  • Biosynthesis pathway of medium-chain-length (MCL) polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) from fatty acid ${\beta}$-oxidation pathway was constructed in recombinant Escherichia coli by introducing the Pseudomonas sp. 61-3 PHA synthase gene (phaC2) and the maoC genes from Pseudomonas putida, Sinorhizobium meliloti, and Ralstonia eutropha. The metabolic link between fatty acid ${\beta}$-oxidation pathway and PHA biosynthesis pathway was constructed by MaoC, which is homologous to P. aeruginosa (R)-specific enoyl-CoA hydratase (PhaJ1). When the E. coli W3110 strains expressing the phaC2 gene and one of the maoC genes from P. putida, Sinorhizobium meliloti, and Ralstonia eutropha were cultured in LB medium containing 2 g/L of sodium decanoate as a carbon source, MCL-PHA that mainly consists of 3-hydroxyhexanoate (3HHx), 3-hydroxyoctanoate (3HO) and 3-hydroxydecanoate (3HD), was produced. The monomer composition of PHA and PHA contents varied depending on MaoC employed for the production of PHA. The highest PHA content of 18.7 wt% was achieved in recombinant E. coli W3110 expressing the phaC2 gene and the P. putida maoC gene. These results suggest that MCL-PHA biosynthesis pathway can be constructed in recombinant E. coli strains from the b-oxidation pathway by employing MaoC able to supply (R)-3-hydroxyacyl-CoA, the substrate of PHA synthase.

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze converged factors affecting compassion competence in clinical nurses. This is a descriptive correlation research to examine converged factors affecting compassion competence of clinical nurses. Research objects are 233 nurses working in three general hospitals located in Chungnam province, and who understand the purposes of this research and agree to participate in this research. To analyze the data, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used. The variable which has the greatest effect on compassion competence was compassion satisfaction, followed by clinical experience, compassion fatigue, with those 3 variables explaining 34.4% of compassion competence. Therefore it is necessary to develop specific education programs to improve compassion competence of nurses. Since the explaining power of three variables to compassion competence is 34.4%, it is necessary to add more meaningful variables to explain compassion competence of clinical nurses.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate factors affecting Korean Baby Boomers' life satisfaction. Using data from Demographic Profiles and Welfare Needs of Middle Aged Persons(2010), this study focuses on whether there is a gender difference in predictors of life satisfaction. Analysis results show that there is a significant variability in predictors of life satisfaction by gender. Couple satisfaction, self-rated health status, and expectations for the standard of living after 10 years were significant for both male and female models. It was noticeable to report that internet use level and monthly household income were unique predictors for male model; spouse parent care burden and parent-child satisfaction were unique predictors for female model. These findings suggest that it is vital for policy planners to take gender differences into account when designing and formulating public policies for Korean Baby Boomer.
