Preparation and thermodynamics consideration of MgO-Al spinel by self-propagation high- temperature synthesis (자전고온연소합성법에 의한 MgO-Al 스피넬 제조 및 열역학적 고찰)

  • Self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) technique was used to synthesize the spinel phase of $MgAl_2O_4$ from MgO and Al powder. Thermit reaction products of MgO and Al, The reaction products were heat treated at the temperature $800^{\circ}C$ preheating. Processing factors such as DTA/TG, combustium product and maxium temperature, synthesis of MgO and Al from "$MgO+2Al+3/2O_2$\rightarrow$MgAl_2O_4$". An activation energy (${\Delta}H^{\circ}$)-264.8 kcal/mol and reaction of maxium temperature 5634 K was calculated to form a $MgAl_2O_4$ spinel from unreacted materials. Pellet were increased volume 6% after thermit reaction. reaction.

Preparation of $ZrO_2/Al_2O_3-Mullite$ Composites Using the Silica Sol Infiltration Method (실리카 졸 침투법을 이용한 $ZrO_2/Al_2O_3-Mullite$ 복합체의 제조)

  • ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were prepared by infiltration of the silica sol to the porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies. The porous ZrO2/Al2O3 bodies for infiltration were fabricated using ZrO2 (20wt%)/Al2O3 composite powders synthesized by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method. The preparation of silica sols was conducted by the hydrolysis-peptization of an alcoholic TEOS solution. When ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite and ZrO2/Al2O3 composites were sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs, both of them showed an excellent sinterability. As the amount of mullite added in the composites increased, the ratio of the tetragonal phase of zirconia to the monoclinic phase at the room temperature became higher. It was known that values of the fracture toughness of the ZrO2/Al2O3-Mullite composites were about 5.48 MPa.m1/2 much larger than that of the ZrO2/Al2O3 system.

  • $Al_2O_3$ films with the thickness of 50 nm were fabricated on 4H-SiC by aerosol deposition, and their electrical properties were characterized with different post annealing conditions. As a result, the $Al_2O_3$ film annealed in $N_2$ atmosphere showed decreased fixed charge density at the interface area between the $Al_2O_3$ and SiC, and increased leakage currents due to the generation of oxygen vacancies. From this result, it was confirmed that proper $N_2$ and $O_2$ ratio for the post annealing process is important.

  • The $Al_2$O$_3$specimens were prepared by the conventional mixed oxide method with addition La$_2$O$_3$, Bi$_2$O$_3$. The specimens were sintered at 15$25^{\circ}C$, 5hr., in air. The structural properties of the specimens were investigated by XRD and SEM. The $Al_2$O$_3$ceramics with dopants had hexagonal structure and didn't show secondary phases. In the case of specimens with 0.25wt% La$_2$O$_3$and 0.25wt% Bi$_2$O$_3$bulk densities and lattice parameter of c/a were 3.818g/cm$^3$, 3.783g/cm$^3$and ca=2.725, c/a=2.723, respectively. The bulk densities of $Al_2$O$_3$ceramics were decreased with dopants.

  • Reaction kinetics for the solid-state reaction of $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ with amorphous $TiO_2$ to produce $Al_2TiO_5$ (Tialite) was studied in the temperature range of $1200~1300^{\circ}C$. Rate of kinetic reaction were determined by using $TiO_2$-coated $Al_2O_3$ compact containing 50 mol% $TiO_2$ and heating the reactant mixtures in MgO at definite temperature for various times. Amount of products and unreacted reactants were determined by X-ray diffractometry. Data from the volume fraction and ratio of peak intensities of $\beta-Al_2TiO_5$ indicated that the reaction of $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ with $TiO_2$ to form pseudobrookite starts between 1280 and $1300^{\circ}C$. The activation energy for solid-state reaction was determined by using the Arrhenius equation ; The activation energy was 622.4 kJ/mol.

  • $Al_2$$O_3$ coatings were deposited on M2 high speed steels by the plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) process, using a gas mixture of AlC1$_3$, $H_2$, $CO_2$ and Ar $Al_2$$O_3$ coatings had interference color and showed amorphous phase. $A1_2$X$A1_3$/($Ti_{0.5}$ /$Al_{0.5}$ )N double layer coatings were produced in the sequence of substrate $NH_3$ plasma pretreatment, ($Ti_{0.5}$$Al_{0.5}$)N depoition process, $Al_2$$O_3$ deposition process. $Al_2$ $O_3$/( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings showed NaCl structure in ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N layer and amorphous phase in A1$_2$ $O_3$ layer. It was shown that $Al_2$ $O_3$ columns continuously grew onto ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N columns. ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N single coating and $Al_2$ $O_3$/( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coating were oxidized at $700^{\circ}C$, 80$0^{\circ}C$, 90$0^{\circ}C$ for 1hr, 3hr in atmosphere. At 80$0^{\circ}C$, single layer coatings were oxidized, which were examined substrate oxide particle. But $Al_2$ $O_3$/ ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings maintained the asdeposited state. Therefore, $Al_2$ $O_3$/ ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N double layer coatings have moreexcellent oxidation resistance than ( $Ti_{0.5}$A $l_{0.5}$)N single layer coatings.X> 0.5/)N single layer coatings.s.

Grain Boundary Behavior and Heat Treatment Effect of AlN Ceramics Prepared from Al-isopropoxide (Al-isopropoxide로부터 AlN 소결체의 입계상 거동 및 열처리 효과)

  • Fine AlN powder was synthesized by carbothermal reduction and nitridation of alumimun hydroxide prepared from Al-isopropoxide. AlN ceramics with Y2O3 and CaO were prepared by hot-pressing under the pressure of 30 MPa at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in N2 atmosphere. Grain boundary behavior and purification mechanism of AlN lattice were examined by heat treatment of AlN ceramics at 185$0^{\circ}C$ for 1-6 h in N2 atmosphere. AlN ceramics without sintering additives showed poor sinterability. However, Y2O3-doped and CaO-doped AlN ceramics were fully densified nearly to theoretical density. As the heat treatment time increased, c-axis lattice parameter increased. This is attributed to the removal of Al2O3 in AlN lattice. This purification effect of AlN attice depended upon the quantity of secondary oxide phase in the inintial stage of heat treatment and the heat treatment time.

  • The Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ SiC and Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/C hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) were fabricated by squeeze infiltration method. Uniform distribution of reinforcements were found in the microstructure of metal matrix composites. Mechanical tests were carried out under various test conditions to clearly identify mechanical behavior of MMCs, and the wear mechanism of Al/Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$/(SiC or C) hybrid metal matrix composites were investigated. The tensile strength and hardness of hybrid composites was resulted in increasing compared with those of the unreinforced matrix alloy. Wear resistance was strongly dependent upon kinds of fiber, volume fraction and sliding speed. The wear resistance of metal matrix composites was remarkably improved by the addition of reinforcements. Especially, the wear resistance of the hybrid composites of carbon fibers was more effective than in the composites reinforced with alumina and SiC whiskers of reinforcements. This was due to the effect of carbon fiber on the solid lubrication. Wear mechanisms of hybrid composites were suggested from wear surface analyses. The major wear mechanism of hybrid composites was the abrasive wear at low to intermediate sliding speed, and the melting wear at intermediate to high sliding speed.

Effect of Calcination Temperature on Al2O3-ZrO2 Ceramic Prepared by Sol-Gel Process (졸-겔법을 이용하여 제조한 Al2O3-ZrO2 세라믹스에 미치는 하소온도의 영향)

  • Characteristics of Al2O3-ZrO2 powders prepared by sol-gel process and their sintering behavior were investigated as a function of calcination temperature. The sol-gel processed powders were calcined at 800, 900, 1000, 1100, 1200$^{\circ}C$, and analyzed by X-ray diffraction technique. Pore size and distribution of green compact of the calcined powders were measured by mercury porosimeter. It is suggested that the optimal temperature of calcination for the sintering of Al2O3-ZrO2 powder prepared by sol-gel process is 1100$^{\circ}C$. In the Al2O3-17vol.% ZrO2 sintered specimen, which was sintered at 1600$^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in air, 69vol.% tetragonal phse existed.

Mechanical properties of Al/Al2O3 and Al/B4C composites

  • Mechanical properties of $Al/Al_2O_3$ and $Al/B_4C$ composites prepared through powder metallurgy are estimated up to 50% $Al_2O_3$ and 35% $B_4C$ weight fractions using micromechanics models and experiments. The experimental Young's modulus up to 0.40 weight fraction of ceramic is found to lie closely between Ravichandran's/Hashin-Shtrikman lower/upper bounds, and close to self consistent method/Miller and Lannutti method/modified rule of mixture/fuzzy logic method single value predictions. Measured Poisson's ratio lies between rule of mixture/Ravichandran lower and upper bound/modified Ravichandran upper bounds. Experimental Charpy energy lies between Hopkin-chamis method/equivalent charpy energy/Ravichandran lower limit up to 20%, and close to the reciprocal rule of mixture for higher $Al_2O_3$ content. Rockwell hardness (RB) and Micro-hardness of $Al/Al_2O_3$ are closer to modified rule of mixture predictions.
