Titania is widely used as an effective photocatalyst for the photodegradation of environmental pollutants in air. In this study, novel N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were synthesized via sol-gel method and characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometer, transmission electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer. N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts were nano-sized with an average particle size of about 20 nm. The XRD pattern of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts showed both anatase and rutile phases. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of NO under UV and visible light irradiation at various parameters such as amount of photocatalyst, concentration of NO, and intensity of light. The photocatalytic activity of N-doped $ZrO_2/TiO_2$ photocatalysts was effective for the enhancement of the degradation of NO and higher than that of $TiO_2$ photocatlysts under UV and visible light irradiation.

Anodic titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes are very attractive materials for gas sensors due to its large surface to volume ratios. The most widely known method for fabrication of TiO2 nanotubes is anodic oxidation of metallic Ti foil. Since the remaining Ti substrate is a metallic conductor, TiO2 nanotube arrays on Ti are not appropriate for gas sensor applications. Detachment of the TiO2 nanotube arrays from the Ti Substrate or the formation of electrodes onto the TiO2 nanotube arrays have been used to demonstrate gas sensors based on TiO2 nanotubes. But the sensitivity was much lower than those of TiO2 gas sensors based on conventional TiO2 nanoparticle films. In this study, Ti thin films were deposited onto a SiO2/Si substrate by electron beam evaporation. Samples were anodized in ethylene glycol solution and ammonium fluoride (NH4F) with 0.1wt%, 0.2wt%, 0.3wt% and potentials ranging from 30 to 60V respectively. After anodization, the samples were annealed at $600^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hours, leading to porous TiO2 films with TiO2 nanotubes. With changing temperature and CO concentration, gas sensor performance of the TiO2 nanotube gas sensors were measured, demonstrating the potential advantages of the porous TiO2 films for gas sensor applications. The details on the fabrication and gas sensing performance of TiO2 nanotube sensors will be presented.
Au/TiO$_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles were synthesised by sol-gel process, and the morphology and crystallinity of TiO$_2$ shell were investigated by TEM and UV-Vis. absorption spectrometer. Au/TiO$_2$ core-shell structure nanoparticles could be prepared by the hydrolysis of TOAA (Titanium Oxide Acethylacetonate) in Au colloid ethanol solution with $H_2O$. The thickness of TiO$_2$ shell on the surface of Au particles was about 1 nm. To investigate the crystallinity of TiO$_2$ shell, UV light with 254 nm and radioactive lay of $^{60}$ CO were irradiated on the TiO$_2$ coated Au colloid ethanol solution. The surface plasmon phenomenon of Au nanoparticles appeared only when the radioactive lay was irradiated on the TiO$_2$ coated Au colloid ethanol solution. From these results, it was found that the TiO$_2$ shell was amorphous and the MUA (Mercaptoundecanoic Acid) layer on the Au particle for its dispersion didn't act as an obstacle to disturb the movement of electron onto the surface of Au particle.
Nano-sized $TiO_2$-60 wt% SrO composite powders were synthesized by a sol-gel method using titanium isopropoxide and $Sr(OH)_2\;{\cdot}\;8H_2O$ as precursors. 3, -5, -7 wt%Ag spot-coated $TiO_2$-60 wt% SrO composite powders were synthesized by a Ag electroless deposition method using $TiO_2$-60 wt% SrO composite powders calcined at $1050^{\circ}C$, which mainly exhibited the $SrTiO_3$phase. However, a small number of rutile $TiO_2$, $Sr_2TiO_4$ and $SrO_2$ phases were also detected. In the Ag spot-coated powders synthesized by electroless deposition, nano-sized particles about 5-25 nm in diameter adhered to the $TiO_2$-60 wt% SrO composite powders. The photocatalytic activity of Ag spot-coated $TiO_2$-SrO and $TiO_2$-SrO composite powders for degradation of phenol showed that all of $TiO_2$-SrO composite powders were highly active under UV light irradiation. 7 wt%Ag spot-coated $TiO_2$-60wt.%SrO composite powders had a relatively higher photocatalytic activity than did $TiO_2$-SrO composite powders under visible light.
$Au@TiO_2$ core-shell decorated rGO nanocomposite (NC) was prepared using a simple solvothermal method followed by heat treatment for gas sensor application. The crystal structure and morphology of the composites were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The $NO_2$ sensing response of the $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC was tested at operating temperatures from $250^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$, and was compared with those of the bare rGO and $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs. The $Au@TiO_2/rGO$ NC-based sensor showed a far higher response than the rGO or $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell based sensors, with the maximum response detected when the operating temperature was $400^{\circ}C$. This improved response was due to the high rGO gas absorption capability for $NO_2$ gas and the catalytic effect of $Au@TiO_2$ core-shell NPs in oxidizing $NO_2$ to $NO_3$.
Nickel nanoparticle-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ composite (Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$) was prepared by in situ polymerization method. The physical and chemical properties of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$ were investigated by XRD, FT-IR, BET, TGA, SEM and TEM techniques. The catalytic performance of this novel heterogeneous catalyst was determined for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and phenylboronic acid in the presence of methanol-water mixture as solvent. The effects of reaction temperature, the amount of catalyst, amount of support, solvent, and amount of metal for the synthesis of Ni-PVP/$TiO_2-ZrO_2$, were investigated as well as recyclability of the heterogeneous composite. The catalyst used for this synthetically useful transformation showed considerable level of reusability besides very good activity.
We introduce a new synthesis method to prepare small TiO2 nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution, which is achieved by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation. The effects of E-beam irradiation on the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles and the electrochemical performance of TiO2 nanoparticles as alternative anode materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated. The TiO2 nanoparticles induced by E-beam irradiation present better cycling performance and rate capability than the TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by normal hydrolysis reaction. The better electrochemical performance is attributed to small particle size and narrow particle size distribution, resulting in the large surface area that provides innumerable reaction sites and short diffusion length for Li+ through TiO2 nanoparticles.
Electrochromic (EC) devices are capable of reversibly changing their optical properties upon charge injection and extraction induced by the external voltage. The characteristics of the EC device, such as low power consumption, high coloration efficiency, and memory effects under open circuit status, make them suitable for use in a variety of applications including smart windows and electronic papers. Coloration due to reduction or oxidation of redox chromophores can be used for EC devices (e-paper), but the switching time is slow (second level). Recently, with increasing demand for the low cost, lightweight flat panel display with paper-like readability (electronic paper), an EC display technology based on dye-modified $TiO_2$ nanoparticle electrode was developed. A well known organic dye molecule, viologen, was adsorbed on the surface of a mesoporous $TiO_2$ nanoparticle film to form the EC electrode. On the other hand, ZnO is a wide bandgap II-VI semiconductor which has been applied in many fields such as UV lasers, field effect transistors and transparent conductors. The bandgap of the bulk ZnO is about 3.37 eV, which is close to that of the $TiO_2$ (3.4 eV). As a traditional transparent conductor, ZnO has excellent electron transport properties, even in ZnO nanoparticle films. In the past few years, one-dimension (1D) nanostructures of ZnO have attracted extensive research interest. In particular, 1D ZnO nanowires renders much better electron transportation capability by providing a direct conduction path for electron transport and greatly reducing the number of grain boundaries. These unique advantages make ZnO nanowires a promising matrix electrode for EC dye molecule loading. ZnO nanowires grow vertically from the substrate and form a dense array (Fig. 1). The ZnO nanowires show regular hexagonal cross section and the average diameter of the ZnO nanowires is about 100 nm. The cross-section image of the ZnO nanowires array (Fig. 1) indicates that the length of the ZnO nanowires is about $6\;{\mu}m$. From one on/off cycle of the ZnO EC cell (Fig. 2). We can see that, the switching time of a ZnO nanowire electrode EC cell with an active area of $1\;{\times}\;1\;cm^2$ is 170 ms and 142 ms for coloration and bleaching, respectively. The coloration and bleaching time is faster compared to the $TiO_2$ mesoporous EC devices with both coloration and bleaching time of about 250 ms for a device with an active area of $2.5\;cm^2$. With further optimization, it is possible that the response time can reach ten(s) of millisecond, i.e. capable of displaying video. Fig. 3 shows a prototype with two different transmittance states. It can be seen that good contrast was obtained. The retention was at least a few hours for these prototypes. Being an oxide, ZnO is oxidation resistant, i.e. it is more durable for field emission cathode. ZnO nanotetropods were also applied to realize the first prototype triode field emission device, making use of scattered surface-conduction electrons for field emission (Fig. 4). The device has a high efficiency (field emitted electron to total electron ratio) of about 60%. With this high efficiency, we were able to fabricate some prototype displays (Fig. 5 showing some alphanumerical symbols). ZnO tetrapods have four legs, which guarantees that there is one leg always pointing upward, even using screen printing method to fabricate the cathode.

This study investigates applying $TiO_2$ (titanium dioxide) nanoparticles to polypropylene nonwoven fabrics via electrospinning for the development of UV-protective materials. To fabricate uniform nanocomposite fibers, three types of $TiO_2$ nanoparticles were applied: powder, colloid, and $TiO_2$ coated polymer pellets. $TiO_2$/polyurethane (PU) and $TiO_2$/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite fibers were electrospun and the morphology was examined using a field-emission scanning electron microscope and a transmission electron microscope. Layered fabric systems with electrospun $TiO_2$ nanocomposite fiber webs were developed at various concentrations of $TiO_2$ in a range of the web area density. The effects of $TiO_2$ concentration and web area density on UV-protective properties were examined. When $TiO_2$ colloid was added into a PVA polymer solution, uniform nanocomposite fiber webs in which $TiO_2$ particles were evenly dispersed were produced. Water-soluble PVA nanofiber webs were given a heat treatment to stabilize the electrospun PVA fibrous structure against dissolution in water. $TiO_2$/PVA nanoeomposite fiber webs with 2wt% $TiO_2$ and 3.0g/$m^2$ web area density exhibited an ultraviolet protection factor of greater than 50, indicating excellent UV protection.

Composite membranes consisting of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) and porous polymers have been widely utilized in photocatalytic water treatment because the composite membranes can allow an easy recovery of NPs after the photocatalytic reaction as well as the reduction of fouling in the membrane. However, the photocatalytic efficiency of the immobilized TiO2 NPs in the composite membranes has been discussed to a limited degree. In this study, we prepared polyethersulfone (PES)/TiO2 composite membranes to study the photocatalytic decomposition of organic dyes under light illumination. The decomposition kinetics of dye molecules by the PES/TiO2 composite membranes and colloidal TiO2 NPs have been compared to discuss the photocatalytic efficiency of NPs before and after their immobilization on the polymer membrane.
