$LiNi_xCo_yMn_zO_2$ cathode materials have been the focus of much attention because of their high specific capacity. However, because of the poor interfacial stability between cathodes and electrolytes, the cycling performance of these materials fades rapidly, especially at high temperatures. In the present paper, we propose the use of tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphate (TMSPO), which contains phosphate and silyl functional groups, as a functional additive in electrolytes. The addition of TMSPO resulted in the formation of cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) layers on the surfaces of the cathodes and effectively suppressed electrolyte decomposition reactions, even at high temperatures. As a result, cells cycled with TMSPO exhibited remarkable capacity, which remained after 50 cycles (82.0%), compared to cells cycled without TMSPO (64.6%).

Three dimensional (3D) porous structures consisting of Cu@CoO core-shell-type nano-dendrites were synthesized and tested as the anode materials in lithium secondary batteries. For this purpose, first, the 3D porous films comprising Cu@Co core-shell-type nano-dendrites with various thicknesses were fabricated through the electrochemical co-deposition of Cu and Co. Then the Co shells were selectively anodized to form Co hydroxides, which was finally dehydrated to get Cu@CoO nanodendrites. The resulting electrodes exhibited very high reversible specific capacity almost 1.4~2.4 times the theoretical capacity of commercial graphite, and excellent capacity retention (~90%@50th cycle) as compared with those of the existing transition metal oxides. From the analysis of the cumulative irreversible capacity and morphology change during charge/discharge cycling, it proved that the excellent capacity retention was attributed to the unique structural feature of our core-shell structure where only the thin CoO shell participates in the lithium storage. In addition, our electrodes showed a superb rate performance (70.5%@10.8 C-rate), most likely due to the open porous structure of 3D films, large surface area thanks to the dendritic structure, and fast electron transport through Cu core network.
Titanium sheet metal substrates used in thin film batteries were wet etched and their surface area was increased in order to increase the discharge capacity and power density of the batteries. To obtain a homogeneous etching pattern, we used a conventional photolithographic process. Homogeneous hemisphere-shaped wells with a diameter of approximately $40\;{\mu}m$ were formed on the surface of the Ti substrate using a photo-etching process with a $20\;{\mu}m{\times}20\;{\mu}m$ square patterned photo mask. All-solid-state thin film cells composed of a Li/Lithium phosphorous oxynitride (Lipon)/$LiCoO_2$ system were fabricated onto the wet etched substrate using a physical vapor deposition method and their performances were compared with those of the cells on a bare substrate. It was found that the discharge capacity of the cells fabricated on wet etched Ti substrate increased by ca. 25% compared to that of the cell fabricated on bare one. High discharge rate was also able to be obtained through the reduction in the internal resistance. However, the cells fabricated on the wet etched substrate exhibited a higher degradation rate with charge-discharge cycling due to the nonuniform step coverage of the thin films, while the cells on the bare substrate demonstrated a good cycling performance.
Performance of single cell at solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system is largely affected by electrocatalytic and thermal properties of cathode. Samarium-based perovskite oxide material is recently recognized as promising cathode material for intermediate temperature-operating SOFC due to its high electrocatalytic property. Perovskite structured $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$ and its composite material, $Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}/Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ were investigated in terms of area specific resistance (ASR), thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), thermal cycling and long term performance. $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ was used as electrolyte material. Electrochemical ac impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dilatometer were used to measure the cathodic properties. Composite cathode ($Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_{3-\delta}$: $Sm_{0.2}Ce_{0.8}O_{1.9}$ = 6:4) showed a good ASR of 0.13${\Omega}$$cm^2$ at 650$^{\circ}C$ and its TEC value was 12.3${\times}$10-6/K at 600$^{\circ}C$ which is similar to the value of ceria-based electrolyte of 11.9${\times}$10-6/K. Performance of composite cathode was maintained with no degradation even after 13 times thermal cycle test.
Recently, due to high theoretical capacitance and excellent ion diffusion rate caused by the 2D layered crystal structure, transition metal hydroxides (TMHs) have generated considerable attention as active materials in supercapacitors (or electrochemical capacitors). However, TMHs should be designed using morphological or structural modification if they are to be used as active materials in supercapacitors, because they have insulation properties that induce low charge transfer rate. This study aims to modify the morphological structure for high cycling stability and fast charge storage kinetics of TMHs through the use of nickel cobalt hydroxide [NiCo(OH)2] decorated on nickel foam. Among the samples used, needle-like NiCo(OH)2 decorated on nickel foam offers a high specific capacitance (1110.9 F/g at current density of 0.5 A/g) with good rate capability (1110.9 - 746.7 F/g at current densities of 0.5 - 10.0 A/g). Moreover, at a high current density (10.0 A/g), a remarkable capacitance (713.8 F/g) and capacitance retention of 95.6% after 5000 cycles are noted. These results are attributed to high charge storage sites of needle-like NiCo(OH)2 and uniformly grown NiCo(OH)2 on nickel foam surface.

Cobalt was electrodeposited onto chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene/Si/$SiO_2$ substrates, during different time intervals, using an electrolyte solution containing a low concentration of cobalt sulfate. The intention was to investigate the details of the deposition process (and the dissolution process) and the resulting magnetic properties of the Co deposits on graphene. During and after electrodeposition, in-situ magnetic measurements were performed using an (AGFM). These were followed by ex situ morphological analysis of the samples with ${\Delta}t_{DEP}$ 30 and 100 s by atomic force microscopy in the non-contact mode on pristine CVD graphene/$SiO_2$/Si. We demonstrate that it is possible to electrodeposit Co onto graphene, and that in-situ magnetic measurements can also help in understanding details of the deposition process itself. The results show that the Co deposits are ferromagnetic with decreasing coercivity ($H_C$) and demonstrate increasing magnetization on saturation ($M_{SAT}$) and electric signal proportional to remanence ($M_r$), as a function of the amount of the electrodeposited Co. It was also found that, after the end of the dissolution process, a certain amount of cobalt remains on the graphene in oxide form (this was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), as suggested by the magnetic measurements. This oxide tends to exhibit a limited asymptotic amount when cycling through the deposition/dissolution process for increasing deposition times, possibly indicating that the oxidation process is similar to the graphene surface chemistry.
Emiliania huxleyi is a marine phytoplankton that plays a critical role in global carbon and sulfur cycling. The genome of E. huxleyi has been sequenced, and an in-depth proteomic profile of this organism has been reported. This study analyzed the phosphoproteome of E. huxleyi and identified its changes under calcium-limited conditions. A TiO2 microcolumn was used for phosphopeptide enrichment, followed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis. Overall, we identified 7,010 phosphorylated sites on 3,355 phosphopeptides associated with 2,929 phosphoproteins in E. huxleyi. Quantitative analysis revealed changes in the phosphoproteome in E. huxleyi when ambient conditions changed to calcium-limited conditions, notably the phosphorylation of some transporters was altered. This study provides an overview of protein phosphorylation in E. huxleyi and paves the way for further investigations of its biological functions.
A new cathode material based on Li$Ni_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ (LNCA)/polyaniline (Pani) composite was prepared by in situ self-stabilized dispersion polymerization in the presence of LNCA. The materials were characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Electrochemical properties including galvanostatic charge-discharge ability, cyclic voltammetry (CV), capacity, cycling performance, and AC impedance were measured. The synthesized LNCA/Pani had a similar particle size to LNCA and exhibited good electrochemical properties at a high C rate. Pani (the emeraldine salt form) interacts with metal-oxide particles to generate good connectivity. This material shows good reversibility for Li insertion in discharge cycles when used as the electrode of lithium ion batteries. Therefore, the Pani coating is beneficial for stabilizing the structure and reducing the resistance of the LNCA. In particular, the LNCA/Pani material has advantageous electrochemical properties.

High nickel layered oxide cathodes are gaining increasing attention for lithium-ion batteries due to their higher energy density and lower cost compared to LiCoO2. However, they suffer from the formation of residual lithium on the surface in the form of LiOH and Li2CO3 on exposure to ambient air. The residual lithium causes notorious issues, such as slurry gelation during electrode preparation and gas evolution during cell cycling. In this review, we investigate the residual lithium issues through its impact on cathode slurry instability based on deformed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF) as well as its formation and reduction mechanism in terms of inherently off-stoichiometric synthesis of high nickel cathodes. Additionally, new analysis method with anhydrous methanol was introduced to exclude Li+/H+ exchange effect during sample preparation with distilled water. We hope that this review would contribute to encouraging the academic efforts to consider practical aspects and mitigation in global high-energy-density lithium-ion battery manufacturers.
$M_2GeO_4$ (M = Co, Fe and Ni) was synthesized as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries and its electrochemical characteristics were investigated. The $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode exhibited an initial discharge capacity of $1127.8mAh\;g^{-1}$ and better capacity retention than $Co_2GeO_4$ and $Ni_2GeO_4$. A diffusion coefficient of lithium ion in the $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode was measured to be $12.7{\times}10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$, which was higher than those of the other two electrodes. The electrochemical performance of the $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode was improved by coating carbon onto the surface of $Fe_2GeO_4$ particles. The carbon-coated $Fe_2GeO_4$ electrode delivered a high initial discharge capacity of $1144.9mAh\;g^{-1}$ with good capacity retention. The enhanced cycling performance was mainly attributed to the carbon-coated layer that accommodates the volume change of the active materials and improves the electronic conductivity. Our results demonstrate that the carbon-coated $Fe_2GeO_4$ can be a promising anode material for achieving high energy density lithium-ion batteries.
