Further Electrochemical Degradation of Real Textile Effluent Using PbO2 Electrode

  • A commercial PbO2 electrode was adopted as the anode for the electrochemical degradation of the real textile effluent with the initial COD of 56.0 mg L-1 and the stainless steel plate as the cathode. The effect of the initial pH, the electrolyte flow rate and the cell voltage on the COD, the current efficiency and the energy consumption were investigated without the addition of NaCl or Na2SO4. The experimental results illustrated that the PbO2 electrode can reduce the COD of the textile effluent from 56.0 mg L-1 to 26.0 mg L-1 with the current efficiency of 86.1% and the energy consumption of 17.5 kWh kg-1 (per kilogram of degraded COD) under the optimal operating conditions. Therefore PbO2 electrode as the anode was promising to further electrochemically degrade the real textile effluent.

  • A commercial PbO2 mesh cylinder electrode was utilized as the anode for the electrochemical degradation of the textile effluent after the biological treatment with the titanium cylinder as the cathode in a self-made tube electrolyzer. The electrochemical performances of the PbO2 electrode in tube electrolyzer under different initial pH, electrolyte flow rates, current densities and times of the electrochemical degradation were investigated. The experimental results illustrated that the PbO2 electrode can reduce the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the textile effluent from 94.0 mg L-1 to 65.0 mg L-1 with the current efficiency of 88.3%, the energy consumption of 27.7 kWh kg-1 (per kilogram of degraded COD) and the carbon emissions of 18.0 kg CO2 kg-1 (per kilogram of degraded COD) under the optimal operating conditions. In addition, the COD of the textile effluent could be reduced from 94.0 mg L-1 to 22.0 mg L-1 after the fifth electrochemical degradation. Therefore, PbO2 mesh cylinder electrode in the tube cylinder was promising for the electrochemical degradation of the textile effluent.

  • The effect of composition size of sintered body and electrode on resonant characteristics of the system $Pb(Mn_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3 PbTiO_3-PbZrO_3$ has been decribed. Composition ranged from X=40 to X=55 diameter of sintered body ranged from D=6.5 to D=12.5(mm) and diameter of electrode ranged from De=5.5 to De=11 (mm) In the composition of morphotropic phase boundary antiresonant frequency (fa) dcreased slowly whereas resonant frequency (fr) decreased rapidly on the ground of this Δf(fa-fr) and electromechanical coupling fractor Kp increased and Qm showed low value. On the contrary in toward the composition of tetragonal and rhombo-hedral fa increased slowly whereas fr increased rapidly on the ground of this Δf and Kp decreased and Qm increased abruptly. Substance of the above statements have no concern with size of sintered body and ele-ctrode. The other side as the size of electrode decreased Qm fr, fa and Δf increased. Cm and Co dominantly affect the resonant frequency and antiresonant frequency.

A Study on the Preparation of Lead Dioxide Electrode with High Oxygen Overvoltage and Durability (높은 산소과전압과 내구성의 이산화납전극 제조에 관한 연구)

  • The characteristic and performance of ${\beta}-PbO_2$ layer electrodeposited on ${\alpha}-PbO_2/IrO_2-TiO_2/Ti$ substrate by adding sodium lauryl sulfate and $TiO_2$ powder in lead nitrate solution were investigated by using XRD, SEM, cyclic voltammograms, and macro-elctrolysis. Results of XRD analysis ascertain that ${\beta}-PbO_2$ layers electrodeposited in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate and $TiO_2$, powder on ${\alpha}-PbO_2/IrO_2-TiO_2/Ti$ substrate have the same tetragonal structure as pure ${\beta}-PbO_2$ layers. The SEM results show that sodium lauryl sulfate tend to diminish crystal size of the deposited layer. The ${\beta}-PbO_2$ electrode electrodeposited in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate and $TiO_2$ powder gives significantly improved oxygen overvoltage and durability for anodic oxidation in KOH and $HClO_4$ supporting electrolyte. Electrode performance and durability for the evolution of ozone in perchloric acid solution have been investigated by using ${\beta}-PbO_2$ electrodes electrodeposited on Titanium $madras^{(R)}$. It was ascertained that the $PbO_2$ electrode electrodeposited on ${\alpha}-PbO_2/IrO_2-TiO_2/Ti$ $madras^{(R)}$ by adding sodium lauryl sulfate and $TiO_2$ powder in $HClO_4$ supporting electrolyte had the highest current efficiency and durability.

  • In this study the system of $Pb(Mn_{1/3} Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3-PbZrO_3$ piexoelectric ceramics was made in the radial mode disk and attenuation characteristic of the desinged ladder type filter was investigated. What is more temperature dependance of resonant frequency and variation of resonant frequency was examined by chan-ging the electrode diameter of piezoelectric resonator. (A Group : De=11mm, B Group : De=7.5mm and C Gro-up : De=5.5mm) Upon investigation it was the following. The center frequency of A, B and c filter showed up in the 200KHz, 270KHz and 380KHz respectively. As the electrode diameter decreased center frequency in creased abruptly. As the Co_2/Co1 increased attenuation characteristics and selectivity was improved. As the x=50. resonant frequ-ency invaried with variation of temperature.

Effect of Electrode Structures on Electron Emission of the $Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ Ferroelectric Cathode ($Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ 강유전체 음극의 전극 모형에 따른 전자 방출 특성)

  • Electric-field-induced electron emission from the three kinds of $Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ ferroelectric cathodes with different electrode structure has been investigated. Regardless of the electrode structures, a threshold field of the each cathode was 2.5-2.6kV/mm, which is 3 times higher than the coercive field of $Pb(Zr_{0.56}Ti_{0.44})O_3$ material. Although the waveform of the electron currents was affected by the structure of the electrode, no significant difference for the emission properties such as the peak current and the pulse width was observed from the three kinds of the cathodes. However, the current density of the cathode was dependent on the electrode structure. From the simulation of electric field distribution, the surface flashover, and the injury region of the cathode surface, it was proved that the prime electrons were initiated at the electrode-ceramic-vacuum triple point by field emission and the emission currents were strongly enhanced by the surface plasma.

A Study on the Effect of Electrolyte Additives on Zn Electrode with Pb3O4 in Zn-AgO Secondary Battery System (Zn-AgO 이차 전지에서 Pb3O4가 첨가된 아연 전극에 미치는 전해질 첨가제의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Zn electrode was widely used as an anode material in alkaline battery systems in highly concentrated KOH electrolyte, however it was well known that its cycle life is significantly shortened by growth of dendrite due to the high dissolution of $Zn(OH)_2$ and rapid electrochemical reaction. In this study when by the additives such as $Ca(OH)_2$, Citrate, tartrate and Gluconate were added to $40\%$ KOH electrolyte at solution temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and the amount of $5wt\%\;Pb_3O_4$ was mixed to Zn electrode and then the effect of $Pb_3O_4$ and additives on the electrochemical behavior of Zn electrode was investigated by Potentiodynamic Polarization Curves, Cyclic Voltammetry, Accelerated Life Cycle lest, and SEM image analyses. The addition of $Pb_3O_4$ reduced the corrosion rate of Zn electrode. The corrosion potential of Zn electrode with $Pb_3O_4$ was higher or lower than that of pure Zn electrode however was not influenced practically to the open circuit voltage. And the addition of 4 type additives had an important role in improving both cycle life in accelerated cycle life test and corrosion resistance. Furthermore the additive of Tartrate indicated comparatively a good effect to corrosion resistance as well as charging-discharging property Improvement among those four type additives.

  • $PbO-B_2O_3-SiO_2-Al_2O_3$, system was investigated for optical, thermal and electrical properties of transparent dielectric. We also studied the reaction between transparent dielectric and transparent electrode(Indium Tin Oxide, ITO) during firing. For the evaluation of properties, dielectrics were prepared under the conditions fired at 520~58$0^{\circ}C$ with 12$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness. In the reaction between dielectrics and electrode(ITO), In ions diffused into dielectric layer, while Sn ion diffusion was not observed. The coefficient of thermal expansion, the dielectric constant, the glass transition temperature and the transmittance of the dielectric were greatly dependent on PbO content. The increase of the coefficient of thermal expansion and the dielectric constant were monitored by increasing PbO, while the glass transition temperature and the transmittance were decreased. With the increased $Al_2O_3/B_2O_3$ ratio, the coefficient of thermal expansion and the transmittance were decreased, while the dielectric constant was increased. The glass transition temperature did not change significantly.

A Strip Sensor Based on PbO2/Carbon Paste Electrode to Determine Sweetener Contents in Fruits (이산화납/탄소 반죽 전극을 이용한 과당 농도 측정 스트립센서)

  • A strip sensor based on $PbO_2$/carbon paste electrode was prepared by a screen-printing method, and employed to electrochemically determine the concentration of fruit sweeteners(i.e. glucose, sucrose, and fructose). The $PbO_2$/carbon paste electrode could monitor electrocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds such as carbohydrates, and measure the levels of natural sweeteners without enzyme. Severe interference from ascorbic acid was effectively reduced by modifying the electrode surface with a Nafion membrane. The response level of the Nafion/$PbO_2$/carbon paste electrode increased in the order of fructose, sucrose, and glucose, which corresponds to the order of sweetness perceived by humans.

  • Zn electrode is being widely used as an anode material in alkaline battery systems. However the corrosion resistance of Zn electrode in KOH electrolyte is very low. So, to improve the corrosion resistance of Zn electrode $Pb_3O_4$ was mixed to Zn material. And 5 wt.% Pb3O4 addition was most appropriate quantity.
