparator are designed as a differential-mode. The fabricated 8 bit A/D converter occupies the active chip area of TEX>$2.2mm \times 1.6mm$ and shows DNL of $\pm0.2LSB$, INL of <$\pm0.5LSB$, conversion rate of 40M samples/s, and the measured maximum power dissipation of 33.6mW at single +5V supply voltage.

  • In this paper, we design a low noise amplifier to support ka-band satellite communication systems using 65-nm RFCMOS process. The proposed low noise amplifier is designed with high-gain mode and low-gain mode, and is designed to control the gain according to the magnitude of the input signal. In order to reduce the power consumption, the supply voltage of the entire circuit is limited to 1 V or less. We proposed the gain control circuit that consists of the inverter structure. The 3D EM simulator is used to reduce the size of the circuit. The size of the designed amplifier including pad is $0.33mm^2$. The fabricated amplifier has a -7 dB gain control range in 3 dB bandwidth and the reflection coefficient is less than -6 dB in high gain mode and less than -15 dB in low gain mode.

  • This paper reports a preliminary experimental investigation and characterization of an optical fiber-based submersion sensor system for applications in water flooding and leakage. The sensor system comprises a multi-mode fiber spliced with fiber Bragg grating and an intensity-based interrogator. Submersion tests were conducted in water-air and Glycerin-air environments. By the refractive index of the fiber-probe surrounding materials, the reflectance and the detecting power level is determined. When the probe is dipped into the water, the optical output power dramatically decreases from -7.5dBm to -17.5dBm. But, the center of Bragg wavelength is not affected in spite of external material changes. Temporal response characteristics of the sensor system is investigated to verify the real-time reaction. When the probe is immersed into the liquid, there is no transition time.

  • In this paper, we investigated the characteristics of 4${\times}$4 thermo-optic switch using two mode interference(TMI) coupler. We designed this matrix switch by using a configuration which combines a double Mach- Zehnder interferometer(MZI) switching unit. The average extinction ratio and average excess loss of the 4${\times}$4 thermo-optic switch was 33.7dB, 0.29dB, respectively.

  • A power amplifier operating at 3.3 V has been developed for CDMA/AMPS dual-mode cellular phones. It consists of linear GaAs power MESFET's, a new gate bias control circuit, and an output matching circuit which prevents the drain terminal of the second MESF from generating the harmonics. The relationship between the intermodulation distortion and the spectral regrowth of the power amplifier has been investigated with gate bias by using the two-tone test method and the adjacent channel leakage power ratio (ACPR) method of CDMA signals. The dissipation power of the power amplifier with a gate bias control circuit is minimized to below 1000 mW in the range of the low power levels while satisfying the ACPR of less than -26 dBc for CDMA mode. The ACPR of the power amplifier is measured to be -33 dBc at a high output power of 26 dBm.

  • This paper proposes a half-mode substrate integrated waveguide (HMSIW) amplifier using lumped-element transition. The input and output impedances of this amplifier are matched by the lumped-element transition structure. This structure provides compact impedance and mode matching circuits between the HMSIW and a stand-alone amplifier. Surface mount technology inductors and capacitors are implemented to realize the lumped-element transition. A prototype of the proposed HMSIW amplifier shows 15 dB gain with 3 dB bandwidth of 4 to 7.05 GHz in a simulation and measurement.

  • In this work, the linear vibration characteristics of $90^{\circ}$ pipe bends and their cylindrical and toroidal shell components are studied. The finite element method, based on shear-deformation shell elements, is used to carry out a vibration analysis of metallic multiple $90^{\circ}$ mitred pipe bends. Single, double, and triple mitred bends are considered, as well as a smooth bend. Sample natural frequencies and mode shapes are given. To validate the procedure, comparison of the natural frequencies is made with existing results for cylindrical and toroidal shells. The influence of the multiplicity of the bend, the boundary conditions, and the various geometric parameters on the natural frequency is described. The differential quadrature method, based on classical shell theory, is used to study the vibration of components of these bends. Regression formulas are derived for cylindrical shells (straight pipes) with one or two oblique edges, and for sectorial toroidal shells (curved pipes, pipe elbows). Two types of support are considered for each case. The results given provide information about the vibration characteristics of pipe bends over a wide range of the geometric parameters.
