  • Cross linked chitosan beads showed high selective adsorption abilities in order of $Au^{3+}$ > $Hg^{2+}$ > $Cu^{2+}$ > $Cd^{2+}$ > $Pt^{4+}$ > ${UO_2}^{2+}$ ions in mixed solution of various metal ions at pH 4.5. N-methyltyiobenzylated chitosan beads(MTB-chitosan beads) were prepared treating with p-(methylthio) benzaldehyde after cross linking of chitosan beads to give them a high selectivity in adsorption of metal ions. The MTB-chitosan beads demonstrated their selectivity on precious metals among various metal ions distinctively. Particularly, the MTB-chitosan had a peculiar selective adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$, $Au^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions whilst the cross linked chitosan beads showed its high adsorption on $Pd^{2+}$ at pH 1.1. On the other hand, the cross linked chitosan beads showed its superiority in selective adsorption on $Au^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, and $Hg^{2+}$ions to the MTB-chitosan at pH 4.5 of the test solution. Thus metal selectivities were given to chitosan beads through chemical modifications.

  • Pd-Cu alloy membrane for hydrogen separation was fabricated by sputtering and Cu reflow process. At first, the Pd and Cu was continuously deposited by sputtering method on oxidized Si support, the Cu reflow process was followed. Microstructure of the surface and permeability of the membrane was investigated depending on various reflow temperature, time, Pd/cu composition and supports. With respect to our result, Pd-Cu thin film (90 wt.% Pd/10 wt.% Cu) deposited by sputtering process with thickness of $2{\mu}m$ was heat-treated for Cu reflow The voids of the membrane surface were completely filled and the dense crystal surface was formed by Cu reflow behavior at $700^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. Cu reflow process, which is adopted for our work, could be applied to fabrication of dense Pd-alloy membrane for hydrogen separation regardless of supports. Ceramic or metal support could be easily used for the membrane fabricated by reflow process. The Cu reflow process must result in void-free surface and dense crystalline of Pd-alloy membrane, which is responsible for improved selectivity oi the membrane.

  • The reaction of methanol-water mixture to $CO_2$ and $H_2$ on alkaline earth metal-copper-zinc oxide has been studied in the temperature range of 150 ${\sim}\;300^{\circ}C$. Generally the addition of the alkaline earth metal to Cu/ZnO resulted in an enhancement of selectivity for $CO_2$ formation and a reduction of catalytic activity. Measurable activities were found from 150$^{\circ}C$, 200$^{\circ}C$, and 250$^{\circ}C$ on Mg/Cu/ZnO, Ca/Cu/ZnO, and Ba/Cu/ZnO respectively. However, the highest selectivity for $CO_2$ formation was observed in Ba/Cu/ZnO catalyst at 250$^{\circ}C$. The effect of alkaline earth metal or ZnO on the reactivity was investigated using temperature programmed desorption of $CO_2$ or temperature programmed reduction with $H_2$ over catalysts respectively. It was found that $CO_2$ interacts more strongly in the sequence of MgO < CaO < BaO and ZnO decereases the reduction temperature of CuO. From the results, it was suggested that ZnO activates $H_2$ in the redox process of Cu component and alkaline earth metals adsorbs $CO_2$ in the catalytic process.

  • Decomposition reaction of methanol was conducted on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$catalysts with several variables. Variables used in this study are S.V(Space Velocity), partial pressure of methanol, reaction temperature, and composition rate of Ni-Cu. The range of S.V is 10,000-30,000h$\^$-1/, the temperature range is 150-400$^{\circ}C$ and values of Cu/(Ni+Cu) are 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1. Over Ni/SiO$_2$, and Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, the conversion rate of decomposition reaction of methanol arrived at 100% with increasing of temperature. At this time the selectivity of CO on Ni/SiO$_2$, was suddenly decreased, but on Ni-Cu/SiO$_2$, it was still sustained highly. The main products of reaction were CO and H$_2$, and by-products were CO$_2$ and CH$_4$mainly.

  • In this work, a green and simple one-pot route was developed for the synthesis of highly fluorescent aminofunctionalized graphene quantum dots (a-GQDs) via hydrothermal process without any further modification or surface passivation. We synthesized the a-GQDs using glucose as the carbon source and ammonium as a functionalizing agent without the use of a strong acid, oxidant, or other toxic chemical reagent. The as-obtained aGQDs have a uniform size of 3-4 nm, high contents of amino groups, and show a bright green emission with high quantum yield of 32.8%. Furthermore, the a-GQDs show effective fluorescence quenching for $Cu^{2+}$ ions which can serve as effective fluorescent probe for the detection of $Cu^{2+}$. The fluorescent probe using the obtained aGQDs exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward $Cu^{2+}$ with the limit of detection as low as 5.6 nM. The mechanism of the $Cu^{2+}$ induced fluorescence quenching of a-GQDs can be attributed to the electron transfer by the formation of metal complex between $Cu^{2+}$ and the amino groups on the surface of a-GQDs. These results suggest great potential for the simple and green synthesis of functionalized GQDs and a practical sensing platform for $Cu^{2+}$ detection in environmental and biological applications.

  • Single stage water-gas shift reaction has been carried out at a gas hourly space velocity of $150,494h^{-1}$ over $Cu-Ce_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}O_2$ catalysts prepared by a co-precipitation method. Cu loading was optimized to obtain highly active co-precipitated $Cu-Ce_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}O_2$ catalysts for single stage water-gas shift reaction. 80 wt.% $Cu-Ce_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}O_2$ exhibited the excellent catalytic performance as well as 100% $CO_2$ selectivity (CO conversion = 27% at $240^{\circ}C$ for 50 h). The high activity and stability of 80 wt.% $Cu-Ce_{0.8}Zr_{0.2}O_2$ are correlated to low activation energy and large amount of surface Cu atoms.

  • It is generally recognized that thin Pd-Cu alloy films fabricated by sputtering show a wide range of microstructures and properties, both of which are highly dependent on the sputtering conditions. In view of this, the present study aims to investigate the relationship between the performance of hydrogen separation membranes and the microstructure of Pd alloy films depending on sputtering deposition conditions such as substrate temperature, working pressure, and DC power. We fabricated thin and dense Pd-Cu alloy membranes by the micro-polishing of porous Ni support, an advanced Pd-Cu sputtered multi-deposition under the conditions of high substrate temperature / low working pressure / high DC power, and a followed by Cu-reflow heat-treatment. The result of a hydrogen permeation test indicated that the selectivity for $H_2/N_2$ was infinite because of the void-free and dense surface of the Pd alloy membranes, and the hydrogen permeability was 10.5 $ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}atm^{-1}$ for a 6 ${\mu}m$ membrane thickness.

  • In this study, we give insight into questionable results that can be encountered in the conventional sequential extraction of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, and Zn) from soils. Objectives of this study were to determine the extraction variability of exchangeable (EXC)-metals as using six different EXC-extractants commonly accepted, and to investigate selectivity problems with carbonates bound (CAB)-metal fraction, a buffered acetate (1.0 M NaOAc; pH 5.0) extractable-metal fraction, leading to erratic results in especially non-calcareous soils. The contents of EXC-metals were markedly varied with the different extractability of various EXC-metal extractants used. The contents of EXC-Cd fraction were ranged from 2.0 to 74.3% of total Cd content in all of the metal spiked soils studied. The contents of EXC-Zn fraction extracted with the different EXC-extractants were varied with soil types, which were from 0.4 to 3.9% of total Zn in the calcareous soils, from 7.6 to 17.9% in the acidic soil, and from 13.6 to 56.8% in the peat soil. However, the contents of EXC-Cu fraction were relatively similar among the applications of different EXC-meal extractants, 0.2 to 2.1 % of total Cu, in all soils tested. Also, these varied amounts of EXC-metal fractions, especially Cd and Zn, seriously impacted the contents of subsequent metal fractions in the procedure. Furthermore, the CAB-Cd, -Cu, and -Zn fractions extracted by the buffered acetate solution were in critical problem. That is, the buffered acetate solution dissolved not only CAB-metals but also metals that bound or occupied to subsequent fractions, especially OXD-metal fraction, in both calcareous and non-calcareous soils. The erratic results of CAB-fraction also seriously impacted the amounts of subsequent metal fractions. Therefore, the conventional sequential extraction should be reconsidered theoretically and experimentally to quantify the target metal fractions or might be progressively discarded.

  • A carbazole-based Schiff base CB2 was synthesized and applied as a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent probe for $Cu^{2+}$ in $H_2O$-DMSO (8/2, v/v, pH = 7.4) solution. CB2 exhibits an excellent selectivity to $Cu^{2+}$ over other examined metal ions with a prominent fluorescence "turn-on" at 475 nm. CB2 and $Cu^{2+}$ forms a 1:2 binding ratio complex with detection limit of $9.5{\mu}M$. In addition, the $Cu^{2+}$ recognition process is hardly interfered by other examined metal ions.

  • N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) and copper chloride ($CuCl_2$) were first utilized for aerobic oxidation of ${\alpha}$-isophorone (${\alpha}$-IP) to ketoisophorone (KIP) and the effects of co-catalysts, temperature, reaction time, solvent, amount of $CuCl_2$ and pressure of oxygen were investigated extensively. NHPI/$CuCl_2$ turned out to be highly efficient to this oxidation with up to 91.3% conversion and 81.0% selectivity under mild conditions. And various hydrocarbons including benzylic compounds, cycloalkene and its derivatives were also oxidized smoothly under optimized conditions. Moreover, the possible reaction mechanism was proposed and verified by FT-IR spectra.
