Our research objectives are to determine under what conditions microalgal-based $CO_2$capture from flue gases is economically attractive. Specifically, our objective here was to select microalgae that are temperature, pH and flue gas tolerant. Microalgae were grown under five different temperatures, three different pH and five different flue gas mixtures besides 100% $CO_2$(gas concentrations that the cells were exposed to ranged 5.7-100% $CO_2$, 0-3504ppm SO$_2$, 0-328ppm NO, and 0-126ppm NO$_2$). Our results indicate that the microalgal strains tested exhibit a substantial ability to withstand a wide range of temperature (54 strains tested), pH (20 strains tested) and flue gas composition (24 strains tested) likely to be encountered in cultures used for carbon sequestration from smoke stack gases. Our results indicate that microalgal photosynthesis is a limited but viable strategy for $CO_2$capture from flue gases produced by stationary combustion sources.
Workers who work at indoor and outdoor environment near busy road are suspected to be exposed to high-elevated air pollutant levels during working hours. This study evaluated the working-time nitrogen dioxide ($NO_2$) exposure for workers (repairmen and polishers) of shoe-stalls. Since shoe-stalls have particularly been located near busy road in Korea, workers might be high exposure to $NO_2$ from traffic exhaust as well as indoor sources of shoe-stall such as portable gas range (butane gas) during working hours. In this study, we measured the indoor and outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of shoe-stalls. Simultaneously, outdoor $NO_2$ concentrations of building through sidewalk from shoe-stall were measured. High $NO_2$ exposure for workers of shoe-stalls was considered to be inflow of outdoor source of exhausted emission from vehicles and indoor source from usage of gas range to polish the shoe. Indoor/outdoor $NO_2$ concentration ratio ($0.94{\pm}0.22$) in Seoul was higher than that ($1.06{\pm}0.34$) in Asan, because ambient $NO_2$ level was high in Seoul and usage of gas range was prevalent in Asan. According to $NO_2$ concentrations by distance from roadside to building through sidewalk, $NO_2$ concentrations showed the decreased trend with distance. The results of this study can be utilized by municipal authorities in urban planning for evaluating effects of future traffic planning and land use.
This study investigates the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing characteristics of an Si MOSFET gas sensor with a tungsten trioxide (WO3) sensing layer deposited using the sputtering method. The Si MOSFET gas sensor consists of a horizontal floating gate (FG) interdigitated with a control gate (CG). The WO3 sensing layer is deposited on the interdigitated CG-FG of a field effect transistor(FET)-type gas sensor platform. The sensing layer is deposited with different thicknesses of the film ranging from 100 nm to 1 ㎛ by changing the deposition times during the sputtering process. The sensing characteristics of the fabricated gas sensor are measured at different NO2 concentrations and operating temperatures. The response of the gas sensor increases as the NO2 concentration and operating temperature increase. However, the gas sensor has an optimal performance at 180℃ considering both response and recovery speed. The response of the gas sensor increases significantly from 24% to 138% as the thickness of the sensing layer increases from 100 nm to 1 ㎛. The sputtered WO3 film consists of a dense part and a porous part. As reported in previous work, the area of the porous part of the film increases as the thickness of the film increases. This increased porous part promotes the reaction of the sensing layer with the NO2 gas. Consequently, the response of the gas sensor increases as the thickness of the sputtered WO3 film increases.
$NO_2/H_2$ 가스와 상대 습도 센서들은 각각 $SnO_2$와 $BaTiO_3$ 나노 입자들을 PCB 기판에서의 IDT(interdigital Transducer)에 프린팅 함으로써 제작되었다.
Recently, one-dimensional semiconducting nanomaterials have attracted considerable interest for their potential as building blocks for fabricating various nanodevices. Among these semiconducting nanomaterials,, $SnO_2$ nanostructures including nanowires, nanorods, nanobelts, and nanotubes were successfully synthesized and their electrochemical properties were evaluated. Although $SnO_2$ nanowires and nanobelts exhibit fascinating gas sensing characteristics, there are still significant difficulties in using them for device applications. The crucial problem is the alignment of the nanowires. Each nanowire should be attached on each die using arduous e-beam or photolithography, which is quite an undesirable process in terms of mass production in the current semiconductor industry. In this study, a simple process for making sensitive $SnO_2$ nanowire-based gas sensors by using a standard semiconducting fabrication process was studied. The nanowires were aligned in-situ during nanowire synthesis by thermal CVD process and a nanowire network structure between the electrodes was obtained. The $SnO_2$ nanowire network was floated upon the Si substrate by separating an Au catalyst between the electrodes. As the electric current is transported along the networks of the nanowires, not along the surface layer on the substrate, the gas sensitivities could be maximized in this networked and floated structure. By varying the nanowire density and the distance between the electrodes, several types of nanowire network were fabricated. The $NO_2$ gas sensitivity was 30~200 when the $NO_2$ concentration was 5~20ppm. The response time was ca. 30~110 sec.
Brush-like ZnO hierarchical nanostructures decorated with MgxZn1-xO (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5) were fabricated and examined for application to a gas sensor. They were synthesized using vapor phase growth (VPG) on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates. To generate electronic accumulation at ZnO surface, MgZnO nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel method, and the ratio of Mg and Zn was adjusted to optimize the device for NO2 gas detection. As the electrons in the accumulation layer generated by the heterojunction reacted faster and more frequently with the gas, the sensitivity and speed improved. When tested as sensing materials for gas sensors at 100 ppm NO2 at 300℃, these MgZnO decorated ZnO nanostructures exhibited an improvement from 165 to 514 times compared to pristine ZnO. The response and recovery time of the MgZnO decorated ZnO samples were shorter than those of the pristine ZnO. Various analyzing techniques, including field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) were employed to confirm the growth morphology, atomic composition, and crystalline information of the samples, respectively.
The NO$_2$ gas-deteotion characteristics were investigated using the functional organic Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) files of Dilithium phthalocyanines(Li$_2$Pc). The optimum conditions for a film deposition were obtained through a study of $\pi$-A isotherms, and the deposited film status was confirmed by the ellipsometry measurements. A propel number of layers for the gas-detection was proved to be 9 layers from a measurement of a measurement of change in the electrical conductivities when the films were exposed to the 200 ppm of the NO$_2$ gases. A response time, recovery time, and reproducibility were also studied. A proper temperature which was able to activate gas interaction between NO$_2$ gases and Li$_2$Pc LB films was around 150$^{\circ}C$ judging from the electrical conductivities in a temperature range of 20 to 200$^{\circ}C$. It was found that at 150\ulcorner there are increments of electrical conductivities by 65 tines, 30 seconds of response time and 60 seconds of recovery tine when the filmswere exposed to the gasses.
Catalytic reduction and oxidation of NO over polyacrylonitrile based activated carbon fibers (PAN-ACF) under various conditions were carried out to develop removal process of NO from the flue gas. The effect of temperature, oxygen concentration and the moisture content for the reduction of NO with ammonia as a reducing agent was investigated. The reduction of NO increased with the oxygen concentration, but decreased with the increased temperature. The moisture content in the flue gas affects the reduction of NO as the inhibition of the adsorption of the other components and the reaction on the surface of ACE For the oxidation of NO to $NO_2$ over PAN-ACF without using a reducing gas, it showed the temperature and the oxygen concentration of the flue gas are the important factors for the NO conversion in which the conversion increased with oxygen concentration and decreased with the temperature increase and might be the alternative option for the selective catalytic reduction process.
ZnO nanofibers were electro-spun from a solution containing poly 4-vinyl phenol and Zn acetate dihydrate. The calcination process of the ZnO/PVP composite nanofibers brought forth a random network of polycrystalline wurtzite ZnO nanofibers of 30 nm to 70 nm in diameter. The electrical properties of the ZnO nanofibers were governed by the grain boundaries. To investigate possible applications of the ZnO nanofibers, their CO and $NO_2$ gas sensing responses are demonstrated. In particular, the $SnO_2$-deposited ZnO nanofibers exhibit a remarkable gas sensing response to $NO_2$ gas as low as 400 ppb. Oxide nanofibers emerge as a new proposition for oxide-based gas sensors.
