  • Using a vortex stretching invariant term, the two-layer k-.epsilon. model has been modified to account for the extra staining of turbulence due to the mean-flow convergence and divergence. The calculations of turbulent boundary layers in a plane of symmetry are compared for experimental cases which are an axisymmetric body at an incidence of 15.deg.. The comparisons between the calculations and experimental data show that additional modifications to the dissipation rate equation have brought the significant improvement to the prediction of plane of symmetry boundary layers in the strong mean-flow convergence and divergence.

  • A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional, incompressible and compressible Navier-Stokes equations was carried out for double circular arc compressor cascade and the results are compared with available experimental data. The incompressible code based on SIMPLE algorithm adopts pressure weighted method and hybrid scheme for the convective terms. The compressible code with preconditioning method involves a upwind-biased scheme for the convective terms and LU-SGS scheme for temporal integration. Several turbulence models are evaluated by computing the turbulent viscous flows; Baldwin-Lomax, standard $\kappa$ -$\varepsilon$, $\kappa$ -$\varepsilon$ Lam. Bremhorst, standard $\kappa$-$\omega$, $\kappa$ -$\omega$ SST model.

  • Characteristics of turbulent flow with wall transpiration is analyzed. The wall transpiration includes both of suction and injection and extends their range to 0~160 of absolute magnitude of Re$_{w}$ . Reynolds number based on inlet velocity also covers wide range of 3${\times}$$10^3$~8${\times}$$10^4$. The turbulent flow with wall transpiration induces change of wall boundary layer and rapid change of turbulent field. This, in turn, leads the change of whole flow field. For predicting this complicated flow field properly, newly modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model is utilized, which is formed by modifying dissipation rate equation. The modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model of Chien is also adopted for the comparison of model performance. Analysis shows the newly modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ model is successfully able to reflect the characteristics of turbulent flow field with wall transpiration.ion.

  • The complete, fully-elliptic Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using a two-layer model, in the $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model, for the axisymmetric body. Numerically generated boundary-fitted coordinate system and the finite analytic methods are used to solve the governing equations. Calculations are started after the middle body with given inlet conditions. The velocities and the turbulent quantities at the inlet section are specified by solving the boundary layer equations or by standard flat-plate boundary profiles. The effects of the inlet conditions on the solution are investigated.

  • This study presents a numerical model to simulate density currents developing two dimensionally. The ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used for the turbulence closure. Elliptic flow equations are solved by the finite volume method. In order to investigate the applicability of the numerical model, discontinuous density currents are simulated numerically. The vortices due to the instability at the interface are simulated, showing a good agreement with the experimental visualizations in the literature. It is also investigated that the transition from slumping phase to inertial phase occurs when a bore generated at the end wall overtakes the front. However, the propagation of the density current is retarded compared with the experimental results. Two-dimensional modeling seems to have an effect on underestimating the front velocity of the density current.

  • To analyze the flow through open-channel constrictions using $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence mode, a numerical model is developed. The simulated results agree well with existing experimental data which attributes to the adequate input of turbulent eddy-viscosity by turbulence model. A stream function and velocity distributions enable the analysis of flow characteristics at the downstream of constriction. Turbulent eddy viscosities over channel are spatially varied with stream pattern. For the evaluation of rapidly varied flow, the eddy-viscosity input by turbulence model is required instead of the empirical effective viscosity to solve a shallow water equation.

  • A numerical analysis based on the three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation has been conducted to investigate the flow within a NASA rotor 67 transonic fan. General coordinate transformations are used to represent the complex blade geometry and an H-type grid is used. The governing equations are solved using implicit LU-SGS scheme for the time-marching integration and a standard ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ model is used with wall functions for the turbulence modeling. The computations are compared with the experimental data and a detailed study of the flow structures near peak efficiency and near stall is presented. The calculated overall aerodynamic efficiency and three-dimensional shock system agree well with the laser anemometer data.

  • A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc compressor cascades and the results are compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE algorithm adopt pressure weighted interpolation method for non-staggered grid and hybrid scheme for the convective terms. Turbulence modeling is very important for prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. Considering computation times, $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function is used.

  • Computational work using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations is carried out to predict the discharge coefficient of mass flow through a micro-critical nozzle. Several kinds of turbulence models and wall functions are employed to validate the computational predictions. The computed results are compared with the previous experimented ones. The present computations predict the experimental discharge coefficients with a reasonable accuracy. It is found that the standard $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$turbulence model with the standard wall function gives a best prediction of the discharge coefficients. The displacement thickness of the nozzle wall boundary layer is evaluated at the nozzle throat and is well compared to a prediction obtained by an empirical equation. The resulting displacement thickness of the wall boundary layer is about 2% to 0.6% of the diameter of the nozzle throat for the Reynolds numbers of 2000 to 20000.
