  • There are several sensors in the liquid cargo ship. In the liquid cargo ship, we can get values from various sensors that are level sensor, temperature sensor, pressure sensor, oxygen sensor, VOCs sensor, high overfill sensor, etc. It is important to guarantee the reliability of sensors. In order to guarantee the reliability of sensors, we have to study the diagnosis of sensor fault. The technology of smart sensor is widely used. In this paper, the technology of smart sensor is applied to diagnosis of level sensor fault for liquid cargo ship. In order to diagnose sensor fault and find the sensor position, in this paper, we proposed algorithms of diagnosis of sensor fault using independent sensor diagnosis unit and self fault diagnosis using sensor modeling. Proposed methods are demonstrated by experiment and simulation. The results show that the proposed approach is useful. Proposed methods are useful to develop smart level sensor.

  • With the increasing need for intelligent environment monitoring applications and the decreasing cost of manufacturing sensor devices, it is likely that a wide variety of sensor networks will be deployed in the near future. In this environment, the way to access heterogeneous sensor networks and the way to integrate various sensor data are very important. This paper proposes the common system for middleware of sensor networks (COSMOS), which provides integrated data processing over multiple heterogeneous sensor networks based on sensor network abstraction called the sensor network common interface. Specifically, this paper introduces the sensor network common interface which defines a standardized communication protocol and message formats used between the COSMOS and sensor networks.

  • Sensor applications of thin-film transistors (TFTs), such as photosensor, magnetic sensor, temperature sensor and chemical sensor, are introduced. Active-matrix circuits and amplifying circuits using poly-Si TFTs are integrated with these sensors to improve sensor performances and generate additional functions. These sensors may be promising applications after flat-panel displays (FPDs) in giant-micro electronics.

  • We had presented an inductive type intraocular pressure sensor (L-sensor) in previous work. The distance between a micro coil and a ferrite on the membrane was modulated by pressure, and as a result the inductance and resonant frequency were changed. However, L-sensor has some problems to implant in eyes. First problem is low sensitivity. When L-sensor was implanted in rabbit's eyes, resonant frequency of L-sensor was very hard to detect. Second problem is biocompatibility. Size of L-sensor is $6{\times}7{\times}1.2mm$. When L-sensor was implanted in the eyes, it caused the inflammation. Therefore, this study suggests an inductive and capacitive type IOP sensor (LCsensor). The sensitivity of the LC-sensor 27.3 kHz/mmHg under 60mmHg. It is much larger than 14 kHz/mmHg of the L-sensor. And the size of LC-sensor is 47% smaller than L-sensor. After 2 weeks from the implantation of LC-sensor into rabbit eyes, we measured the changes of resonant frequency of LC-sensor according to increased IOP by Balanced Salt Solution (BSS) injection. As a result, the sensitivity of LC-sensor in in vivo test is 25 kHz/mmHg. That is similar to the sensitivity of in vitro test.

  • Sensor networks are used in various fields such as marine, defense, and smart home etc. Among the components of the sensor network, the sensor node collects sensor data, as one of the representative sensor network roles, and the sensor node makes a greate influence on the overall performance of the sensor network. Therefore, how to design the sensor node is an important issue in the sensor network field. However, the research on the sensor network architecture suitable for the sensor network installation environment has been made more important than the research on how to configure the sensor node. In this paper, we propose to identify elements to be considered for designing a sensor node that makes a large influence on the performance of the sensor network, and to easily implement the sensor node through the state transition model based on these elements.

  • The integrated sensor module of vehicle combines the functions of rain sensor, auto defog sensor, and sun angle sensor into a single module. These functions originally were applied to work separatively. This integrated sensor module should meet the each performance which appears from the individual modules up to the same level or higher. Therefore, it is important to verify the stability and the accuracy considering the characteristics of the integrated sensor module according to various situations. For the verification, we need to use the actual data of integrated sensor module measured but, a lot of time and money is needed to collect data measured under various circumstances when operating. Thus, through the development of this simulator for the control of the integrated sensor module, we can use it effectively for the initial verification of integrated sensor module by implementing the various situations. In this paper, the simulator for controlling the integrated sensor module which combines vision-based rain sensor, auto defog sensor, auto light sensor, and sun angle sensor has been developed.

  • This paper presents a flexible low-profile antenna sensor for fatigue crack detection and monitoring. The sensor was inspired by the sense of pain in bio-systems as a protection mechanism. Because the antenna sensor does not need wiring for power supply or data transmission, it is an ideal candidate as sensing elements for the implementation of engineering sensor skins with a dense sensor distribution. Based on the principle of microstrip patch antenna, the antenna sensor is essentially an electromagnetic cavity that radiates at certain resonant frequencies. By implementing a metallic structure as the ground plane of the antenna sensor, crack development in the metallic structure due to fatigue loading can be detected from the resonant frequency shift of the antenna sensor. A monostatic microwave radar system was developed to interrogate the antenna sensor remotely. Fabrication and characterization of the antenna sensor for crack monitoring as well as the implementation of the remote interrogation system are presented.

  • Tilt sensor is required to control the attitude of the biped robot when it walks on an uneven terrain. Vision sensor, which is used for recognizing human or detecting obstacles, can be used as a tilt angle sensor by comparing current image and reference image. However, vision sensor alone has a lot of technological limitations to control biped robot such as low sampling frequency and estimation time delay. In order to verify limitations of vision sensor, experimental setup of an inverted pendulum, which represents pitch motion of the walking or running robot, is used and it is proved that only vision sensor cannot control an inverted pendulum mainly because of the time delay. In this paper, to overcome limitations of vision sensor, Kalman filter for the multi-rate sensor fusion algorithm is applied with low-quality gyro sensor. It solves limitations of the vision sensor as well as eliminates drift of gyro sensor. Through the experiment of an inverted pendulum control, it is found that the tilt estimation performance of fusion sensor is greatly improved enough to control the attitude of an inverted pendulum.

  • We report a way to improve the ability of graphene to operate as a gas sensor by applying single stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The sensitivity and recovery of the DNA-graphene sensor depending on the different DNA sequences are analyzed. The different sensor responses to reactive chemical vapors are demonstrated in the time domain. Because of the chemical gating effect of the deposited DNA, the resulting devices show complete and rapid recovery to baseline unlike the bare graphene at room temperature. The application of the pattern recognition technique can increase the potential of DNA-graphene sensors as a chemical vapor classifier.

  • In this study, we develop a methane sensor module that can detect low concentrations below 5,000 ppm and measure up to the detection limit of 50 ppm with the NDIR method, with a long lifetime and high accuracy. Methane ($CH_4$) is one of a representative greenhouse gas, which is very explosive. Thus, it is important to quickly and accurately measure methane concentration in the air. To adjust the methane sensor for industrial field applications, a NDIR-based small sensor was implemented and characterized, where its volume was $4cm{\times}4cm{\times}2cm$ and its response time ($T_{90}$) was less than 30 sec. These results demonstrate that the proposed sensor is commercially available for low-concentration measurement, low volume, and fast response application, such as IoT sensor nodes and portable devices.
