This study investigated the effects of layered clay on the thermal curing behavior and tensile properties of resole phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resin/clay/cellulose nanocomposites. The thermal curing behavior of the nanocomposite was characterized using conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and temperature modulated (TMDSC). The addition of clay was found to accelerate resin curing, as measured by peak temperature ($T_p$) and heat of reaction (${\Delta}H$) of the nanocomposite’ curing reaction increasing clay addition decreased $T_p$ with a minimum at 3~5% clay. However, the reversing heat flow and heat capacity showed that the clay addition up to 3% delayed the vitrification process of the resole PF resin in the nanocomposite, indicating an inhibition effect of the clay on curing in the later stages of the reaction. Three different methods were employed to determineactivation energies for the curing reaction of the nanocomposite. Both the Ozawa and Kissinger methods showed the lowest activation energy (E) at 3% clay content. Using the isoconversional method, the activation energy ($E_{\alpha}$) as a function of the degree of conversion was measured and showed that as the degree of cure increased, the $E_{\alpha}$ showed a gradual decrease, and gave the lowest value at 3% nanoclay. The addition of clay improved the tensile strengths of the nanocomposites, although a slight decrease in the elongation at break was observed as the clay content increased. These results demonstrated that the addition of clay to resole PF resins accelerate the curing behavior of the nanocomposites with an optimum level of 3% clay based on the balance between the cure kinetics and tensile properties.
A new compound, kalopanaxin F (3), and 11 known compounds (1, 2, 4-12), were isolated from the stem bark of Kalopanax pictus. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic methods. Five of the compounds (2, 3, 5, 6, and 12) significantly inhibited $TNF{\alpha}$-induced NF-${\kappa}B$ transcriptional activity in HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner, with $IC_{50}$ values ranging from 6.2 to 9.1 ${\mu}M$. Furthermore, the transcriptional inhibitory function of these compounds was confirmed based on decreases in COX-2 and iNOS gene expression in HepG2 cells. Compounds 3-7, 9, and 12 significantly activated the transcriptional activity of PPARs dose-dependently, with $EC_{50}$ values ranging from 4.1-$12.7{\mu}M$. Compounds 4 and 5 exhibited $PPAR{\alpha}$, $PPAR{\gamma}$, and $PPAR{\beta}({\delta})$ transactivational activities in a dose-dependent manner, with $EC_{50}$ values of 16.0 and 17.0, 8.7 and 16.5, 26.2 and 26.3 ${\mu}M$, respectively.
Objective : The aim of this study was to examine the effects of electroacupuncture(EA) at the PC6 (Naegwan) on nomal humans using power spectrum analysis. Methods : Electroencephalogram(EEG) is a multi-scaled signal consisting of several components of time series with different dominant frequency ranges and different origins. EEG power spectrum exibit site-specific and state-related differences in specific frequency bands. In this study, power spectrum was used as a measure of complexity. 30 channel EEG study was carried out in 8 subjects (8 males; age=$21.4{\pm}0.5$ years). Results : We found that the power values of the alpha wave at F7 channel (P<0.05) were highered than during the acupuncture treatment, and the power values of the delta wave at TCP1, CP1, TCP2, T5 channels(P<0.05) were lowered than during the acupuncture treatment. However, the comparison with that before and after the treatment shows no significant differences in all channels.
In this study, we investigated the variation of microstructural and electromagnetic properties of YIG ferrites for Isolator/Circulator application with the sintering temperature and Zr addition. The composition of the ferrites was Y$_{2.1}$Ca$_{0.9}$Fe$_{4.4-x}$V$_{0.5}$In$_{0.05}$Al$_{0.05}$Zr$_{x}$O$_{12}$ with x=0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2. The YIG ferrites were prepared by the conventional ceramic sintering process. The Zr-substituted YIG ferrite, Y$_{2.1}$ Ca$_{0.9}$Fe$_{4.4-x}$V$_{0.5}$In$_{0.05}$Al$_{0.05}$ Zr$_{x}$O$_{12}$ showed the highest saturation magnetization (1097 gauss) at x=0.1. The microwave properties were shown as isolation of 18.60 dB and insertion loss of 0.45 dB at x=0.2. Additionally, Zr-substitution was effective in decreasing ferromagnetic resonance linewidth with Zr content.
The equilibrium structures for the ground and transition states of $C_7H_7^+$ isomers have been investigated using sophisticated ab initio quantum mechanical techniques with various basis sets. The structures of tropyrium and benzyl cations have been fully optimized at the DZP CCSD(T) levels of theory. And the structures of o-, m-and p-tolyl cations are optimized fully up to the DZ CCSD(T) levels of theory. The geometries for the transition states between three isomers of tolyl cations have been optimized up to DZP CISD level of theory. The SCF harmonic vibrational frequencies for tropylium, benzyl, and three isomers of tolyl cations are all real numbers, which confirm the potential minima and each unique imaginary vibrational frequencies for TS1 and TS2 confirm the true transition states. The relative energy of the benzyl cation with respect to the tropyrium cation is predicted to be 28.5 kJ/mol and is in good agreement with the previous theoretical predictions. The 0 K heats of formation, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}_{f0}$, have been predicted to be 890, 1095, 1101, and 1110 kJ/mol for tropylium, ortho-, meta-, and para-tolyl cations by taking the experimental value of 919 kJ/mol for the benzyl cation as the base level. The relative stability between tolyl cations is in the order of ortho

We present a study on the development of a practical and quantitative technique for the assessment of the structural health condition with using piezoceramic(PZT) sensors. The electro-impedance-based technique with the PZT patches is very sensitive for evaluation of the incipient and small damage in a high frequency range, and however the commonly traditional modal analysis method is effective only for considerably larger damages in low frequency range. The paper presents the technique in detecting and characterizing real-time damage on the specimen that is an aluminum plate fastened with bolts and nuts by different torques and as well a plate with a crack. By using the special arrangement of the PZT sensors, the required longitudinal wave is generated through the specimen. A large number of experiments are conducted and the different conditions of the specimens, i.e. the location and extent of loosening bolts, and the plate with a crack are simulated. respectively. Since fixing and loosening the loosened bolt is controlled by a torque wrench, we can control exactly the experiment of the different torques. Compared with the simulated healthy condition, we can find whether or not there is a damage in the specimen with using an impedance analyzer with the PZT sensors. Several indices are discussed and used for assessing the different simulated damages. As for the location of bolt loosening, the RMSD is found to be the most appropriate index for numerical assessment and as well the RMSD shows strongly linear relationship for assessing the extent of the bolt loosening, and the frequency peak shift ${\Delta}F$ is used to assess the cracked plate. The possibility of repeatability of the pristine condition signatures is also presented and the appropriate frequency range and interval are uniquely selected through large numbers of experiments.
The quality of a phage-displayed antibody library deteriorates with clonal variations, which are caused by differentially expressed Escherichia coli antibody genes. Using the human Fab SP114 against the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex-E2 (PDCE2), we created four E. coli TOP10F' clones with a pCMTG phagemid encoding Fab-pIII (pCMTG-Fab), Fd ($V_H+C_{H1}$)-pIII (pCMTG-Fd), or light chain (L) (pCMTG-L), or the vector only (pCMTG-${\Delta}Fab$) to investigate the effect of clonal variations in a defined manner. Compared to the others, the E. coli clone with pCMTG-Fab was growth retarded in liquid culture, but efficiently produced phage progenies by Ex12 helper phage superinfection. Our results suggest that an antibody library must be cultured for a short duration before helper phage superinfection, and that the Ex12 helper phage helped to alleviate the detrimental effect of clonal variation, at least in part, by preferentially increasing functional phage antibodies during phage amplification.

In this study, we have investigated the effects of Mn dopant on the bulk trap levels and grain boundary characteristics of $Bi_2O_3$-based ZnO (ZB) varistor using admittance spectroscopy and dielectric functions (such as $Z^*,\;Y^*,\;M^*,\;\varepsilon^*$, and $tan\delta$). Admittance spectra and dielectric functions show two bulk traps of $Zn_i^{..}$ (0.20 eV) and $V^{\bullet}_o$ (0.29~0.33 eV) in ZnO-$Bi_2O_3-Mn_3O_4$ (ZBM). The barrier of grain boundaries in ZBM could be electrochemically single type. However, its thermal stability was slightly disturbed by ambient oxygen because the apparent activation energy of grain boundaries was changed from 0.79 eV at lower temperature to 1.08 eV at higher temperature. The grain boundary capacitance $C_{gb}$ was decreased slightly with temperature as 1.3~1.8 nF but resistance $R_{gb}$ decreased exponentially. The relaxation time distribution can result from the heterogeneity of the barriers constituting the varistor. It is revealed that Mn dopant in ZB reduced the heterogeneity of the barrier in grain boundaries and stabilized the barrier against the ambient temperature.
Gas flux across the air-sea interface is often determined by the product of gas transfer velocity k) and the difference of concentrations in water and air. k is primarily controlled by wind stress on the air-sea interface, thus all parameterizations ofk involve wind speed, a rough indicator of wind stress, as one of the independent variables. We attempted to explore the spatial and temporal variations of k in the East (Japan) Sea using a database from Naet al. (1992). Three different parameterizations were employed: those of Liss and Merlivat (1986), Wanninkhof(1992), and Wanninkhofand McGillis (1999). The strong non-linear dependence of k on wind speed in all parameterizations leads us to examine the effect of time resolution, in which the binned wind speeds are averaged, on the estimation ofk. Two time resolutions of 12 hours (short-term) and one month (long-term) were chosen. The mean wind speeds were fed into the given parameterizations, resulting in six different transfer velocities of $CO_2$ ranging from 12 to 32 cm/h. In addition to the threefold difference depending on the choice of parameterization, the long-term average of wind speed results in a value ofk up to 20% higher than the short-term (12 hours) average of wind speed due to the non-Rayleigh wind distribution in the East (Japan) Sea. While it is not known which parameterization is more reliable, this study proposes that the time-averaged wind speed should not be used in areas where non-Ralyleigh wind distribution prevails such as the East (Japan) Sea. The net annual $CO_2$ flux was estimated using the value of k described above and the monthly ${\Delta}fCO_2$ of Oh et al. (1999); this ranges from 0.034 to 0.11 Gt-C/yr.
Electro-Discharge Sintering (EDS) employs a high-voltage/high-current-density pulse of electrical energy, discharged from a capacitor bank, to instantaneously consolidate powders. In the present study, a single pulse of 0.57-1.1 kJ/0.45 g-atomized spherical $Ti_{52}Zr_{28}Ni_{20}$ powders in size range of 10~30 and $30\sim50{\mu}m$ consisting of ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) and icosahedral phases were applied to examine the structural evolution of icosahedral phase during EDS. Structural investigation reveals that high electrical input energy facilitates complete decomposition of icosahedral phase into C14 laves and ${\beta}$-(Ti, Zr) phases. Moreover, critical input energy inducing decomposition of the icosahedral phase during EDS depends on the size of the powder. Porous Ti and W compacts have been fabricated by EDS using rectangular and spherical powders upon various input energy at a constant capacitance of $450{\mu}F$ in order to verify influence of powder shape on microstructure of porous compacts. Besides, generated heat (${\Delta}H$) during EDS, which is measured by an oscilloscope, is closely correlated with powder size.
