  • In this work, we present the comparison between $d_{31}\;and\;d_{33}$ mode characterization using the PZT micro-actuator for large displacement. The PZT micro-actuator consisted of Si, PZT, and Pt layer on SOI wafer. The electrode shapes were laminated and interdigitated for $d_{31}\;and\;d_{33}$ mode, respectively. In order to characterize the actuation mode, we measured the displacement using laser interferometer. The maximum displacement of d31 mode was $12.2{\mu}m$ at 10V, the actuation characterization of d31 was better than that of d33 mode. We estimated that displacement of d33 mode would be larger than that of d31 above 30V.

  • This paper is concerned with the development of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer IDEAL (InterDigitated Electrode Actuation Layer) using d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism of piezoelectric ceramic. Most of the thin piezoelectric actuators are operated with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. Many kinds of piezoelectric ceramic actuators are strived now to improve the actuation performance. One of efforts to improve performance of piezoceramic actuators is the research trying to develop an actuator using the piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ . The piezoelectric coefficient d$_{33}$ is almost twice larger than piezoelectric coefficient d$_{31}$ . Therefore, the induced strain of PZT thin layer with d$_{33}$ 3 actuation mechanism is bigger than that with d$_{31}$ actuation mechanism. The AFC(MIT) and LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$ which is developed by a research team of NASA Langley Research Center used d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism with surface interdigitated electrode to enhance its actuation performance. But their actuation mechanism is not perfect d$_{33}$ actuation mechanism since the interdigitated electrodes are placed at the surface of the actuation layer. In this research, the stacked ceramic thin actuation layer with imbedded interdigitated electrode is designed and manufactured. The actuation strain of stacked ceramic thin actuation layer is measured and compared with the actuation strain of the LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$. The comparison shows that the developed stacked ceramic thin actuation layer can produce 15% more actuation strain than LaRC-MFC$^{TM}$.> TM/.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of continuing work on VDT(video display terminal), therefore this study examined visual fatigue, unaided visual acuity, refractive error, accommodation and horizontal phoria of 152 subjects who did two hour long VDT work. For the ocular symptoms, the greatest number was tired eyes accounting for 45.71%. In the visual symptoms, blurred vision was the hightest rate of 80.39% and in case of systemic symptoms shoulder pain was 33.33% marked top ranking. The average of near visual acuity decresed almost 10% from 0.47 to 0.42, but refractive error increased about 0.10D to the direction of myopic shift. The amplitude of accommodation decreased approximately 0.72D from 7.46D to 6.74D. Accommodation facility was delayed from 2.27 second to 2.50 second, the amplitude of positive relative accommodation was decreased from 4.76D to 4.16D and the amplitude of negative relative accommodation was decreased from 2.46D to 2.33D. The horizontal phoria shifted to the direction of esophoria from $1.82{\Delta}$ to $3.24{\Delta}$.

  • Local heat transfer coefficients were measured on semi-cylinders on which a circular water jet impinged in crossflow. The ratio of the semi-cylinder's diameter and the nozzle outlet diameter were varied parametrically, as were the Reynolds number and the supplementary water heights. The measurements showed that the circumferential distribution of the heat transfer coefficient peaked at the stagnation point. For a fixed supplementary water height, the peak heat transfer coefficient was not depend on the curvature of test specimen(d/D). Optimum height of supplementary water which brought about the augmentation of heat transfer at the stagnation point was S/D=1. The Nusselt number decreased as the circumferential distance or angle increased. The circumferential distribution of dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) was independent of d/D ($d/D{\geq}8.33$), but for the d/D<8.33, it was depended on d/D. At a fixed angle of specimen, dimensionless heat transfer (Nu/Nus) decreased as the ratio d/D increased. The extent of the decrease between d/D=6.67 and 8.33 was markedly greater than that between d/D=8.33 and 10, or d/D=10 and 11.67.

  • Rhombohedral $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals are fabricated using the cost-effective solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method; their dielectric and piezoelectric properties are also characterized. Measurements show that (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals have an electromechanical coupling factor ($k_{33}$) higher than 0.85, piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$) of about 950 [pC/N], and piezoelectric voltage constant ($g_{33}$) higher than 40 [${\times}10^{-3}Vm/N$]. Especially the $d_{33}$ of (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals was by about six times higher than that of their ceramics. Because their electromechanical coupling factor ($k_{33}$) and piezoelectric voltage constant ($d_{33}$, $g_{33}$) are higher than those of soft PZT ceramics, it is expected that rhombohedral (001) $Ba(Ti_{0.92}Zr_{0.08})O_3$ single crystals can be used as "lead-free" piezoelectric materials in many piezoelectric applications such as actuator, sensor, and transducer.

  • The complexity of macro-fiber composite (MFC) materials increasing the difficulty in simulation and analysis of MFC integrated structures. To give an accurate prediction of MFC bonded smart structures for the simulation of shape and vibration control, the paper develops a linear electro-mechanically coupled static and dynamic finite element (FE) models based on the first-order shear deformation (FOSD) hypothesis. Two different types of MFCs are modeled and analyzed, namely MFC-d31 and MFC-d33, in which the former one is dominated by the $d_{31}$ effect, while the latter one by the $d_{33}$ effect. The present model is first applied to an MFC-d33 bonded composite plate, and then is used to analyze both active shape and vibration control for MFC-d31/-d33 bonded plate with various piezoelectric fiber orientations.

  • In this paper, in order to develop excellent Pb-free composition ceramics for ultrasonic sensor. The $SnO_2$-doped ($Na_{0.525}K_{0.443}Li_{0.037})(Nb_{0.883}Sb_{0.08}Ta_{0.037})O_3$)(abbreviated as NKL-NST) ceramics have been synthesized using the ordinary solid state reaction method. The effect of $SnO_2$-doping on their dielectric and piezoelectric properties was investigated. The ceramics doped with 0 wt% $SnO_2$ have the optimum values of piezoelectric constant($d_{33}$), piezoelectric figure of merit($d_{33}.g_{33}$), planar piezoelectric coupling coefficient($k_p$) and density : $d_{33}=195[pC/N]$, $d_{33}.g_{33}=5.62pm^2/N.kp=0.40$, $density=4.436[g/cm^3]$. suitable for duplex ultrasonic sensor application.

  • In this paper, the 30 W power amplifier for an IMT-2000 repeater was developed a gain flatness and the third IMD (Intermodulation distortion) by microwave absorber. The absorption ability of the absorber is shown up to -10 dB and -4 dB at 3.6 GHz, 2.3 GHz band, respectively. The power amplifier without absorber has the gain over 57 dB, the gain flatness of $\pm$0.33 dB and the third IMD of 27 dBc at 33.3 W output. Otherwise, the power amplifier with absorber has the gain over 58 dB, the gain flatness of less than $\pm$0.9, the third IMD over 29 dBc at the same output power. As a result, the characteristic of the different type shows improvement of 1 dB in gain, 0.3 dB in gain flatness and 1.77 dBc in IMD.
