Bentonite based ceramic materials from a perspective of gamma-ray shielding: Preparation, characterization and performance evaluation

  • Exposure to gamma-rays is hazardous for humans and other living beings because of their high penetration through the materials. For this reason, shielding materials (usually lead, copper and stainless steel) are used to protect against gamma rays. This study's objective was to prepare ceramic materials for gamma radiation shielding by using different natural bentonite clays. Gamma-ray attenuation performances of the prepared shielding materials at different thicknesses were investigated and evaluated for different gamma-ray energies from different standard point gamma radiation sources (251Am, 57Co, 137Cs, 60Co, and 88Y). The mass and linear attenuation coefficients of the prepared ceramics vary between 0.238 and 0.443 cm2 g-1 and between 0.479 and 1.06 cm-1, respectively, depending on their thicknesses. Results showed that these materials could be prioritized because of their evidential properties of gamma radiation protection in radiation applications.

  • The effects of $^{60}Co\;{\gamma}-Ray$ irradiation on TSC characteristics of TFE type polytetrafluoroethylene(PTFE) were investigated. The $\alpha$ peak on TSC curve of PTFE was decreased, while the $\beta$ peak was reversely increased by the increasing of $\gamma$-irradiation doses up to 80 krad(0.8 kGy). Moreover, $\alpha$ and $\beta$ peaks on TSC curve of the irradiated PTFE are changed with the increasing of the forming temperature and forming electric field. In annealing the irradiated PTFE specimens at room temperature in air, it was shown a continuous recovery of TSC characteristics with time, which is assumed the traped charge carriers are liberated from the shallow traps and undergoes a recombination process during room temperature decay.

  • In order to investigate the radiation effects induced to electrical properties of Biaxially-Oriented Polypropylen film, several observations were carried out to the sample irradiated to various dose by $Co^{60}-{\gamma}$ ray, on the characteristics of TSC spectra measuered as a function of electric field applied to a sample of 15[ ${\mu}m$] thick. The TSC spectra observed in the temperature range of $153{\sim}403[K]$ with the electric field of intensity $10{\sim}60$ [MV/m], have shown two of the distinguished peak such as ${\beta}$, ${\alpha}$, each of which appeared at $-5{\sim}20$ [ $^{\circ}C$] and 90 [ $^{\circ}C$] respectively. As the conclusions, obtained from the studies, the origin of ${\alpha}$ peak in TSC seems to be attributed by thermal excitation of ions trapped with $0.4{\sim}0.8[eV]$ deep, at the defects formed by $Co^{60}-{\gamma}$ irradiation in a crystaline region. The origin of ${\beta}$ peak was regarded as the depolarization process of "OH" or "CO" dipole with the activation energy of $0.4{\sim}0.6[eV]$ in an amorphous region.

  • The electric characteristics of all the instruments and materials used in atomic field is changed due to radiation damages by the effects of radio activities. In this study, when the condenser is radiated by Gamma-ray, variations in its electric properties have been investigated. The following results are obtained. (1) The capacitance in O.F paper condenser is exponentially increased as the quantity of irradiation by Gamma-ray is increased, but polyethylene, ceramic, chemical, neostyrene, mylar condenser are decreased. and in case of more than 10$^{7}$ of irradiation it has saturated state, (2) The breakdown voltage and the .delta. in condensers except the O.F paper condenser are exponentially increased as the quantity of irradiation by Gamma-ray is increased but in case of more than 10$^{7}$ .gamma. of irradiation it has decreased.

  • Proposals were mode on how to differentiate radiation effects in morphological phases of polyethylene and discussions were developed with the results obtained on a low density polyethylene, SOCAREX, specified by number average molecular weight; overbar Mn=5,400, density; 0.92, and degree of branch; 3.4/100 carbon atom, which was irradiated to Co$^{60}$ .gamma. ray at the dose rate of 0.5 Mrad/hr in ambient temperature under the pressure of 10$^{-5}$ Torr. or 1 atm. respectively. The effect to crystalline phase in possibly deduced from dose dependent variation of relative area between (110) and (200) peaks on X ray diffraction spectrum and that, the effects to amorphous phase can be understood through dose dependent relaxation behaviours of .betha. peak on internal friction characteristics of the specimen. The results obtained thus far indicate that, in crystalline phase, relative crystallinity shows a rather rapid decrease up to 20 Mrad with increasing dose, however, little change of crystallinity can be observed in the region between 20-200 Mrad, and degradation appears to be more predominant than crosslinking up to 60 Mrad. While in amorphous phase the indication also shows that degradation is only predominant up to 20 Mrad. Furthermore several correlations can be seen with amenable explanation between dose dependent behaviours observed in both phases.

  • The characteristics of all the instruments and materials used in atomic industry is changed due to radiation damages by the effects of radiation activities. In this study, when the Carbon Resistor, main element of electrical circuits, is irradiated by Gamma-Ray, variations in its electrical properties have been investigated. The following results are obtained: 1) The resistance value in Carbon Resistor is exponentially increased as the quantity of irradiation by Gamma-Ray is increased, but in case of more than 10$^{6}$ R/hr. of quantity of irradiation it has saturated-state value. 2) The rate of change inrestistance value has been independent on the intensity of Gamma-Ray source when Carbon Resistor is irradiated in the same quantity of irradiation. 3) The resistance value in irradiated Carbon Resistor has not been varied with elapse of time. 4) The more the distance from the Carbon Resistor to the Gamma-Ray source the more greatly the resistance value is decreased and that it has been shown that the more quantity of irradiation by Gamma-Ray, the greater the rate of decrease in resistance value. Through the above results it has been concluded that the measurement values obtained by the high-precision instruments in the radiation field have to be corrected with proper consideration to radiation damages.

저선량 60Co감마선 조사 후 생산된 둥근전복(Haliotis discus discus)치패의 초기성장 변화에 관한 연구 (Early Growth Changes in Juvenile Abalone Haliotis discus discus Produced by Irradiation with Low-dose 60Co Gamma Rays)

  • We observed that the growth and physiological change in Haliotis discus discus by low-dose irradiation with gamma ray.Irradiation with gamma ray was undertaken by using the low-level irradiation facility ($^{60}CO$) in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Science and Technology at Jeju National University. The parent abalones were attached one by one and then fixed by using the rubber band to the front side of the fabricated case for irradiation with gamma ray. The experimental plots of irradiation with gamma ray were set as 10, 15, 20 and 25 Gy and the 25 female abalones and 10 male abalones were utilized for each experimental plot. The sperms and eggs were fertilized by setting an interval for each dose to prevent mixing with other experimental plots when fertilizing the sperms and eggs for each dose of irradiation with gamma ray. As for the fertility, it was confirmed to be 85% the control and 10 Gy groups, whereas it was found to be 80%, 65% and 50% in the 15 Gy, 20 Gy and 25 Gy groups, respectively. As a conclusion, the hatching rate and attachment rate were higher at 10 and 15 Gy than the other experimental plots, and the growth rate was higher at 20 Gy than the other experimental plots. Also the changes in lysozyme activity in accordance with the stress of water temperature were found to have a significant increase in the other experimental plots as compared with the control plot at the end of 0 h. The changes in lysozyme activity have remained constant in all the experimental plots at the end of 12 h. These results allowed us to confirm that lysozyme was undertaking the biodefense action by reacting sensitively to the stress of water temperature in the control experimental plot. As for the other experimental plots, they are believed to avoid the biodefense mechanism due to the high degree of anti-parasite mechanism and anti-viral mechanism. Thus, it is believed that it would be imperative to conduct development and research on breeds that were potent for environmental tolerance by applying the method of irradiation with gamma ray to other marine animals and plants.

Calculation of Effective Angular Correlation in the HPGe Spectroscopy of Co-60 $\gamma$-rays

  • The angular correlation effect was investigated for Co-60 ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy by using HPGe detector and the effective angular correlation was theoretically calculated by considering the finite detector solid angle. For the calculation of effective angular correlation, the detection efficiency as a function of ${\gamma}$-ray incident direction was obtained by using Monte Carlo method and the first interaction model. The results and the methods used in the calculation are discussed.

60Co γ 를 조사한 인삼모상근 돌연변이 세포주의 생장과 Ginsenoside의 생산 (Production of Ginsenoside in the Hairy Roots Irradiated by 60Co γ on Panax ginseng C.A Meyer)

  • 본 연구는 인삼(Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer)의 모상근에 $^{60}$Co ${\gamma}$-ray의 조사에 따른 영향을 구명하고자 수행되었다. 0.5~4 Krad의 다양한 방사선을 조사한 결과 모상근은 3Krad이상에서 생장이 억제되었다. 2 Krad이하의 방사선을 조사한 모상근의 정단을 제거한후 자라난 측근을 하나의 세포주로 하여 생장과 형태가 다양한 206개의 모상근 세포주를 선발하고 1/2 MS 호르몬 무첨가 배지에서 배양하였다. 206개의 세포주 중 생장이 우수한 10개의 세포주를 선발하였는데 특히 대조구에 비해 ${\gamma}$-GHR 70과 ${\gamma}$-GHR 94의 생장이 각각 34.5%, 44.7% 으로 가장 높음을 확인하였다. 생장이 우수한 10개 세포주의 형태적 특징을 주근의 굵기와 측근의 돌기형성, 측근의 생장정도에 따라 관찰하였던 바, 생장이 우수한 세포주는 1차근이 가늘며 왕성한 생장을 나타남을 확인하였다. Ginsenoside의 함량에 있어서 생장이 우수한 10개의 세포주 중 8개의 모상근 세포주가 대조구보다 함량이 높았으며 특히 ${\gamma}$-GHR 59와 ${\gamma}$-GHR 94는 각각 19%와 16.9%로 가장 높은 함량을 나타내었다. 따라서 ${\gamma}$-ray를 조사한 모상근 세포주 중 총 ginsenoside 함량이 우수하고 생장 또한 우수한 세포주로 ${\gamma}$-GHR 70, ${\gamma}$-GHR 94를 선발하였다. 특정 ginsenoside의 함량별로 보면 항암에 효과적인 Rb$_2$${\gamma}$-GHR 57가 7.6%, Rc는 ${\gamma}$-GHR 69가 16.2%의 함량 증가를 나타내어 특정 ginsenoside 생산에 효율적일 것으로 보인다. 돌연변이와 관련된 유전자(VNTRP)분석은 현재 진행 중에 있다.

유암수술후 방사선치료시 $^{60}Co\;\gamma$선과 전자선 조사야 접합부 선량분포에 관한 연구 (A Study on Dobe Distribution at the Junction of $^{60}CO\;\gamma-Ray$ and Elecron Beam in Postoperative Radiotherapy of Breast Cancer)

  • Postoperative radiotherapy of breast cancer makes it possible to reduce loco-regional recurrence of breast cancer. The treatment technique, which can reduce the low-dose region at the junction and lung, is required. To produce proper dose distribution of internal mammary chain and chest wall, authors tried to find the method to expose $^{60}Co\;\gamma-ray$ on internal mammary region and 7MeV electron on chest wall. Exposure time of $^{60}Co\;\gamma$ and monitor unit of 9MeV were selected so that dose of $^{60}Co$ at 4cm depth was the same as that of 7Mev electron at $80\%$ dose depth. The position and direction of electron beam were changed for $^{60}Co$ beam: $0^{\circ},\;5^{\circ}$ for 0cm seperation; $0^{\circ},\;5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ}$ for 0.5cm seperation; $5^{\circ},\;10^{\circ},\;15^{\circ}$ for 1cm seperation. The results are as followings. 1. When the seperation of two fields was increased, dose on the axis of $^{60}Co$ beam was increased and dose at the junction region decreased while the volume of lung to be exposed to high dose and hot spot size were irregularly changed. 2. The dose distribution in the target volume of internal mammary and chest wall was most ideal when the seperation of two fields was $0\~0.5cm$ and the direction of electron beam was parallel to $^{60}Co$ beam.
