  • The complex [Ni(L)](ClO4)2 (1) (L=2,13-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-3,14-dimethyl-2,6,13,17-tetraazatricyclo[14,4,01.1807.12]docosane) has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. (1) crystallizes in the triclinic, space group P, with a=10.948(2), b=10.948(2), c=14.911(4) , α=93.73(2), β=93.77(2), γ=99.29(2)o, V=1754.8(7) 3, Z=2, R1(wR2) for 5217 observed reflections of [I>2σ(I)] was 0.048(0.099). The coordination environment around nickel(II) ion shows a distorted octahedron with four secondary and tertially amines of the macrocycle and two nitrogen atoms of pyridylmethyl groups.

A Minimally Invasive Rabbit Model of Progressive and Reproducible Disc Degeneration Confirmed by Radiology, Gene Expression, and Histology

  • Objective : To develop a simple, reproducible model of disc degeneration in rabbits through percutaneous annular puncture and to confirm the degree of degeneration over time. Methods : Fifteen New Zealand white rabbits (4 to 5 months old and weighing approximately 3 to 3.5 kg each) underwent annular puncture of the L2-L3, L3-L4, and L4-L5 discs. Rabbits were sacrificed at 4, 8, or 20 weeks after puncture. For a longitudinal study to assess changes in disc height over time, serial X-rays were performed at 0, 2, 4, 8, and 20 weeks for rabbits in the 20-week group. Upon sacrifice, the whole spinal column and discs were extracted and analyzed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), real time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and histological staining. Results : The X-rays showed a slow, progressive decrease in disc height over time. Significant disc space narrowing compared to preoperative disc height was observed during the time period (p<0.001). The MRI grade, aggrecan, and matrix metalloprotease-13 mRNA expression and hematoxylin and eosin/safranin O/anti-collagen II staining were consistently indicative of degeneration, supporting the results of the X-ray data. Conclusion : Percutaneous annular puncture resulted in slow, reproducible disc degeneration that was confirmed by radiology, biochemistry, and histology. This in vivo model can be used to study and evaluate the safety and efficacy of biologic treatments for degenerative disc disease.

Production of Palatinose by Immobilized Cells of Erwinia rhapontici (Erwinia rhapontici 고정화에 의한 Palatinose의 생산)

  • The characteristics of Erwinia rhapontici cells with $\alpha$-glucosyltransferase activity immobilized in Ca-alginate beads and the performance of two different types of reactor-stirred tank reactor(STR) and packed bed reactor(PBR)-charged with these immobilized cells to produce palatinose from sucrose were investigated. The optimal pH(5.5-6.0) and temperature($30-35^{\circ}C$) showed no appreciable difference between free and immobilized cells. The apparent Km value of the immobilized cells(0.28M) was approximately two times higher than that of free cells(0.13M) at $30^{\circ}C$. The half life of the immobilized cells was found to be 380 h with STR while much greater operational stability was achieved with PBR. Continuous operation of PBR at a space velocity of $0.2h^{-1}$ for 30 days showed only 5% loss of initial activity.

  • Static characteristics of SiC (silicon carbide) lateral p-i-n diodes implemented on semi-insulating substrate without an epitaxial layer are inVestigated. On-axis SiC HPSI (high purity semi-insulating) and VDSI (Vanadium doped semi-insulating) substrates are used to fabricate the lateral p-i-n diode. The space between anode and cathode ($L_{AC}$) is Varied from 5 to $20{\mu}m$ to inVestigate the effect of intrinsic-region length on static characteristics. Maximum breakdown Voltages of HPSI and VDSI are 1117 and 841 V at $L_{AC}=20{\mu}m$, respectiVely. Due to the doped Vanadium ions in VDSI substrate, diffusion length of carriers in the VDSI substrate is less than that of the HPSI substrate. A forward Voltage drop of the diode implemented on VDSI substrate is 12 V at the forward current of $1{\mu}A$, which is higher than 2.5 V of the diode implemented on HPSI substrate.

Algal Growth Potential Test (AGPT) in the Stream- Reservoir System of the Pyeongtaek Reservoir Watershed, Korea (평택호와 유역 하천에서 조류생장잠재력측정)

  • For a biological assessment of Pyeongtaek Reservoir and its major influent streams, an algal growth potential test (AGPT) was conducted with the blue-green algae Microcystis aeruginosa in March, June, September and December, 2000. The range and average value of AGPT were from 0 to 463 mg dw/l and 90 mg dw/l, respectively. For the influent streams in particular, the average of AGPT was the in the Hwangguchi Stream (343 mg dw/l). It decreased to 158, 66, 29, 21, and 21 mg dw/l in the Sojong Stream, Songhwan Stream, Osan Stream, Chinwi Stream, and Ansong Stream, respectively. The AGPT values in the reservoir ranged from 0 to 138 mg dw/1(mean 54 mg dw/1) with a tendency to increase in the upstream, which was close to the influent streams. In general, the AGPT values decreased further in the downstream. Immediately after the abrupt increase in influent discharge in summer, the AGPT value in the downstream almost doubled due to the proliferation of blue-green algae. The water quality of Pyeongtaek Reservoir and its influent streams further deteriorated during the drought period. Similarly, the AGPT value was the highest during this period. The AGPT values showed the closest correlation with the content of P (r = 0.999, p<0,001). Thus, it could be concluded that the content of P is highly effective in the growth of algae. In the Pyeongtaek Reservoir Watershed, the AGPT values varied in space and time. It was also closely related to the nutrient content of influent streams. The AGPT values revealed that the water quality state was hypertrophic (> 20 mg dw/1). Thus, control of the aquatic environment is essential. AGPT is very useful in evaluating the fertility and pollution state of the water as well as determining the nutrients that limit the growth of algae.

  • The endoglucanase gene, egl6, of Trichoderma sp. was connected with the yeast ADH1 promoter, and the resultant plasmid, pVT-C4, was introduced into three S. cerevisiae host strains (YNN27, 2805, and SEY2102). Among each 80 transformants, the cell growth and expression level of endoglucanase were compared in test-tube cultivation, and three respective transformants for each host cells showing the highest expression level and cell growth were selected. When three recombinant yeast cells were batchwise cultivated for 48 hr in flask, the total activities of endoglucanase expressed were about 1140 unit/l with 2805/pVT-C4, 1020 unit/l with SEY2102/pVT-C4, and 590 unit/l with YNN27/pVT-C4. Irrespective of host strain, about 80% of the expressed endoglucanase was detected in the extracellular medium. In addition, it was also found that the recombinant enzyme was secreted into the culture medium as two major forms of lightly and heavily glycosylated proteins.

OGLE-2019-BLG-0362Lb: A SUPER-JOVIAN-MASS PLANET AROUND A LOW-MASS STAR

  • We present the analysis of a planetary microlensing event OGLE-2019-BLG-0362 with a shortduration anomaly (~0.4 days) near the peak of the light curve, which is caused by the resonant caustic. The event has a severe degeneracy with ∆𝜒2 = 0.9 between the close and the wide binary lens models both with planet-host mass ratio q ≃ 0.007. We measure the angular Einstein radius but not the microlens parallax, and thus we perform a Bayesian analysis to estimate the physical parameters of the lens. We find that the OGLE-2019-BLG-0362L system is a super-Jovian-mass planet $M_p=3.26^{+0.83}_{-0.58}M_J $ orbiting an M dwarf $M_h=0.42^{+0.34}_{-0.23}M_{\odot}$ at a distance $D_L=5.83^{+1.04}_{-1.55}kpc$. The projected star-planet separation is ${\alpha}_{\bot}= 2.18^{+0.58}_{-0.72}AU$, which indicates that the planet lies beyond the snow line of the host star.

  • We study the neural network approximation to a function in $C^1$[0, 1] and its derivative. In [3], we used even trigonometric polynomials in order to get an approximation order to a function in $L_p$ space. In this paper, we show the simultaneous approximation order to a function in $C^1$[0, 1] using a Bernstein polynomial and a feedforward neural network. Our proofs are constructive.

  • Let $Lu=u_{tt}+u_{xxxx}$ and E be the complete normed space spanned by the eigenfunctions of L. We reveal the existence of six nontrivial solutions of a nonlinear suspension bridge equation $Lu+bu^+=1+{\epsilon}h(x,t)$ in E when the nonlinearity crosses three eigenvalues. It is shown by the critical point theory induced from the limit relative category of the torus with three holes and finite dimensional reduction method.

  • The purpose of this study is to show that the accuracy of the interpolation method can be at least doubled when additional smoothness requirements and boundary conditions are met. In particular, as a basis function, we are interested in using a conditionally positive definite function $\Phi$ whose generalized Fourier transform is of the form $\Phi(\theta)\;=\;F(\theta)$\mid$\theta$\mid$^{-2m}$ with a bounded function F > 0.
