Gallium nitride (GaN) powders were prepared by calcining a gallium(III) nitrate salt in flowing ammonia in the temperature ranging from 500 to 1050 $^{\circ}C$. The process of conversion of the salt to GaN was monitored by X-ray diffraction and $^{71}Ga$ MAS (magic-angle spinning) NMR spectroscopy. The salt decomposed to ${\gamma}-Ga_2O_3$ and then converted to GaN without ${\gamma}-{\beta}Ga_2O_3$ phase transition. It is most likely that the conversion of ${\gamma}-Ga_2O_3$ to GaN does not proceed through $Ga_2O$ but stepwise via amorphous gallium oxynitride ($GaO_xN_y$) as intermediates. The GaN nanowires and microcrystals were obtained by calcining the pellet containing a mixture of ${\gamma}-Ga_2O_3$ and carbon in flowing ammonia at 900 $^{\circ}C$ for 15 h. The growth of the nanowire might be explained by the vapor-solid (VS) mechanism in a confined reactor. Room-temperature photoluminescence spectra of as-synthesized GaN powders obtained showed the emission peak at 363 nm.
An isolate of Streptomyces rochei synonym was found to produce antibiotics with narrow anti-microbial spectrum against Streptococcus and Xanthomonas sp. Among the antibiotic complex produced by the strain, the main active compound was isolated, and its physico-chemical properties and biological activities were investigated. Molecular weight of the compound was determined to be ${[M+H]}^+$ 797 (FAB-MS). UV, $^1H \;and\;^{13}C$ NMR, and IR spectra suggested that the compound is a kirromycin-like aurodox group antibiotic. However, the anti-microbial spectrum of the main compound was slightly different from that of kirromycin. In addition, it was newly found that kirromycin showed a selective anti-microbial activity against Streptococcus pyogenes and phytopathogenic Xanthomonas sp.

Fluorenylidene chalcone derivatives were synthesized by condensation. The structure of these compounds were ascertained by means of UV, melting point, IR and $^1H-NMR$ spectra. The nucleophilic addition reaction kinetics of Thioglycolic acid to fluorenylidene chalcone was investigate by UV in 20% $dioxane-H_2O$ at $25^{\circ}C$. The rate equation which were applied over a wide $pH1.0{\sim}13.0$ range. On the basis of general base catalysis and confirmation of addition reaction product, the nucleophilic addtion reaction kinetics of thioglycolic acid to fluorenylidene chalcone were measured by the pH change. From the result of the above caption, a plausible nucleophilic addition reaction mechanism of thioglycolic acid to fluorenylidene chalcone was proposed. These compounds may be used as the starting materials for the preparation of the engineering plastics or the germicide.
The mite-control activities of materials obtained from Pelargonium graveolens oil against Dermatophagoides farinae and D. pteronyssinus were examined using an impregnated fabric disk bioassay and were compared with those shown by commercial benzyl benzoate and N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET). Purification of the biologically active constituents from P. graveolens oil was done by silica gel chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. The structures of the active components were analyzed by EI/MS, $^{1}H$-NMR, $^{13}C$-NMR, $^{1}H-^{13}C$ COSY-NMR, and DEPT-NMR spectra, and were identified as geraniol ($C_{10}H_{18}O$, MW 154.25, trans-3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-l-ol) and $\beta$-citronellol ($C_{10}H_{20}O$, MW 156.27, 3,7-dimethyl-6-octen-l-o1). Based on the $LD_{50}$ values, the most toxic compound was geraniol (0.26${\mu}g/cm^{2}$), followed by $\beta$-citronellol (0.28${\mu}g/cm^{2}$), benzyl benzoate (10.03${\mu}g/cm^{2}$), and DEET (37.12${\mu}g/cm^{2}$) against D. farillae. In the case of D. pteronyssinus, geraniol (0.28${\mu}g/cm^{2}$) was the most toxic, followed by $\beta$-citronellol (0.29${\mu}g/cm^{2}$), benzyl benzoate (9.58${\mu}g/cm^{2}$), and DEET (18.23${\mu}g/cm^{2}$). These results suggest that D. farinae and D. pteronyssinus may be controlled more effectively by the application of geraniol and $\beta$-citronellol than benzyl benzoate and DEET. Furthermore, geraniol and $\beta$-citronellol isolated from P. graveolens could be useful for managing populations of D. farinae and D. pterollyssinus.
In this study, we modified silica nanoparticles with bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine (BTPED) silane coupling agent, which has two secondary amino groups in a molecule, to introduce amino groups on the silica surface. After modification of silica, we used acrylate group containing 3-(acryloyloxy)-2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (AHM) to introduce polymerizable methacrylate groups by Michael addition reaction. We used Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis (EA) and liquid and solid state cross polarization magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) to understand the reactions between N-H groups of BTPED modified silica surface and acrylate groups of AHM monomer. We confirmed Michael addition reaction between BTPED modified silica and AHM completed in 2 hr reaction time. We also found increased methacrylate group introduction with increase of mol ratio of the acrylate group of AHM to N-H group of BTPED modified silica by increase of C=O peak area of measured FTIR spectra. These results were also supported by EA and solid state $^{13}C$ and $^{29}Si$ NMR results.
Bioassay-guided isolation of the dried roots of Aralia continentalis led to the isolation of (-)-pimara-8(14), 15dien-19-oic acid (continentalic acid) and $(24E)-Stigmasta-5,22-dien-3{\beta}-ol$ (stagmasterol). Their structures were elucidated using $^1H-NMR$, $^{13}C-NMR$, UV and mass spectra analyses. The gram-positive bacterial, including methicilline-resistant (MRSA), were more sensitive to the continentalic acid and stagmasterol than gram-negative bacterial.
Three conformational isomers of calix[4]arene butanoate were isolated from the reaction of calix[4]arene and butanoyl chloride in the presence of NaH and their structures were determined by NMR spectra as 1,2-alternate 2a, partial cone 2b and 1,3-alternate conformer 2c, respectively. The crystal structure of 2a has been determined by X-ray diffraction method. The crystals are monoclinic, space group C2/c, a=18.435 (4), b=13.774 (2), c=16.941 (3) Å, β=116.23 (1)°, Z=4, V=3858.8 (12)Å3, Dc=1.21 g cm-3, Dm=1.21 g cm-3. The molecule is in the 1,2-alternate conformation. It has two-fold symmetry axis along the line connecting between C (7AA') and C (7BB') parallel to the b axis of crystal lattice.
